Good idea harribobs. We like our walks but one morning last year we had a chill out morning - a couple of beers (not bears, as I originally wrote ) at Gialos, the cat asleep on Karen's lap and this view:

Looking forward to September.

A nice picture to remind us what we like about the place, i.e. the food and ambience. I just hope the Greeks adopt our more civilised approach re. smoking some time soon.

Had not noticed that , Mike ! The pic was taken several years ago at Mannousos taverna. The guilty party is my friend Stella. I don't smoke , never have . Stella does not smoke cigarettes anymore but is addicted to the nicotine chewing gum !! Roll on June .

Mike,
Is this a reference to the news that Greece is to ban smoking in public places by 2010, or just a coincidence! I wonder how they will get on with it, given that it appears that about 90% of them smoke!

...and they don't really take a lot of notice of authority anyway, they should all be wearing crash helmets on M/C's but how many of them do.
I did see one once, but he had it hanging off his arm, so I suppose he was legal.

Greecemad,
By omitting to caption my photo of the remains of our meal , I do appear to have inadvertantly started a discussion on smoking........Sorry about that.
I don't smoke and my friend now doesn't (honest)!
This pic was taken in 1986 at Manoussos. The other pic's from the same evening were pinned up on Manoussos' notice board and still there last year.

Hello Greecemad,
No I didn't know that- probably an EU requirement. I agree with George's later comment about Greeks not following the rules anyway. Are you sure as little as 90% of Greeks smoke? I would have thought nearer 100% (for men anyway).
The smoke in tavernas and aggressive, uncontrolled dogs are probably the only 2 things I dislike about the place.

Why waste money on expensive nicotine chewing gum? Simply buy ordinary gum and smoke at the same time!

What ban this week? I got my info from yesterday's Kathimerini, which reads:
Ban on smoking by 2010
Greeks, among the heaviest smokers in the world, will be running out of places to light up in a few years as the government moves to adopt European Union guidelines protecting people from passive smoke.
The Health Ministry announced yesterday it will gradually ban smoking in public places, such as cafes and restaurants, by 2010.
The stricter measures, aimed at protecting smokers and non-smokers, have the backing of most Greeks.
According to a recent survey, eight in 10 Greeks believe that banning the habit from all public places is not an infringement on personal rights.
Additionally, 73 percent agreed that the reduction of smoking should be a target in national government policy.
Authorities will also launch a marketing campaign aimed at preventing youths from taking up the habit.
Some 46 percent of males are regular smokers with the respective percentage among women reaching 31 percent.

I would agree with you, but for the official figures, see above - roughly Men 50%, Women 30%.

Hello Greecemad,
My guess is that they define a regular smoker as someone who smokes more than 100 a day.

sorry, cannot upload for some reason
assuming you have fixed your computer security problem
here's a thread with a tutorial uploading photos (http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=825)

Harribobs thanks, I did it exactly like that but I'm told all the time that I cannot upload cause the file is to big, it's 192K so I don't understand ???
-
It may be a website problem - I don't think we have unlimited space for uploads.
So, either we've hit the limit for this month
- or - we hit the absolute limit!
If you have any old (out of date) pictures already uploaded, try deleting them and try again.

it's not a website limit but possibly an individual limit, but i would have thought chas's answer still applies
