Hi Gang,
Is this still happening to the airport?

Therefore, a new airport at Kastelli Pediados has been planned. The project is originally expected to be completed by 2015. The cost of this airport will be approximately 1 billion euros. When the new airport is up and running, the existing airport at Heraklion will cease operations

It should have closed 25 years ago - one of the worst airports in Europe!

On the other hand......at the end of the holidays, sitting on the benches outside the building, sipping a cold beer, smoking a cigarette, watching the people go by, I'd certainly would miss that!

In the current economic climate a new bench seat on which to sit and enjoy the last bit of sunshine is most unlikely let alone a new airport. 

Anyone still thinking that this might happen is, I'm afraid. in la-la land.

Heraklion Airport has just recently expanded . Any closure under the present climate is rediculous. ,! And won't happen. I haven't had a problem with Herkalion Airport. Expect last year. And I've been going for 15 yrs now..
Out of preference Ill flying to Chania his year. Just for a change ,!
But Heraklion Airport will never ever close regardless of its reputation !
