According to our experience with TAXI4YOU: 90 minutes
We can recommend this service. Zak is very reliable and a very good taxi driver.

We have used taxis from Heraklion to Plakias and Chania to Palechora on a number of occasions and all has been well. Sometimes a little faster than I would have chosen but perfectly safe.

Sue and I have made the journey many times since the early '90s by hire car en route to our beloved Stella Studios in Plakias and I'd say 1hr15-1hr30 depending on traffic, even in something as atrociously underpowered as last year's Kia Picanto where you had to choose between forward momentum or the air con but never both together! Having said that, I am a motorsport journalist and road car tester by profession :-)

We give ourselves two hours - but then we stop to buy food and fuel, so it probably only take 90 mins.

OK So it seems like
Racing Driver - 1hr15
Taxi Driver 1hr30
Tourist 2hr
I agree it can be done it 1hr30ish when not accompanied by my PDC (Permanent Driving Consultant) when I go to pick up visitors.
Question for G&S - what are your timings - how did you split the 1hr15 - how long Plakias to Rethymno then Rethymno to Heraklion - just interested

Taxi Driver 1hr30
Tourist 2hr
I have to confess that 2 years ago late one evening I found myself overtaking a taxi driver en route from airport to Plakias. It was a very fast journey - can't remember my journey time exactly but it was rather short.

Never actually timed how long it has taken us to get from Plakias to Rethymno compared to from the latter to Heraklion. I just seem to remember that 1hr15-1hr30 (without any stops) has pretty much been the norm over the years. Usually helped too by travelling at times of day when traffic tends to be fairly light.

(sorry about the first posting.Finger trouble)
We travel from Heraklion to Plakias at about 4pm.
Time to Rethmilon is about 1 hour 10 mins.
Then about 35 mins to Plakias.
BUT:
we assume that everyone else on the road has the right of way and keep well out of their way and do not try to break the land speed record !!. ( in a Toyota Yaris ?)
We did not find the time from Chania to be much shorter...or was that just us ?
We will have to try both this year, Chania in May and Heraklion in September.
But one thing is for sure:
We will never do either journey again in the dark!!!!!!
Roll on May 10th.

We always do it in the dark - find that the easiest - roads much quieter and taxis easy to overtake :-))

We're happy making the journey either during the day or at night, although I guess that even when you know the route very well it's a little less taxing driving during daylight hours than in the dark of night. The downside to daytime runs though is the extra traffic, which some might understandably find equally off-putting. Many of the drivers you encounter are not known for their patience or tolerance when a hire car impedes their progress.

Has anyone 0f you used this route from iraklio to plakias? We think about an alternative as we drove the "New Road" so many times in the past that it became our "Old Road".
Google maps says 2:58 hrs for this but I think this is a little bit optimistic ...

This is the one past Agia Galini, we did it once when we took a wrong turning at Iraklio, the time is about accurate, not much longer depending on the way you drive, there are no major obstacles and the road ofcourse is much quieter and you get the chance to see another part of Crete again!
