Title: cat control
Post by: dimitri on September 22, 2009, 07:31:19 PM
interesting article in the paper regards locals on rhodes culling the cat population, poisend by the taverna owners et al once the tourista"s have gone home.noticed this on a couple of othe islands ive visited, thera, ithica and the mainland too.wondering if the cat population on crete has reached epidemic proportions yet?if so are they at it too.the only sighn of cat control i ever witnessed was ethelabia the mother of georgos the one time resident of the bar under mirthios youth hostel, throwing a few kittens over the edge of the car park.please note i like animals and am just as worried as you about their treatment in greece.greeks on the whole do not form the sentimental bond to animals that we do,witness the large amount of dogs left in barrels etc ,with meagre and sporadic rations and rough tratment at the hands of their owners.
please report back on current cat situation.

I'm sure that GAWF have the situation in hand and have an education programme in progress. Have done for years!

What do you mean?

I think it was a strange post from Dimitri seeing as in previous posts he claims to know Plakias & Crete very well?! The situation in Plakias regarding cats/dogs has improved alot over the years mainly due to local animal welfare organisations i.e Friends of Rethymno & more. It is still bad but slowly getting better.

I do not understand either if an animal lover surely you would not just watch some one throw kittens down the mountain? I for one would not!

I have to say I also found the other posts odd except from Travellin Gran who clearly shares my love of animals. I agree with her, spend a minute donating a few euro's to a worth while cause in Crete rather than pointless comments on the forum.

I have thought for a long time that we are all meant to love Crete & especially Plakias & share info etc so why are there such hostile comments being made so often, life is too short...

I mean, I made a little bit of humour, nothing directed at animal cruelty whatsoever, a simple statement of "me ? how?" maybe some people had a giggle?
Then all this starts up!
Can we not realise that a bit of humour regarding animals and humans has been around for a long time?
Sorry if anyone got upset.

If all the posts were read in context Barny, some people wouldn't jump to the wrong conclusion.

I notice that Dimitri has gone quiet!!

OK George but soon the big plane will 'whiskas' away to sunny Plakias.  Flying is better than going from 'felixtoe' on the sea cat?

Rowena
check out the last time i was in plakia,i was living in the village then and had to take local sentiments in to consideration.note i write from the viewpoint of someone who lived with them in their home, not as a passing tourist.what they say to your face and what is happining are not always the same thing.i repeat i lived and worked on crete mainly in the plakias area for two years,i have a good level of greek and socialised with my hosts and workmates in my spare time, the cafe and hotel owners you mainly meet have a vested interest in being nice to you much as your pub landlord here does.on the animal side i dont recall any locals who had animals other than the ones that were of some use ie chickens donkeys etc.look forward to seeing angelo walking his pug on plakias seafront on my next visit. great puns though a most amusing read.apart from the odd catty remark.

There are some, but you hardly ever see them.
They're very shy for fear of being run over by a pick-up truck (see thread from a few years back).

Wasn't there a report from last year sometime that Pavlos from Kyma was chasing one along the front with the intension of GBH?

Now we know why the 'Eastenders' title page has been updated, Chris nicked the river!!
