i got my tickets tonight for manchester/chania tonight
i was disgusted to see that XL has reduced the baggage allowance to 15 kilos and now what to charge you £7.50 per person per journey for an additional 5 kilos, with the threat of £22.50 charge at the airport if you don't pre-buy the allowance
so effectively they have increased the cost of the flights by £30, seeing as most of us chose our airline by cost i think this is absolutely terrible

Was that the case when you first bought them. What I mean is that I purchased my tickets (for September 08) in August 07. I'm sure that at the time of purchase the luggage allowances were greater. Did they, can they lower that allowance after purchase ??
I've done a lot of flying (locally) with Easyjet recently and find them excellent - well at least consistent - with the way they treat us. Will most likely use them from Manchester next year (early book of course). I've always been a bit uneasy with XL

the form i got with the tickets says the allowance is changed from 1/5/08
i am not sure how they can get away with it, i'll be doing some enquiries tomorrow
-
I feared the same as I noticed the reduction in allowance on the web site but I was waiting on my tickets before worrying.
I have used Excel numerous times over the last few years and have found them very efficient - however they are getting greedy and having to pay for "extras" means costs have risen substantially. They seem to be promoting their own packages now more than flight only which is a pity.
If you end up needing to complain be prepared for a wait - in my experience at least 6 weeks to get a reply.
Be interested to hear how you get on.

i have just checked the site and that what it says there, i will also be checking my confirmation as well, but thats at work
as a matter of interest i checked monarch tonight and they are still at 20 kilos

When Easyjet changed their rules for having to pay for each hold bag I had booked some tickets before the date of that change. They did not apply that charge to me retrospectively - which was fair. To apply extra charges retrospectively (except perhaps when fuel surcharges are permitted) is really not on. Might depend on the small print but there must be some sort of contract at the point of sale which would be binding for most of the conditions displayed at the time of purchase - bar emergencies such as hand luggage restrictions applied at the time of a security alert..
Will be very interested to see how you get on - self interest !!

We booked months ago, via the web, with XL from Gatwick to Chania and it clearly stated then that the allowance was 15kg. They do seem to be the only airline with this restriction - but probably not for long, I'm sure the others will soon catch on.
We always pack more than we ever use, and if we run out of clothes this year we will have to make use of the 'far end'

Yes I'm afraid you are right, our Thompson flight from BMX also states 15kg (what a con)
fisrst, extra for the meal, now extra for luggage, where will it end?

Where one leads the rest will probably follow I guess. I agree with Chris that it is a cheek to impose this retrospectively. I suppose they will charge to use the toilet next. Even the most frugal packer would struggle to meet 15 kg. so it is just an extra charge that you have to pay.
My Monarch tickets show 20kg. I rate Monarch as worse than XL for legroom (I'm 6' 4" tall), check-in delays, and meal. It wasn't long ago that if you were tall and arrived early they gave you a seat with extra legroom for no extra charge.
I agree that easyJet is pretty good. They charge for hold luggage and food/drink but make you aware of this on the website. I don't understand why some people pay for priority boarding though.
Mike
-
Chris,
It all depends on the date XL took your money (deposit or full payment) .....
If it was before 05 Jan 2008, their contract terms specified 20kg.
On or after that date the contract is 15kg.
Check your receipt and give 'em hell if they are trying to break their contact terms.

I see what you mean Ian I phoned regarding my flight which I paid for in full (although by accident) about 9 months ago I held on to the phone for 20 min listening to music eventually I sent an email, I will probably get a reply as you say in 6 weeks by which time I will be back home. I'll see you in May Ian if not before. Alex

i phoned this morning, had to wait maybe 10 minutes, but got through, explained i had booked my flights last year when the policy was 20 kilos and they have given me the extra 5 kilos free of charge ( and are re-issuing the tickets)
i think thats fair enough

Fair enough yes - except for the many people on many flights who do not have your perseverance or realisation to make that phone call.

