Title: Booze and fags
Post by: Mike from Sussex on January 13, 2010, 04:09:22 PM
The Greek Government have just upped the tax on alcohol and tobacco.

Alcohol is up by €2.50 a litre (applied to the actual alcoholic content, not the volume of the drink). I don't know the tobacco rise, but it will inccrease the cost of living for most Greeks considerably

If correct this will increase the price of my favourite tipple to bring home (raki) from €6.00 to €7.50 for a 1.5litre bottle.

That's assuming it is only 40%

And assuming it is not “home made”. The old tax level on 1.5 litres of 40% spirit was nearly €7, Mike.

According to the Beeb, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8449252.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8449252.stm) the new taxes are €13.7 for a litre of alcohol and 70% (up from 57.5%) on cigs.
