Before Christmas Crete experienced some very strong, cold winds. The worst that anyone could remember. Plakias got off quite lightly but for those of you who are familiar with the far end you will be saddened to hear that the big tamarisk tree that many people use for shade has been virtually destroyed. For the moment it has just been left there. Next time I go down there I will take my camera and then post some pictures of it on here.

Sorry to hear this.
If you have some images to share please post them. .

A few pictures I took this morning of the damaged tamarisk tree and the beach. Very sad about the tree but the beach at the moment looks fabulous. Lovely soft sand and clear blue water gently lapping at one's feet.

I forgot to post a picture of the beach. So here it is. Doesn't it look just amazing?

And for anyone interested I have uploaded a video of the 'far end' onto Youtube showing the damage done to the tree. Just follow the link:

Thanks for doing this geoff.
We will see how this space will be used when the season begins, whether it is just cleared or if more sunbeds and umbrellas are added to fill the space.
It is certainly going to be hot down there come summer!

Thanks for posting the video. It's been a few years now since we've visited Plakias but we always headed for the shade under the tree whenever we went to the beach. It won't be just the shade we'll miss: we would often see familiar faces there each year. I hope the authorities leave the part of the tree that's still alive. Given a chance, it might grow and eventually re-establish this much loved feature of the far end.

We will miss them too ...

Going and miss it :-(
