Found those pictures on a german site.

yes, what a nice view...
btw: the site is http://www.kretaforum.net (http://www.kretaforum.net)

Doesn't look like they had started the harbour then. They seem to be casting and stockpiling dolos blocks which will probably form the breakwater for the harbour.
-
let's say it all very cretan!

For your collective information, they have been working on this project since the end of October- You may not realize, but there is a lot of material that has to be moved to the site- to be specific, the etimate is 6000 truck loads- I do not know what road you art talking about George, but there is nothing wrong with the road to Souda-just the occasional pothole, but you can jump over that . Yes, they will continue to work through the summer, but it should bother none since all the traffic comes fron west of town- nothing will come through Plakias-
Now, just wait when the new road goes in to the new harbour- in front of the two new villas behind Ostraco- you know the empy lot on your way to the secret nest- It will continue behind the hotel Marilena going east. Then you will be in for some real fun. I suspect this will proceed in the near future- one chap is holding out yet as his property is affected- Will keep you informed.
As far as other developments are concerned, just keep in mind that the lot east of Meltemi is slated for a substantial renovation- perhaps Chris may want to spen his 75K for a spot there?
Ah yes- Progress at last

You are welcome- It just occurred to me your question on the road- The pictures that have been posted are in fact the pictures of a new road -below the existing one to get access to the harbour- and yes that one needs work, but it is under construction- hope that clears things up

Certainly does, I've got to take Pete and Dawn over the new road across the Dragon, so as long as it's accessable by car, we'll be ok.

Santa,
I probably missed this when the new harbour was originally discussed, but is it intended for commercial or tourist boats, or both? Seems a bit far out of town for the tourist boats for foot passengers. Will the car ferry from Paleohora to Hora Sfakion be extended to Plakias.

OK Mike- just for you-since you were not paying attention when we discussed this originally- The harbour is officially being built for fishing boats- to provide more protection than the one in town. There are no plans for tourist boats or other commercial boats, but I would not rule out private boats- you know - sailboats -that type of transportation or small power boats. No there will be no car ferry extension as I understand the situation.

it's just very dirty around the site area and the tarmac is suffering badly near to the selia turn off but it's perfectly useable
i think i should let Denis and Chris describe the work thats going on

Can't really add much more than whats been said and shown on here.Only that we know 2 of the guys that are working there and they told us it could be 2 to 3 years before this is finished.
Mind you we were sitting in Sifis at the time and it was 2.00 in the morning so at that rate it could be 3 years!!

we usually stay at SKINOS 2 which I think is beyond this new harbour development. Does anyone know if I'm right in thinking that?

if i remember correctly where the skinos 2 is, the new development is quite a bit further on.
if you remember where the road takes a sharp uphill left turn....it's there
-
Thanks for that. We're going on June 26 for a week - can't wait. Bringing some American friends but will tell them not to tell anyone back home about Plakias.
Alison
-
Yes, don't tell anyone else.
It's busy enough already.
-
I belive Skinos 2 is just before the new harbour.
The concrete lorries are actually coming through the village, great fun as they can't get around the one way system!! At least they've slowed down a bit as they used to coming hurtling through the village in the winter.
The use of the harbour seems to be a bit confused. Some people think it is for local fishing boats only. However, the main consensus is that is all part of 'a big plan' i.e. to open up the south coast. Paleochora now have a deep water harbour, Hora Sfakion are just finishing theirs and I believe there are others to the east. Sometimes it is referred to as the new 'marina' and I think it is hoped that more private boats and tour boats will use it.

Thanks for the info Ali. Not sure whether we will be back to Plakias this year (we missed last year) but I hope the work on the harbour and the new development haven't spoilt the relaxed feel that Plakias has always had. In the longer term, the development east of Meltemi might have an impact on the Far End (as suggested in posts elsewhere).

At first, I want to say "HELLO" to all of you and also "SORRY" if my English is not perfect.
(It is a long time ago that I have learnt your language.)
During our 3rd stay in Plakias at the beginning of may, we have already seen the lorries on the small roads through the village.
They did not start very early in the morning, but all the day over.
Many greetings from Germany
Kerstin

Yes, they will continue to work through the summer, but it should bother none since all the traffic comes fron west of town- nothing will come through Plakias-
Santa
Hello Santa,
This conflicts with what Ali and Kerstin have reported, that the lorries are going through Plakias.

Its such a peaceful spot I shall be very disappointed if we have lorries thundering past.....I shall report when we get back.

Mike- Of course the conc. trucks - and they are not that frequent -come through Plakias- no different than if someone needs concrete for their house- What I was referring to is the trucks that haul the stones and dirt to fill in the harbour- None of those run through the town- I know- I spend every other weekend in Plakias- They start around 8 am and finsh at 4pm- Relax and enjoy your vacation

Hello Alison,
at the moment I do not know where you will stay during your holidays.
Our apartment was situated behind the Alianthos Garden and therefore we could not hear and see the lorries.
Of course from the Far End you will see the lorries but this is certainly no problem. They are far away.
In the evening the traffic was totally normal. You can sit in the Tavernas or Bars and it will be "quiet".
I would say, enjoy your time in Plakias.
Greetings
Kerstin
(By the way I hope you can understand the sentences, because it is a little bit difficult to find the right words.)

What are you thinking about the possibility: The truck drivers were on holidays too?

Hi,
We stay at Creta Spirit opposite the turning to Selia, sounds like the road is going to be busy with heavy trucks. Hope they don,t start early in the morning. It's sad to say but looking at the new developments taking place and those proposed to take place in the next few years our paradise PLAKIAS is going to be spoilt.
-
Hi Guys,
I am sat in Ostraco at 00:20 in the morning, so I may not be all that coherent after a few Mythos. I've made the acquaintance of Ali, but i;'ve certianly not noticed any concrete lorries going through the village.
Greecemad.

say hello to stelios from Mandy and Chris!
Yamas!!
-
We've just returned from Plakias and in fact the new harbour is exactly opposite SKINOS 2 where we were staying. As the rooms are above the road we couldn't see the development at all and only heard work going on there for about two hours on two mornings! We also only saw one lorry going down there. I imagine at this rate it will be some time before the harbour is finished!
We've not been for about eighteen months and as ever had a wonderful week. Every visit sees a few more properties but somehow nothing changes..... Hope the big new development of villas as you drive in does not spoil that
