ever wondered how the EU manages to spend all those euros?, well... when you see those nice new black top roads in the mountains again, you'll remember!
the village at the end of the road is Agia Ioannis, if i remember correctly, it's not really deserted but it is very quiet. we went to the taverna (next to the gate) hoping for a drink but was very disappointed to find it almost derelict. however i noticed that one of the rusty fridges outside was actually running, and found it stocked with all manner of beer, water and soft drinks, all priced up with post-it notes and a jar of money which must have contained 30-40 euros

Reminds me on the tavern at drimiskos beach next to Preveli... but it wasn`t that close to the sea...This is a taverna on the beach at Agios Pavlos.Harribobs stood in one place to take the previous picture then turned around and shot the picture of the taverna- Had lunch there myself- very nice. Correct?

I went to Lendas twice about 8 or 10 years ago. It was very quiet. If you know Sougia, then the village is (or was) a lot smaller. There were a few rooms places, a handful of small tavernas with a limited range of food and a couple of quiet bars. To approach it involves striking south from the Iraklion to Aghia Galini road at a place called Aghii Deka (Ten Saints). The road climbs over the mountains and it's a very steep drop (with spectacular views) down to Lendas. The village beach is small and pebbly but there was a large clothing-optional sandy beach, with free camping, over the headland that you can see on the photograph. Like a lot of the beaches on Greek islands, the beach varies from year to year - the first time I went it was very good, but the second time a lot of the sand had been washed away, so it wasn't as good and there was less space.

Thanks. It is difficult to find any where on the north coast to stay for a few days. We tried Georgioupolis a couple of years ago but after the second night we had had enough and headed back south.I liked Kalives when I spent 2 weeks there in 2003- no "far-enders" beach though. It had several particularly good tavernas I remember. Also Almerida, the next resort along to the east. Hania is easily accessible by bus from both. Plakias and Paleohora are better than both of these though- as Chris (Harribobs) has said, you can't beat the south coast of Crete.

Quote from: Stuart & HilarySougia Beach, but having difficulty working out your first photo. Hope to be there mid September, but unlike Plakias, Sougia doesn't seem to change from year to year.
Stuart
Stuart,
It is, of course, Sougia. If you know Sougia, the first photo is the end of the beach where there is a little beach beyond the end of the main beach. I think this is called 'The Bay of Pigs'. You can't see it on the photo, which may be why it fooled you - I think it's behind one of the big rocks. Last month you had to wade through water thigh-deep to get to this beach, and there wasn't as much beach as the last time I went.
IIRC there's a picture of Mandy on this beach somewhere on the board, maybe earlier in this thread.
Greecemad
You're right it was the Bay of Pigs end that was confusing. Walking round to that bay is normally ankle deep,so could the deeper water be due to a Spring tide effect? From a previous posting I think I gathered you got a taxi from Sfakia. Which day of the week and did you have long to wait?
Stuart

As a matter of interest does anyone know why Greece has this quaint habit of not depositing the paper down the toilet? It seems to apply even to new builds. Does any other civilised country adopt it? Does it apply to luxury hotels and luxury homes?
I often meet people who say it is the reason they never go to Greece on holiday.

I don't think it's a quaint habit the greeks have adopted but a very poor plumbing system that can't cope with toilet roll.
Rowena
Yes the bore of the plumbing at the toilet is good but the bore of the pipe gets smaller as it passes outside hence the slightest little blockage soon backs up as a few of us know! I believe the Alianthos is flushable?Sounds feasible for the building itself but once the piping gets to the road it will be increasing in diameter all the way to the treatment works. So why aren't new buildings built with sufficiently wide pipes?
Barny.
Maybe it depends how far away from the treatment works you are? And the size of the pipe leading from your place?Quote from: BarnyYes the bore of the plumbing at the toilet is good but the bore of the pipe gets smaller as it passes outside hence the slightest little blockage soon backs up as a few of us know! Stuart
Stuart,
I assume you are joking about the Spring tide effect - there is no visible tide in the Libyan sea or the Aegean, let alone spring tides. It has more to do with the effect that the sea has on the beaches during the winter. Sometimes some beach is washed away and sometimes more is deposited. Red Beach near Matala is susceptible to this - I have seen pictures taken this year and there isn't much beach left. The worst one I have seen is Roukounas beach on the island of Anafi - whereas one year you could walk on the sand through some rocks from one beach to the next, the year after about 100 yards of beach had been swept away and you had to wade in water knee deep over a very stony bottom.
I did take a taxi from Chora Sfakion to Plakias. It was on a Thursday. There were no taxis around but I found a supermarket that has a taxi booking service. He couldn't find a local taxi, so he ordered one from Plakias and I had to wait about an hour. It was 50 euro. I was planning to take Zak's phone number with me, but forgot (Zak runs a taxi service in Plakias).
Greecemad
One other question.
Was the cash machine working in Sougia. When we arrived last year it had been put out of action until 2007.

