Title: Anyone there? Excited yet?
Post by: daza on April 11, 2012, 02:12:28 PM
C'mon - somebody out there must be getting a bit excited about their up-and-comming holidays. I've got 41 days to go and pounds (weight) to shift yet so I can get my summer kit on/off!
Swimming and gymming isn't helping - but that might be something to do with the EXTRA carbs needed/consumed to function normally as a result. That and the Mythos from Morrisons to get me back into the holiday mood! Awe- I can't wait!!!

Trying not to think about sunny Plakias too much at the moment. We're not going until mid September this year. I'll be enjoying the UK summer (if we have one), and Cornish beaches until then.

We aren't going 'till September either, we normally go in July, which is the buisiest?

We are also going mid September. Looks as if it will be quite a party :))
I suspect probably busier in September than July ??

September seems well busy then!! Is anyone going in May?- Is Plakias open then? If it's as good as so many of you are making out - I might return in September if only for the party! I take it the weather is still good then or so many of you  wouldn't be going.

Yes, getting exited now only 68 days to go, we have started putting bits and pieces to one side ready. I keep checking out the weather on the nearest webcam I've found which is just up the coast at Sfakia (http://www.beach-webcam-crete.com/ (http://www.beach-webcam-crete.com/)) the Taverna there doesn't look open yet, but there are a few brave souls getting on the beach.
Ostraco - you can forget summer here, any chance of that disappeared when they introduced a hosepipe ban.

We've got just 19 days to go.....can't wait !!!!!!! will post info/gossip etc when we get back at end May ....hope to be there when (baby Freddie) is born.

The weather for today shows 21 going up to 26 next week.

http://www.holiday-weather.com/plakias/forecast/seven-day/ (http://www.holiday-weather.com/plakias/forecast/seven-day/)

Our friend from Rethymnon rang last week & said it is a very difficult time for all of them now. Petrol 2Euro Ltre & many people now walking rather than drive their cars.
Taxi driver's are finding it difficult too.

We will warm the beach up for you all & sample a few Mythos (rude not too)

Les&Dave :)

In my experience the weather in Spring (say May) or Autumn (say mid Sept to mid Oct) can vary between totally cloudless days to rather indifferent. For instance, Oct 8-10 last year was dire, with periods of extremely heavy rain and wind and the most mountainous seas I have ever seen in Plakias.

If you want to be guaranteed wall to wall sun then you need to go in high summer, but then it is too hot for many, can be extremely windy, and you will pay the highest prices.

Spring and Autumn are great for walking (assuming it isn't raining) and the sea is at a reasonable termperature for most.

It is a well established fact that Autumn is much busier in Plakias than Spring. I have never understood why (does anyone know?) as it doesn't apply to other parts of Greece I have been to. The best tavernas are full from about 8pm until late.

We still have 73 days to go. Sad to hear things are so tough for the locals now the terrible austerity measures are causing hardship. Worse is yet to come too. I hope the money tourists spend will help the Greeks and make life a little more bearable. We will only be spending cash and not using plastic at all.  The small businesses can then use their own judgement.

September has become one of the busiest months in many of the Greek Islands. The price to Holiday in September is now generally higher than June and early July.
The Ionian, Dodecanese, Sporadese and Cyclades are very busy and the month is second only to August.
We find October can be fairly busy on Rhodes and Symi. The season lasts a bit longer. They will be enjoying their second spring with the wild flowers blooming after the odd heavy rain during the month. Fantastic for walking.

I can only think the reason September is more popular than spring is because the sea is warmer and people are trying to ward off the impending winter.
We love May on Crete and have only experienced the odd rain shower. We also find if it is raining on one coast the other will be in sunshine.

Hello daza,

my husband and I, we will be in Plakias from the 20th of May until the 3rd of June. Normally, we prefer the beginning of May but this year we decided to go a bit later. Last year it was very cold and we had a lot of rain and now we hope it will be better.
Our flights, the accomodation and the taxi transfer are arranged and we are looking forward to our next stay in Plakias.

Greetings from Germany,
Kerstin and Peter

We have to wait until the back end of June. Away to Furtaventura in a couple of weeks, to start of my tan . Sp I won't be blinding anyone with my bright white skin at the far end this year lol.

I am hoping my Welsh windburn will be mistaken for a tan. No winter holiday this year to top up last summers tan.

