Title: ATM
Post by: dean on July 05, 2007, 08:28:20 PM
Hi,
Looking forward to going to Plakias for the first time in September. I believe there are no ATMs in the village, is this still the case. If so are there any near by and where are the best places to cash travellers cheques if I have to (relunctantly) bring them with me.

Also I assume the Costas Chrysoullas Stds are as good as we have read on other sites.

I have sent a placemark file to Ploppy giving the location of all 3 ATMs and various other things, so these should appear on the map sometime.
Apart from the ATM at the Alianthos Beach there is one next to the Plateia Bar and one at the town hall.

I called my bank yesterday, just to make certain.
If you withdraw cash with your 'Credit' card, they will instantly charge you around 2.5%, but if you use your 'Debit' card, it's free!

Well free-ish.  Most banks have a foreign currency surcharge on money drawn abroad with a debit card.  Nationwide is an exception as there are no surcharges and you get a better rate of exchange than at the Bureau de Change.  I believe that there are a few other banks (but not the big four) who offer this service.

I agree Allan, with the currency fluctuation that's only to be expected, but we're only talking a few euros here at the most.

Agreed. Using a Nationwide credit card abroad is significantly cheaper than using cash as the exchange rate they give is so much better. Just make sure the transaction goes through in € rather than letting the shop or whatever convert to £ (at an exchange rate which will hugely favour the establishment you are dealing with).

Thanks everyone. Great news. Fortunately I'm with Nationwide so no charges.