Has anyone pictures of what the fountains look like after the "refurb" recently? This was taken in 2004:
No pics I'm afraid but we had a cooling iced coffee in the taverna above the Lion Fountain in June 2007 looking down on to the refurbed patio area. It is a stunning refurb and with the concealed lighting, I would think that an evening visit would be very special. We also bought a bell made by the monks of Meteora from the shop run by the English woman opposite the natural products shop (visit Spili and you will know which I mean!). We ALWAYS visit Spili and it is now a very smart stop off point on the way to fab beaches Ag Galini et al hot spots. How I miss Crete and still another 46 weeks until we return. After thinking about it a bit more, I don't think it's in the Lysseos.
Maybe it's not in a taverna, but in the washroom of a bar. If so, I know it's not Ostraco or the Plateia bar, so I'll now plump for the washrooms of the Nufaro Bar.

This isn't anywhere I've been, but I've done some detective work. It's the Empire Cafe at Lake Kournas. If you look at the board without logging in, you don't see the pictures but see the names of them: empire_cafe_1.jpg etc. I saw this a few days ago, but didn't think there would be an Empire Cafe on Crete so you had given them bogus names. However, if you search the net for Empire Cafe and Crete you get to Lake Kournas, and one of the entries is your previous post as follows, which mentions 'Sacred Spirit':
Lake Kournas
Northwest of Plakias, it’s easy to get to although there is one village that you have to go back on yourself and the turning is easily missed, so stay alert!
Drive through Kournas village and almost immediately you are on the road that surrounds the Lake. There is a bar called the Empire Café. Stop, have lunch and take in the atmosphere, it’s eerie. The bar is built on the side of the mountain so you get an unobstructed view all round the lake. There are eagles playing on the updrafts and the owner is into American Red Indians so tends to play ‘Sacred Spirit’ a lot, which adds to the atmosphere. There is a myth/local rumour that the lake has a monster (nessie II?) so I would not recommend the paddleboats that you can hire at the bottom of the hill.
Greecemad
i might be on my own on this, but we visited Kournas lake for the first time this september, admittedly not the empire cafe, we went to the lakeside and to be honest i thought it was like blackpool

2. Is cricket played in Greece?
Moral of the story: Women are clever. Don't mess with them!
Answer to 1. is No. 8. Initially numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are out. Changing ends at the end of the over means that no. 2 is next out, with no. 8 at the other end. No. 9 and 10 are then out, leaving no. 8. to return to the pavillion with a smug look on his face.

... Anyone know how to prevent a Cock or Cockeral crowing ?This came up on another forum I visit - the consensus was raisins soaked in rum although I suspect raki would do a better job

Barny (stuck in welsh wales)
start from lefkoyia and turn right by Stelios's taverna (signposted shinaria)
start walking up the hill the road forks just after the church and you take the left turn, past the old laundry (it has been tarted up a little) keep going up! you'll pass a church on your right and a barrel dog (he's quite a nice dog)
you will see a bulldozed road going off to left, you can take this road then almost immediately turn off it to the right and follow a rough path through the undergrowth
or a much simplier route, continue on the road you were originally on, until you see a sign for the Holy Cross (Timos Stavros) this starts you off on a rough bulldozed series of hairpins ( the path mentioned previously meets this half way up)
continue up until road peters out and take footpath up
follow path..... (up)
you'll know when you get there

Now I've read your posts again, if they are in the same village, then it can't be Plaka. Probably isn't Spinalonga either but that will have to be my next guess (final?? is not the same as final!)No, not Plaka or Spinalonga.
Kokino Horio. The road from Souda and Kalives. No, not Kokino Horio.

More clues please - would be a pity if it was a random guess that got the correct answerThis village is within 10 km. of Plakias.

Good comparison - clever the way the fish-eye manages to hide the umbrellas
Got to love your Fishy Eyes Chris
It's still very quiet. What has everyone been up to? Have you all had a good time in Plakias? Any stories to tell?
Barny.
Have you been hit with a rhythm stick? You could be entitled to compensation with a personal Ian Dury claim. |