Some thoughts (in no particular order) about my recent trip with Olympic staying at Dora.

The second week of May was the quietest I have ever seen Plakias. At Dora only 4 out of the 9 units were occupied. It was full from 15/5.

There was no Olympic rep the first week of my stay although we were met by a visiting rep on arrival (and could choose which apartment to have).

The rep (Les, who did part of last year) arrived 15/5.

Mousses has now taken over the redundant Town Hall and is converting it to kitchens. It has also taken over part of Gorgona so Mousses is now 3 units wide and must be one of the largest tavernas in town. Their prices are essentially unchanged for at least the 3rd year and their house white and retsina are still much better than the red IMHO (2.50€ for half a litre)! Adonis, for many years the chef there, now seems to be the boss and there is a new chef.

There are sun beds at the far end and the guy running it (same as 2011) puts a few more out each day. By the second week of my holiday virtually all were taken on sunny days. Getting into the sea seemed even more difficult this year owing to the large number of large stones washed up by the winter storms. Donut man Mark 2 is there on sunny days.

The "new" development townside of Palegremnos seems virtually totally deserted.

Sergeo (at Mousses until 2010) is now at Korali.

All the seafront tavernas from Korali to Mousses have a full quota of set menus back.

As always I met so many people in town and on the beach whom I have met before.

Heraklion airport was the quietest I have ever seen it with no problems getting a seat in the departure lounge. As for the last 2 years the "duty free" shop was doing no trade at all. Whisky over 20€ a litre!

I was told by Denis and Chris and others that Babis and Despina have handed the running of Medousa over to their offspring. I just hope the offspring know which table to reserve for John R come the autumn.

Last year Babis had all but dropped out with his eldest son taking over (brilliant he is too). Despina was still working over hard as usual and she certainly needs an overdue rest. Has she dropped out - if so who is her replacement - younger son or daughter ???

Kosta is now doing the cooking at Medusa and the report I had two days ago from someone there was the the results were more than excellent.

Just returned from Plakias....had a wonderful 28 days staying at Kosta C ...first 2 weeks lovely & hot & then a tad cooler with a few showers that didn't last long. (Angelo arrived second week in May & in normal fine form)
Everything as beautiful as usual and prices very good, nothing seemed to have gone up, infact some things alot cheaper...this was good as exchange rate was around £1.22/23 even fuel was less than in October. Many taverna's have really good 'meal deals' & local produce as superb as usual.....Feta & Raki very good.!!!

We had a brilliant 'Sunday Arts & Crafts Day' at the library & bought some lovely items made by the local crafters. We had a very interesting breakfast there ...Mythos & Devonshire Pasty  :) (made by Eve) such a fantastic cook.....

The exciting news was that baby Freddy (Lewis) was born while we were there & they are all doing well.

We met up with Tom & John & it was fantastic to see Tom so well after his terrible illness & op last October. ( Bazucca Dog) was especially pleased to see him...Good Luck Tom !!!!!

We will be back mid August so for those of you going in June & July have a wonderful time.!!!!

Dave&Les  ;)

Thanks Dave and Les, we will :)
What is like at the far end this year? We missed Plakias last year but did hear a few reports about the sun beds being to close, and the naturists being pust out.

Hi Davos
the far end was very quiet...infact so was the resort....but the sunbeds were (maybe because it was start of season) fewer in number & close together as they were last year.
Most naturists were using the dunes.
There is a notice saying ' No Nude Bathing') outside the top Beach Bar (Paligremnos)
Anyway we're sure you will have a fantastic time.
Keep the beach warm for us...we will be staying at the Paligremnos in Aug/Sep.

Hi Dave and Les -

Glad you had a good time.  We noticed the "no nude bathing" sign last year, but the far end was not affected.

We are going in July so thought we would miss you, but we also couldn't keep away (or pass up a bargain) and will be there on 28 August for a week, so we can arrange to meet up then.  No doubt you will see us as we go for our early morning swim.

It will be great to catch up with you again!!!  ....we will be  there 12th Aug til 9th Sept...

Have a good time in July.

Sounds mighty fine to us. Can always escape the wind if you have a car or stay and watch ones hat flying out to sea whilst getting exfoliated by the sand.
My other half has just unpacked Her september 2011 plakias holiday suitcase and is in the process of repacking for Plakias 2012.
Not long now, the excitement is building, cannot wait for some proper sunshine.  ;D