I too phoned XL today. Tickets with 15kg allowance have been sent to me but they will reissue at 20kg. Seems to be that they will try and get away with the 15kg allowance if they can, but change it on the customer's demand if the booking was on the old basis.
So worth a phone call (I'd only a couple of minutes to wait).

I usually weigh in at around 12kg - down side is that my hand luggage has lots of heavy stuff in it and I'm wearing more clothes than I would normally

We have just got back from a week in Fuerteventura. Going out the cases were just over 31 kilos and a bit over 33 coming back. Lord help us for a two weeker! Luckily I booked our XL tickets for this September as soon as Kosmar pulled out, but I will not be surprised if 15 kilos is the universal allowance by 2009.

I have two flights booked to Greece this year, both with a 15 kg limit. As I usually travel light, I thought this wouldn't be a problem. However, this thread has got me worried, so I have just thrown some stuff (including a pile of books) into my case and weighed it - 12 kg. So I think I should be OK. For me, the extra charge for people with extra luggage is better as I am not paying for something I am not using.

What I mean is that there is an extra charge for taking an extra 5 kg of luggage. If this extra charge was included in the basic ticket price, everyone would have to pay the nigher price regardless of whether they were taking 15 kg or 20 kg. So someone like me who takes less than 15 kg would have to pay more.
It's similar to what has happened to transfers. The transfer coach used to be included in the basic price, so anyone who hired a car and drove themselves had to pay for the coach transfer even though they weren't using it.
Is my logic understandable now?
Greecemad

i think you're missing the point, no one is taking extra luggage, we've been used to a 20 kilo allowance for as long as i can remember
the allowance has been reduced, we're having to pay for what we've taken as being normal
ah well if you're "OK" with it, fine...........

It's all about the little margins where the airliners in operate i think.
Perhaps the next step is not the luggage but yourself. 'Sir, you are 78kg, thats 5 kg less than the average. You receive 10euro. '

What an idea!
Until now the German airlines accept 20 kilo for each person. In May we had 3 kilogrammes more and we had no problems at our airport
and as we left Heraklion we had 6 kilogrammes more (due to the honey, the wine, the metaxa and so on). The woman at the counter said:
You have to much luggage! We did not react on their words. I said we have reserved seats and I handed over our reservation and she had a lot to do
to find our names/our reservation. The result: we could go without paying for our additional luggage.
We will see what will happen when we go to Spain in September.
-
Despite taking lightweight clothing, we were both well over the XL Airways baggage allowance including the extra 5 kilos I paid for for Maree (and even more so when we flew back) but noone at Glasgow nor at Heraklion was bothered. That may change of course but the weight limits were not being imposed.
On another XL topic, I paid £ 74.00 for extra legroom seats and had no problem on the way out but the idiot at Heraklion allocated normal seats at the check in for the return journey despite my asking for assurances! So once on board there was much seat shifting of passengers in seats with extra legroom but not paid for. The cabin crew did sort it bless 'em but it should not have happened in the first place.

I see XL airways have gone into administration this morning.
I hope all those affected can get alternative flights sorted out quickly.
One outcome is that flights into Crete next year are likely to be more expensive.

I have managed to get flights for our party with Easyjet. Cost me a LOT but the only compensation is that my XL flights were free with Tesco Tokens. As soon as I heard the news (lying in bed) this morning I leapt to my computer and made the booking.

We were going to florida in december with xl because we always use them to Crete, Last night I was suppose to send my final payment of £2200 and forgot, how lucky is that I was sick this morning when it came on the tv, I have already sent a couple of hundred but that is covered on my credit card and also through ATLO with travel city direct. I am now very weary who to book with even if its left to the last minute it could still go wrong. Alex

Didn't George travel out on XL? Hope he gets sorted out OK.
I have been watching the situation since Barclays declined to extend their facilities for XL. Managed to book an Olympic holiday with cheapo room in Malia starting next Friday. We will just tell the guide we are not using the accommodation and drive down to Plakias. Red eye flights with Monarch - ho hum.
Flights with Sleazyjet were over 400 pounds more expensive than the package holiday They couldn't be taking advantage could they?

