If anyone is flying into Chania with Ryanair on Saturday 6th September 2014 and returning on 20th from Leeds / Bradford
we are willing to share the taxi fare with you to Plakias.

Wow that is forward planning.
Great idea... maybe we should use this thread as a liaison point for trying to find taxi shares.
Yet to book though it will probably be a bit later then the 6th.
Has anyone got any experience of getting 4 people (plus luggage) into one of the 'standard' Merc type taxis?
-
We managed 3 plus large suitcases....the seating is fine but it depends on how they fit four suitcases in to the boot...could be interesting ! Not sure if they use roof-racks and not sure I'd be happy if they did !
-
We got 4 passengers, two medium suitcases, one smaller suitcase and a folding wheelchair (the large wheels are removeable).
I think these taxis must have expandable boots!

People tend to take more than they need on holiday. But this time we are going to travel with hand baggage only and buy what we need in Plakias.
Good for the local economy too !
Well, that's the plan at the moment.
-
I would love to try hand luggage only, two things stand in my way:
1. Margherita
2. The amount of photography gear and gadgets I bring in my hand luggage
Other than that i'm good to go

Booked !!
Due to arrive in Chania 13.00
If no takers we are thinking bus to Rethymnon and bus to Plakias. Should have plenty of time.
Wonder how many people have done this ??
It's not that i am a tight Yorkshireman( Ha Ha ) just prefer hiring motorbike while in Plakias.

The buses are quite reliable as long as you remember to purchase your ticket from the kiosk in advance...that catches some people out. Both Chania and Heraklion have regular bus links (a friend managed it with no problems at all) and, although you may need to wait for the Plakias bus, these are now pretty frequent too....and it's much cheaper !

I would agree that the coach service is a cheap and reliable way of getting to Plakias: I use it all the time.
-
Yes we also use the bus service - very good and very reliable
-
Haven't used the Cretan bus service recently, but on mainland, and even on smaller islands, have been pleasantly surprised by Hellenic service, re frequency, timeliness and price.
Whilst the saving, relative to a taxi, is a nice 'extra', as discussed elsewhere on this forum, it can be a pleasant part of the journey when time permits.
We have used the bus to/from Rethymno, however, some years ago. Even then, very happy and if frequency has increased then I assume that would be even happier now. Worth a try in my opinion.

A taxi is 100 euros each way, a bus ride is...?
Barny.
-
last year approximately 15 euros per person one way - If you look on the KTEL website that gives you times and prices
-
Thank's for the responses.
As we arrive mid-day the bus is a very likely option to Plakias. But looks like a taxi back as it's a mid morning check in.
Then at least we can hire a bike for the two weeks.
-
Cheaper to hire a car for the day than get a bus if there's more than one person then?

Hi, we arrive at Heraklion at 2205 from Manchester on 26 Septmber, heading for Plakias, anyone wanting to share a taxi?
-
Taking everything into account we have decided and organised car hire this time.
Thankyou for the replies, won't be long now !!

I've used the buses on holidays and leading walking groups over Sfakia and Omalos. Great way to get around. Fairly comfortable and on time. Just check the website for times. You can also leave luggage and head out for a bit for a small charge. If I were you I would consider a night in Chania at one end or other of the holiday. Interesting place with plenty accommodation.
-
Cheers Billy, might just do that. Although we are staying in Plakias we might even stay over in the Sfakia region one night and go to Gavdos.
Don't like everything set in stone and that's the advantage of self catering you can do your own thing.

Loutro is a great place to visit for a night too from Sfakia. But once you've been you want to go back for longer
