Can anyone advise how long the car journey is, roughly, from Matala to Hora Sfakion ? Would I be quicker to go by Rethymnon ?

I would guess about 2 hours (maybe a little more) The road from Matala to Plakias is very good as is the road from Plakias to Hora Sfakia ( a wee bit winding and narrow around and through Rodakina) so there is absolutely no point going via  Rethymnon - definitely not quicker. I've done both journeys many times.

yeah!  an hour from Sfakia to Plakias, then an hour and a half to Matala, keep a good eye out for the right turn after Tymbaki, signposted as Phoestos or Festos (IIRC), it seems to come on you all of a sudden even if you're expecting it