I've had a narrow escape - as an independent traveller I've used xl.com for flights to crete for last 4 or 5 years and had it not been for a 50th birthday trip to USA this year I'd have been caught up too for sure. As it is I'll need to claim the flight booked for next June back on my credit card. Thoughts go to all those who are affected.

Oh to be stranded in Crete !!
But feel so sorry for those who have waited to go today.

Fingers crossed for those who are affected, hope they dont suffer too much distress and anguish
I'm sure we will all agree with these sentiments re XL. I'm sure many contributors to this forum are currently in Plakias, having flown with XL, or had hoped to go during the remainder of the season. A few things spring to mind:
1. There has been much discussion on the forum about independent vs. tour operator. One advantage of the latter is the ATOL protection which should see those flying with the XL airline on a package brought home by the CAA. The CAA will also pay for any extra accommodation. Independents probably will have to make their own arrangements and as someone else has said, other airlines may take the opportunity to milk a captive market.
2. The BBC said today that customers who had paid with a Visa debit card had the same protection as those who used a credit card. Barclays have told me that although Visa does provide some protection, in no way does it match CC protection. I have no means of verifying this and would be interested to hear what others think. If I ever book independently I'll be sure to use a CC, even if I do have to pay a supplement.
3. Travel insurance may cover losses but most policies have a significant policy excess these days.
4. I have booked a 2009 package holiday with Manos, the flight component of which was to be provided by XL. Manos E-Mailed me yesterday (before the news broke) that the Manos website was now subsumed into the Thomas Cook one, as part of the integration of the My Travel group into TC. Out of interest I checked whether the holiday I had booked was still available and found that the same Manos holiday was using another airline which departed on a different day of the week. It sounds as if TC knew something others didn't.
5. Kosmar (part of XL for a year or two) may be sold as a going concern. If not, think of the effect on a place like Paleohora, in some ways a Plakias-like resort just along the coast. Kosmar is the only UK tour operator featuring it I think. It will have a devastating effect on Paleohora, far worse than the effect First Choice pulling out of Plakias had.

Flights with Sleazyjet were over 400 pounds more expensive than the package holiday They couldn't be taking advantage could they?
I think they will simply be operating the "price increases as plane fills up principle" which is how they always operate.
I booked today at 07:15am
Did a dummy booking (for 3 of us) at 2pm today and it would have cost me another £400. So my 7am panic saved me £400 !!
Done a lot of flying with easyjet recently - many internal flights and to Venice this year and find them very good. Hope they continue to be good for our Crete flights !!

Just arrived with EasyJet. 2 hours late leaving due to air traffic delay followed by thunderstorm at Gatwick. Flight though was fine. We also flew with then in July and they were good, plenty of legroom.
In taxi now looking forward to a Mythos or two before bed!
I hope all those affected manage to either make alternative travel or have an equally fab time elsewhere if possible.
Cheers,
Paul

I heard yesterday that the first the aircraft crews heard about it was via text from other crew members. I know its heart wrenching to lose ones holidays but a lot of folk are losing their jobs and now it seems the apartment owners themselves are affected
The only consolation - if it can be called that - is that the collapse has happened towards the end of the season. Hopefully that will mean that the local tourist businesses may have limited losses this season and hopefully pick up custom from elsewhere next season. I had to make minor adjustments to my car hire as a result and my car hire operator said "We hear about this very big proplem, its terible!"
I'll bet that Ali is now glad she is not a Kosmar rep this season !!

Today I found an article in our news paper about XL Airways. I read more than 80.000 tourists are stranded in several countries all over the world.
I believe it will be very difficult to find flights for some many people. I also read more than 200.000 people are affected by this crash. It concerns
all these people which were booked on XL Airways during the next weeks.
I think it is necessary to have an insurance against such damages. It is one way to get the money back.
On the other side you have a booked accomodation but no flights and than it is very difficult to find suitable flights. I tried a dummy booking
but I could not find any flights from Leipzig to Heraklion within the next 2 weeks.
By the way... I hope nothing will happens with our flights to Gran Canaria next week because I am looking forward to our holiday.

