Title: Mirthios
Post by: daffyduck on June 12, 2008, 02:53:58 PM
Hello all, we're planning on staying in some apartments in the village of Mirthios in late September.  We will have a car but won't want to use it too much in the evenings.
Is Mirthios a nice village?  How easy is it to get to Plakias from there?  Will we be able to go to busyish tavernas etc?  Any information at all welcome!

Yes - Mirthios is a very nice village with incredible views all round - especially of Plakias which lies hundreds of feet seemingly straight below you.

This all depends on how fit you are. There is a VERY steep path / track down to Plakias suitable on foot - some vehicles - mainly local also use it. The main road route winds round and is a bit far for walking on a regular basis. This steep track is also a bit iffy for navigation in the dark unless you know it well. You have to be careful not to slip going down and it is a seemingly long steep pull upwards. I would be happy to walk up and down it on occasions but some people won't be happy with that.  I might tire of doing it every evening though. There are a couple or so of nice tavernas in Mirthios so you might not need to do that treck every evening. The overall distance is not a big problem (in my opinion) just the steepness.

We are in Plakias late September so our paths may cross on that steep slope.

Agreed. I can't believe there are many who wouldn't find it a real chore to do that path on a regular basis. Coming down it is in many ways harder than going up.

I've been in the Myrthios tavernas for drinks but not a meal and if you are eating when it is still daylight the views are spectacular. However, there is nothing like the selection you have in Plakias.

Myrthios is a lovely place to go day or night although it can get pretty busy in the evenings. It is easy to get a taxi to take you up there and cllect you when you have finished and we use Zach who picks us up from the airport.

Just back from Plakias, and visited Myrthios as usual, but using a taxi as the Train is no more!
The taxis charge 6€ each way, plus tip, so it is not cheap, and prices may well increase as petrol is now 1.34€ a litre (£1.10) and rising!
Do try the Plateia (spelling?), great views, and a wonderful, varied menu sure to please anyone.

We went to Mirthios in 2005 and stayed at Anna Apartments.

You are going to need your car for trips to Plakias as a minimum. The village is around 600m above sea level and a very steep climb if you want to walk it-not recommended after a night of a few beers in the main resort.

The village is very nice with a smattering of some good tavernas to eat and a good jeweller.

If the wind gets up (and it frequently does in the summer months), the village is very exposed, however it has the effect of taking the edge off the temperatures if it gets too hot.

Panorama is very good but you have to arrive early if you want all the menu. Otherwise"the dish is finished!"

600m is nearly 2000ft. Myrthios is 200m (655ft) above sea level and I agree it would not be recommended.
