Title: Taxi blockades
Post by: Arnaki on July 22, 2011, 05:49:01 PM
I have seen news of taxi blockades of Heraklion Airport and other airports and ports.  Reports are that these are to go on indefinitely. Is this the case and if so how far do people need to walk from the airport building to get to the transfer coaches?  Any news from the ground would be gratefully received.  We aren't due out until mid August, but perhaps other people who, like me, are not so nimble on their feet might also be interested to know.

Got our tickets today so counting down!

Just what those in the Cretan tourist industry trying to battle against difficult economic times didn't need!

It's only about 200 yards to where the transfer coaches are parked, so not too far!

I'm a bit worried as during my return journey I only have 1 hr. between arriving at Heraklion bus station and my plane's departure.  I was therefore planning to use a taxi to take me to the airport (instead of the usual airport bus).  I just hope that the report in one of the news items above that taxis have moved the target for their protests to other locations (away from the airport) will continue to be valid on the day of my departure, and that I won't risk missing my plane.

Hello all - Thanks for the information; the links are really useful.

Noopsy - I hope you get to and from Plakias okay.  Our visits overlap, so perhaps we will see you off again in the Livicon.

When I arrived on Monday the taxi drivers were blockading the airport again, and traffic coming into the airport was at a standstill and tailing back almost to the centre of the town.  I only got to the bus station because some complete, but kindly, stranger who was dropping someone off at the airport gave me a lift past the picket lines.  Apparently the leaders of the taxi drivers were meeting the government at 1000 hrs. today to try resolve the issue but I don't know what the result was.

Arnaki - I didn't know you were coming: there was nothing on the calendar the last time I looked.  I'll keep an eye out for you.  Weather here is great with very little wind at the moment

The suspension is until the 5th September, the day the Greek parliament reconvenes after the summer recess.