Three weeks ago I flew out (with XL) to Mykonos for an island-hopping trip around the Cyclades. It almost all went to plan until yesterday when I was due to fly home, direct from Mykonos to Manchester. When I surfaced I was greeted by the news that my hosts had seen on the TV. They were very helpful and took me to the airport where there was very little information, other than that as I had booked direct with XL, ATOL would not arrange to get me home. So I went back to their house and used their computer to book an Olympic flight from Athens to Heathrow. I then had to get a boat to Rafina (for Athens) and, after arrival at Heathrow, travelled home by train arriving at 03:30 this morning. I am hoping to claim this on my insurance (minus the excess) as I have cover for scheduled airline failure.
-

This insurance company is setting up a scheme where for £5 per person they will insure you for £2000 for the cost of getting home if your airline goes bust while you are away :-

I successfully rebooked at 7am - only 4 hours after they went bust and secured alternative flights (fairly costly)
4 hours later the cost had gone up by another £400
In another 4 hours - no flights available.

George did travel with XL, (booked directly with XL over the internet).
I text him very early Friday morning but as yet have not heard back.
If he doesn't arrive in the office on Wednesday morning I will assume he is still in Crete.
His flight out was 7 hours late, so this could well be a holiday to forget.

I think the CAA (as part of the ATOL bonding) is chartering flights to bring holidaymakers home who left in the last 2 weeks; free for those with the bond (i.e. package tour clients) and on a commercial basis for those not. What will happen for those who are staying longer I don't know. Some, like Greecemad, will be resourceful and make their own arrangements for coming back.
On looking at my travel insurance I couldn't find any reference to what happens under the circumstances pertaining to XL and would be interested if anyone knows. One thing it did say was that you couldn't claim back any losses on airline mileage offers (e.g. Airmiles) or supermarket loyalty schemes (e.g. Tesco).
We all hope George gets back OK and hope he reports that in spite of hassle at the end, he had a good time.

Mike, we thought about this problem.
In Germany we get an chattel paper. Sorry, I am not sure about the translation. I had a look on the dictionary and I did not found an other translation.
Please help me, if it is not correct.
We get this paper with each booking about a tour operator. This paper is very important as to come home if such circumstances happen.
It means we do not have to pay for extra costs.
When we book the flights private we can effect an insurance it works on the same way. This insurance is not expensive. When I remember it costs a couple
of Euros.
At present we have a special credit card from the biggest automobile club in Germany (ADAC) and this card insured us from the moment of the booking
until the arrival at home. During the last days we got a letter and the conditions will be changed from the beginning of the next year. Until now the amount
of the journey is indifferent but from the next year they will raise the value.
We will see what will happens.

Hello Kerstin,
Your "Chattel Paper" sounds like our ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licence) protection. This adds £1 to a tour operator booking. Previously this was "invisible" but from next year tour operators seem to be listing it separately on invoices. This is part of a tour operator trend to charge and list separately things like this, in flight meals, extra luggage allowance, etc. Extra legroom seats went the same way a few years ago.
My guess is that the UK government will be forced to extend this scheme to airlines after the major problems caused by the demise of XL. Currently the best protection for flight only bookings seems to be to pay by credit card, as the postion re. travel insurance seems unclear and mired in the small print.
Mike
ps. George has a lot a friends on this forum and we all look forward to hearing soon that he is back safely, Heathrow (see Peter & Dawn's posting) notwithstanding.

Saw that they'd gone bust pretty early (the story had only been on the BBC site for half an hour) and managed to book with easyJet for 340 euros. On Saturday night. Extra day's holiday and the cost is covered by my credit card company (I rang them and checked).
Currently typing this in Ostraco's supping a small Mythos. Beach beckons. Happy days...
