Title: General Map of Crete
Post by: John R on April 27, 2007, 02:26:27 PM
I have just bought the Rough Guide map of Crete.

It is one of the best maps of Crete that I have seen - for general purposes. Scale is 1:140,000 and it is a rip-proof waterproof plastic map with a removable cardboard cover. The detail is superb, very clear and looks to be very much up to date. Maybe not perfect for say serious walkers in the mountains but every road and track is marked in detail. It has contours as well. Vastly superior to the 1:300,000 tourist maps handed out free by the hire care companies.

Not very expensive either. RRP £5.99 (cheaper I think at Amazon) ISBN 1-84353-239-5

I would say indispensable for anyone hiring a car.

Oh really - I had NO idea you were going so soon

Detail is very good for Sfakia - I've scanned it so look for yourself at http://www.flute.toucansurf.com/pm.jpg (http://www.flute.toucansurf.com/pm.jpg)

It says that it will survive a dunking in the sea. That is so useful for far enders who would not like to be parted from such a commodity and so can take it in the sea with them

Have a great time - hope the weather is at least as good as here in the UK :'(

This looks an excellent map for motoring. Does anyone know of something around 1:50,000 of the Plakias area which should be suitable for walkers. The best I have is Lance Chilton's map of the area.

Mike,

I have one of a series of 5 maps that cover Crete at a scale of 1:80,000. It has contours on it at 50m intervals and shows footpaths, but no idea whether it shows all of them. The one I have is Iraklion and was published in 1994. For Plakias, you would need the one that covers Rethymnon. These are published by harms-ic-verlag (German I think). Not sure whether I bought it on Crete or whether I bought it in Waterstones in Leeds, which has a large stock of foreign maps.

This caused me to look this up on the web and I found the following, a 1:50,000 hiking map of Crete:

Make sure that you EMPHASISE to them when you are going on holiday so that they can get it in time   If necessary repeat that information to make sure that they get the message

It certainly is Chris.
I'll stop poking you now I've got a response.

By the way, this is my favourite map of western crete. (http://compage.com/plakias/sfakiamap.jpg)
The scale is 1:100,000 so a bit easier on the eyes.
It is very up-to-date and you can buy it at the forum in Plakias for 8 Euros.
The 'white' roads are shown as are the major footpaths and it also includes the petrol stations and tyre repair depots.

I don't want to mention the publisher's name because I've already infringed their copyright by publishing the picture of their map.
They might not mind but then again they might.

So I'll send you a personal message containing their name and do the same for anyone else who wants to know.

15?

Might have to take a punt on this.
