Title: Couple of Skins Added
Post by: Ploppy on August 25, 2004, 08:43:20 PM
You may have noticed that there is a drop-down box at the bottom left of the screen. This is where you can choose your 'skin' for the forum, i.e how it looks.

If you feel like a change of scene please have a play. I actually quite like them both but still prefer the default (which will always remain the default).

The forum I hope you will all agree works very well at the moment and is very functional and easy to use and hence any changes we make will always be reversible and non-drastic.

Any comments/suggestions etc as welcome as ever.

Thanks,

Paul

You don't hang around do you Paul?
Always good to have a choice - and still not sure if I like Tokyo or default best!

Thanks John R, much appreciated.

Quick Update: The new Statistics Link has now been added to both of the new skins. This evening I will work on removing the graphic at the top left on the dark blue one.

Any ideas on different colours you would like to see? There are quite a few out there and I could always make one myself given a bit of time.

Thanks,

Paul

Ploppy, could you put a link at the bottom of every page to go to the forum home?

Do you mean at the bottom of every page? Whether it be Board/Forum/Topic/Statistic/Member/etc view? Presumably all.

Without creating a new global section the quickest solution would be to put a link in the only true global section that appears everywhere, which is the skin chooser/lo fi version/stats frame at the bottom. I'll see what I can do...

Does anyone actually use the lo-fi version? I've tried it on my PDA and it works quite well.

Cheers,
Paul

Ploppy - you're certainly putting a lot of work into the site - Thanks.
Don't work too hard though - the site is already one of the best of its type I've seen.
Skins - Personally I like the default skin. Sky blue reminds me of the clear skies we can expect in Plakias.
Stats - excellent.
Lo-Fi version - looked at it but Hi-fi is fast enough, even with a slow dial-up connection.

No problem, get me tinkering with computers and I'm as happy as a pig in.....

John (compage).. and everyone else

There is now a link at the bottom of the page, next to the 'Lo-Fi..' link that will take you back to the Forum home. Is that what you were after?

Cheers,
Paul

Ploppy, I've just noticed something about the new link to Forum Home.

If I read a new post and then use the link to go to Forum Home, the indicators on the sub-topics that show whether there are unread posts have not been updated.

Is that behaviour to be expected?

It should behave the same as any other method of returning to the front page i.e via the nav bar near the top of the page, via a favourite or via typing into the address bar. I will tweak the Forum Home link so that it is exactly the same as the nav bar.

Can you try out different methods on your next visit (hard one to test without deleting IE cache files which I don't want to do).

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul

I have tried out all the skins and on balance, I think I prefer the original 'blue skies' one.  Thanks for doing a great job for the site.  Most of it is over my head, though!  See y'all soon!

Thanks Yvonne,

The other skins are growing on me, currently Tokyo Blue is the one in current use.

Some other things to look ahead for:

Spell Checker - Ability to spell check before adding post/reply.

Members Online Today - An enhanced view showing the members who were online today and some statistics.

Portal - A different way of viewing the board. There already is a portal built-in. With enhancements it could be quite nice. If you want to see the current portal [a href=\"http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?PHPSESSID=349579e76b6e8161c91694bee6a5b809&act=home]click here.

I'll be chatting to John about these in Plakias and will get cracking upon our return.

Cheers,
Paul

Do enjoy it - will be there soon ourselves.

I think the Portal view is great   - any reason why haven't we had this option before? (no criticism, just wondering). What exactly does the right hand pane display - initial posts for recent topics clearly. but is it the last 10 topics to have been started or the last 10 topics based on lastes replies (if the former then a new reply to an old topic wouldn't be picked up).

Hi Paul,

I've just tested the new 'Forum home' link at the bottom against the 'Plakias Forums' link at the top and both work the same way.

Thanks Paul, the Portal view is great.  I am a sucker for statistics, too, so I am really getting a great deal out of the forums at the moment.

Hi Graham,

We did have the portal before, John mentioned it [a href=\"http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?PHPSESSID=349579e76b6e8161c91694bee6a5b809&showtopic=195&hl=]here. I think the link to it at the top of the page disappeared when we upgraded to version 2 of the board software. I will put the link back.

There are a couple of modified portal views being worked on by some talented people out there. They are looking very good. I will look at implementing one after the holiday as it will take quite a bit of work (no easy one click install in this game   )

I think that it is the last 10 topics that were started, I agree this is not ideal, hopefully we can change this in the future.

Cheers,
Paul
