That was superb - can't think where it was

I was impressed the way the message came up immediately without waiting for the larger (but sensibly sized) photo attachment.

One reason for writing this reply is to see if all the messages in the thread come up before the photos load  - still blushing from my faux pas in this respect many onths ago.

It's so good to see pictures in the posts at last!

Two fantastic pics posted recently - must admit, I love the 1977 shot!

Re the 1977 picture, when I click on it to get the larger version it fails.  Anyone else having the same problem?

Works fine for me John

You say it "fails"  Does it display an error or anything?

Relieved to say it worked for me too. Now want to know how to add my own photo's having been away for three weeks and have missed such a lot.

All work fine for me as well

I am exceptionally impressed the way the messages all come up instantly independently of the number and size of photos which have been loaded as attachments to the various messages. This is a real bonus and should encourage the use of many photos within the individuals allowance limit. Very clever stuff

Very nice, my screensaver at work now is full of Plakias photos. No matter how many, there are always new aspects to this beautiful bay. God's own country.

Hi Andy,

When I click the small picture a new Internet Explorer window opens, pauses for a while and then displays a small box containing a red cross (the symbol for a missing picture).
I've tried refreshing, ctrl+f5 and right clicking the box and selecting 'show picture',  nothing I can do will make it work.

By the way, all the others in this thread work fine.

~Strange problems here.
Personally, I've been able to see all the pics - and a big thank you to all the posters!
I would echo Andy's point though - smaller file sizes for pictures would be much better - especially for those with slow connections!

Hopper,

It's very interesting to see old photographs of Plakias. I like the one taken in 1977, but it's so different from my first memories of 14 years ago so that I can't place it, even if I try to compare it with Lance's 1982 photographs. Can you explain which buildings are on your photograph.

I assume that originally the only way of getting to Plakias (when it was the port for Myrthios) was down the old track from Myrthios. If so, when Lance's photographs were taken in 1982 was this still the case, or had the present road into the village been built? There was no road behind the beach at this time, so were there two parts to the village that were separated by the stream? Or am I completely wrong?

The picture is of my earliest memory of Plakias - now I know how to add pictures too.

Isn't it great to see Plakias without that horrible Forum building?

Hello Andy,
I tried to reduce the size with paint shop pro but the quality turned dreadfull. This is a photo that has been scanned, before the age of digital cameras. Sorry
Greecemad
I was in Plakias last in 1987. The road into Plakias was then a winding road from Mirthios, which entered Plakias on the eastern end past the old Alianthos, much the same as in 1977. I don't think I know who Lance is and where can I find his photos? Where does the road come from now? If you talk about the stream that flows through the middle, that was there already separating the village near the Lefkogia Hotel, I think. There was another (stream) drainage near the old Alianthos which you had to cross to go to the beach. The old Alianthos is the only hotel you can see on the photo. The houses closer were mostly private but rented out as rooms for tourists. So was the one we were in, which you can't see, its left of the photo. We rented that all May for little rent, but then had to leave because the prices went up. Lefteris (who I think is the famous donut man) was a fisherman then and lived in a little house half way up that hill. I think you can see the roof just behind us. I am the one with the guitar.
Hope that helps your Greecemadness.
cheers Hopper

Andy, is the limit of 1 Mb daily or permanently. If I want to post new photos, do I have to remove the old ones ?

I first went to Plakias in 1988 and the road in then was as it is today - so very probably the same as in 1987 and it certainly matches your description Hopper .
i dont though remember the Lefkoia Hotel - I found the Livicon oin my first visit and have been a regular there ever since. I certainly remember the pre Forum days

Hopper,

I can now see on your photograph what looks like the road in its present position. Lance Chilton's photographs are on this website on the following page:-

http://www.plakias.co.uk/townpopups/oldplakias.htm (http://www.plakias.co.uk/townpopups/oldplakias.htm)

On  these and another one I have seen somewhere there dosen't appear to be a road behind the beach, in front of the Livikon and Lamon Hotels, so what was the access between the road into Plakias and the other end where the port is, or was it on foot or donkey along the beach?

Ostraco's comment about the Forum baffles me as I can't remember it not being there. I have taken a photograph from the same point every time I have been to Plakias and can't see it on any others either, although on some of the later ones there are so many trees and traffic that it is difficult to see much of the buildings.

[attachment=26:attachment]Finally dug an album out of the attic yesterday - photo taken on a walk around the headland at the east end of Plakias - a pleasant break from soaking up the rays and great fun going through the tunnels to the old gun emplacement.

I explored a bit this June and wondered where the cave led. Is there more than one? I didn't venture in-there might have been a minotaur or two about! Presumably a torch is a useful thing to have. The photo seemed to be taken quite high up-was that a scramble? Didn't come across a path but perhaps I was looking in the wrong place.

From memory there are two tunnels, the first one being the longer one. We had a penlight with us that died after about 10 seconds! If you enter the tunnel, then let your eyes adjust to the darkness for a minute or two you can just about see the outline of the tunnel. Interestingly, it was better on the way back - must be the way the sun was shining. Yes - it does look rather high up so I probably did climb up from the path to get a better photo.

Hopper, any chance you can reduce the filesize of your picture as it is 617.85k  I think that may be the problem why a some are having difficult seeing your photo

John, I have send you photos through your business email, as this forum does not seem to leave room for attachments.
