As Kenny Everett said, "How dare you be so young!".

'Sort-of'. There is a small area of the original Platia bar to the front and right-hand side, as you face it, that is still the Platia bar, as far as I can see. The left-hand side looks like a clothes shop, of some sort.

I used to like the place a lot, but in recent years I thought that it started to try to be something that it wasn't. Seems to be a trend developing? (See similar comments re Medusa and Siroco elsewhere on this forum.) Is it what people want? Not for me, but I suppose that time will tell. Perhaps I am just getting old and grumpy!

Yes, we tried a couple of weeks ago. Very nice, very good service and food, good value, even the loos are swanky; just not sure if it is what I look for in Plakias. Still, know to take DJ next time!

Is it posher than the Sirocco?

Yes, I think so. I prefer the 'simpler' Taverna feel.

Haven't tried the new place but we miss, in particular, the pastries from the old bakery. Always took some for the trip home.

Not the only new touch that looks a little out of place in Plakias, to me at least. Medusa has also become a little 'trendier', as has Siroco (OK, it's all relative!). We have had lovely meals at both, in their new incarnations, and the staff were absolutely great, but... They seem to have lost a little of the Taverna feel. Time moves on, I suppose.

Still OK at the end of last year's season. It is indeed a much nicer route than the concrete track!

Gossip / Re: Lance Chiltern and Marengowalks maps.

Hi Mark,
I was in touch with Lance a couple of years ago via marengo.com, which now appears to be defunct. I was interested in buying some of his images of old Plakias. Can't remember where we got to.
We found his guides very helpful when we first visited Plakias, presumably those for Rhodes would also be useful.
I  find his guides on amazon.com from time to time. Worth a try?

Yes, Sonja is still at Harakas, and for reasons of sentiment we always return at least once per holiday.

Plakias seemed a little quiet (May 2nd to 13th).

The Gavdos ferry in the harbour had gone, which is a bit of a shame, although something of that size and a likely profit always seemed a little optimistic to me, at least if Gavdos excursions were to be its major source of income. Does anyone else have more information on possible ferry services from the harbour?

Ah, I often wondered where the old beemer and side-car came from, sometimes saw it at Souda as well as in Selia,

Not too windy, but it is raining at present. Was lovely and sunny this morning, too.....

Just had a chat with a local chap who also thinks that coal transportation (from a mine near Lefkoyia) for embarking on shipping was the original purpose, using a horse-drawn light railway.

Arrived yesterday afternoon, sunny/slightly hazy this afternoon, and low-mid 20s.

Lovely in T-shirt during the day/early evening I have brought a sweater for later in the evenings and think I will need it to sit outside.

Haven't used the Cretan bus service recently, but on mainland, and even on smaller islands, have been pleasantly surprised by Hellenic service, re frequency, timeliness and price.

Whilst the saving, relative to a taxi, is a nice 'extra', as discussed elsewhere on this forum, it can be a pleasant part of the journey when time permits.

We have used the bus to/from Rethymno, however, some years ago. Even then, very happy and if frequency has increased then I assume that would be even happier now. Worth a try in my opinion.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Sirocco Restaurant

I hope that you enjoy Gio Ma as much as my wife and I do, and look forward to hearing of your own experience.

We will be there in just six weeks now, I will post on Sirocco as this thread has reminded me of the many pleasant evenings that we have spent there. We usually went for a bit of a seafood 'blow-out' after walking through Samaria gorge.

I certainly agree, there never seems to be time to visit all of our favourites in a fortnight and so we have largely stopped trying, I found that it was almost spoiling our holiday as we were obsessively trying to fit-in all of our favourite walks during the day and then tavernas in the evening. Mainly the reason that Sirocco dropped off the list, over the last couple of years, at least.
