Curses Andy,
I've been puzzling over this for days!
Six is so difficult.
So far, I think Dotty is nearest!
I was thinking about..
Heraklion,
Reythimnon,
Asomatos,
Lefkogia,
Damnoni,
Plakias.
But I'm sure there's something better.....
-
Just a suggestion, but how about:-
ALPHA
BETA
GAMMA
DELTA
EPSILON
ZETA
-
Hi John
Sorry for the late reply> Seashells = Ostraco of course!
Yvonne
-
You got it Yvonne - although I must admit that I didn't know that when I started using Ostraco as a nickname.
-
O.K. I'm going to be very boring, and suggest the following titles:
1 bar - New Member - for 6 months since joining
2 bars - Member - between 6 months and 1 year since joining
3 bars - Senior Member- more than 1 year since joining
You will notice that I have changed the criteria of entitlement to a particular category of membership in that it is dependent on the length of time one has been involved with the Forums (as is the norm with most organisations), not on the number of posts one has made on them. At present, someone who joined last year but made only 3 posts is a Newbie, but somebody else who only joined last week but has made 15 posts is classed as a Member. I always thought that this was odd.
Incidentally, Andy, why are you looking to set up six titles in particular?
-
Based on length of time is a good idea and I think I will make a suggestion for that to be added
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=1970\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Personally, I think number of posts is a better way of deciding member status. Someone who had been registered for a year and only made 2 posts should NOT have more privileges than someone who's been very active for a few months and made a lot of posts.
Any other views?

Ah but do the new members with lots of posts rush in and die out while true quieter fans stay the distance? whatever you decide you do a marvelous job Andy

Remember, these member titles will not give more privileges, its just the number of
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=1977\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Tsk Tsk and I thought we the longer serving would get all sorts of priveleges oh wo is me!

Well when you have made 50 posts, you will automatically be moved to the regulars group. You get extra privileges then
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=1981\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Looks like I will have to get another 10 posts in quickly then
Will I be able to add more photo's then?
-
Andy,
Gotcha. But six titles is a lot. I'll have to get my thinking cap on about this one.
-
O.K., Andy. This is my final suggestion:
1 pip - New Member- up to 6 months
2 pips - Contributing New Member- after having made 10 posts
3 pips - Member - between 6 months and 1 year
4 pips - Contributing Member - after having made 50 posts
5 pips - Senior Member - after 1 year
6 pips - Contributing Senior Member - after having made 100 posts
Remember, this is just an illustration: any of the eligibility criteria can be changed to whatever you think is more suitable. However, this kind of scheme recognises the length of time an individual has been involved with the site AND the number of posts he or she has made.
Noopsy
-
Noopsy's suggestion highlights the fact that you can't use a single measure (no. of pips) for two, essentially different things - longevity and activity. eg. using Noopsy's idea someone who registered in June 2003 but has not posted at all would have 5 pips. Is it possible to have the number of pips (1,2 or 3) to indicate how long a person has been a member and the colour (green, yellow or red) to indicate the number of posts.
-
In that case Andy, it may be simplest to have 6 categories but to have fewer than 6 names eg.
1 pip, Newbie = 0-10 Posts
2 pips, Member = 11-20 Posts
3 pips, Member = 21-30 Posts
4 pips, Advanced Member = 31-40 Posts
5 pips, Advanced Member = 41-50 Posts
6 pips, Veteran Member = > 50 Posts

Andy,
I included a time criterion because of what you wrote above.

My God, Andy, leave it as it is!!!!!

Hi Andy maybe a visit to Plakias would help you find six?
-
Andy's taken all his posts off this topic, and removed himself from the membership list. What's going on?
-
Hi Noopsy,
I've just got back home after a few days working away, and discovered the same thing when I was about to send Andy a message.
I really don't know what's happened, but I will try to find out!
-
Hope we haven't lost Andy permanently. In any case, a big thank you Andy for all the hard work you've put in to develop and maintain the site. One thing this topic has shown is that it's not easy to get 100% agreement on changes to the site. We all have very different backgrounds and personalities so we should expect a very wide range of opinions. We have one thing in common - we love Plakias
-
Can add nothing but agreement to your post Graham.
I mailed him last night - no response yet, but I'll keep you posted.
-
Oh dear - I have only just picked up on this thread, what on earth have we done?

Hmmm as a 'Textile' I could start to get an inferiority complex. What with this, anti-personnel mines and the like. Maybe I should shed some clothes and ascend to a higher plane
On a serious note, Andy if you are reading this please come back. Everyone appreciates your hard work on this forum and the help you give us.
Cheers,
Paul

I suspect that poor Andy took Yvonne's remark seriously. I'm sure she meant it light heartedly. I am a moderator on a multinational vast (2000+ active members) discussion list (FLUTE) and over the years have needed to learn to be aware of how this means of communication, emails, chat forums etc. can lead to very ambiguous interpretation of innocent remarks. No criticism of Yvonne - nor of Andy - these misunderstandings happen so unbelievably easily. The smileys are there to try and help but basically the complete lack of body language leaves much scope for these innocent misunderstandings. Come back please Andy - I know from 7 years of running a discussion forum that you attempt to do more for the members than any moderator I have ever witnessed and I know that we all recognise that and appreciate it. I don't think there is one milligram of malice on a single member of this forum but misunderstandings are still VERY easy.

I'm afraid I don't agree with you, John. Reading Yvonne's remark I can almost hear the shouted exasperation, and can understand why Andy took offence. I think that the best way to get Andy "back on board" would be for Yvonne to make her peace with him via e-mail.
As Graham and Karen have said, we are all different people with different personalities but there is one thing that unites us: our love of Plakias (even though some of us, including your's truly, have never been there). Let us try and build on this love that we share.
-
I agree with John R's comment of 23/7 at 7.43pm. It is very, very easy to misinterpret an E-Mail as you can't hear the tone of voice or judge the body language. I did it several times when I worked and you need to be very careful.
I suggest Ostraco, as website "owner" I think, ought to try and get Andy back. We all agree he is a very good egg and has done wonders for the forum. I'm sure that Yvonne meant no offence and a quick E-Mail to Andy to confirm this would do no harm.
On the original subject, I was quite happy with the original designations- not too keen on 6 ranks of membership; it smacks of ranks in the army (not that I was ever in it!). It's the content of the forum I'm interested in, not people's rankings.
-
Oh dear! What have I done? I am truly sorry if I have caused offence to Andy. It was only meant as a light hearted comment. Perhaps I shouldn't continue with my input to the forum any more.
Dare I come in September as planned?
Yvonne
-
Yvonne
I'm sure everyone knows you didn't mean to cause offence, it was just one of those very unfortunate things. I think we must all have done it once or twice and not realised until it was too late.
September isn'r far away now and I'm counting the days. I look forward to meeting you and everyone else over a beer or two!
Susan
-
Thank you, Susan. I appreciated that. Look forward to meeting you, too.
Yvonne

Yvonne,
Must admit when I saw the 'offending' post, I laughed too - thought it a light-hearted way of saying you were happy with things as they are.
Andy has a good sense of humour too, and I would be very surprised that this alone would cause him to withdraw,
I really don't know if this caused Andy to withdraw. I am frustrated to say that I an unable to get a response from him, having left messages in all the usual places.
Until I get a response - or a week or so has elapsed without word - I will comment no further.
Andy has been a 'net' friend of mine for about 6 years, although we have never met up, we have talked many times - and he was even coming around to the idea of joining us in Plakias for a holiday.
It also must be said that the forums wouldn't be running as they are now without his input - I sincerely hope his absence is temporary!
