Title: Where do you sunbathe?
Post by: Ploppy on August 28, 2003, 11:36:18 AM
After the succes of Johns spending poll I thought I would try again after the dismal failure of my doughnut poll

I think most of us like to catch a bit of the sun whilst we are out there and go for a swim. Where do you prefer do it, as it were?

We tend to go somewhere in the middle of Plakias Bay for the simple reason that it is the closest spot to the Nikos Studios that we have stayed in, plus there isn't a long walk to Kyma for that after-beach beer

I wouldn't call your doughnut poll a failure!
It got 11 votes and certainly confirmed the popularity of Leftheris' wares.
I can't think of a beach vendor anywhere else who is as memorable.
He cracks me up every time with his 'Extra vitamina!'

Anyway, it's the far end for me as you can see from my signature.
Close to Palegremnos for lunch, sand dunes to roam, trees for shade, beds and brollies for hire, handy shower, rocky bits for snorkeling and you can get your kit off for sunbathing and swimming.  Delightful!  And no white bits!

Blimey, hadn't checked in a while. Thought I only had 2 votes! This reply notification jobby seems a bit tempremental.
Leftheris is certainly a character though i'm sure his quote that a doughnut a day keeps all the doctors away wouldn't get space in the Lancet!

John,
just a quickie, when you say the 'far end' are you talking Souda end ?
Cheers

No Neil.
By 'the far end' I mean the eastern end of Plakias bay, not far from Palegremnos taverna, number 18 on the Anso Travel map (http://www.compage.com/plakiasproperties.jpg).  Not far from the hill known as Koriki or Kakamouri which leads down to the Kakamouri headland.

Souda (or Sweetwater) is to the west of Plakias town and west of Skinos beach.
It's about 2km from town.
Near number 1 on the map.

Hope this helps.

Looks like the Far Enders have it 'in the bag' - the best sand and, as you say john, no white bits (hopefully not too many red bits though )

While Plakias beach is great and you can go nude there, you can end up being samdblasted a bit there when the wind gets up, so my favourite beach is Mikro Ammoudi (the small one which is the next one along the coast eastwards from Damnoni).  As the beach is very small pebbles it eliminates the sandpaper effect and being 99.9% naturist makes it a must if you want to get your togs off!

Couldn't agree more - the water there is clear and the waves are great fun.  Investing in an umbrella is a must unless you like the full sun and the water not so good if you don't like 'being out of your depth'. The walk is good exercise as well.

Like Hopper and Karen T I prefer the small beach east of Damnoni - and for the same reason as Karen. As Damnoni only got 2 votes one of us must have pt down further afield whilst we all meant the same place. And incidentally Karen the train which you do not like now runs a very good shuttle sevice to Damnoni which cuts out the long walk . Only problem is the doughnut man does not get there until very late in the day and usually as I am leaving . In the few days I spent on the  far end of the main beach though there seemed to be far more people nude than there has been on previous visits  but I think that is pot luck - the first few people to get there each day set the pattern there whereas on the beach east of Damnoni anyone wearing anything looks out of place and you do not get gawpers or people who walk along without realising there  is a naturist beach which happens a lot on the main beach at Plakias

I'd have to disagree with you there Roger. We go to both beaches and have found them equally ok re gawpers. ie. not a problem. Also, the Far End is definitely naturist but naturally, textiles are free to park themselves there as well. I wouldn't say that the first few people there set the pattern. Of course our experience has been in early September - maybe it's different out of season.

For the purposes of this poll, is Mikro Ammoudi part of Damoni or is it 'Further afield'? Or could it have its own entry added?

As Graham and Karen said the Far End is certainly naturist.

We have been in and out season and to our knowledge it has been so for years.

As for "textiles": my husband is not but I am...

For me this is a question of choice while respecting the choice of people wanting to swim and sun in the nude.

On the other hand I can say that in the past I have had a few bad experiences (when it is less crowdy) of "nudist gawpers" or whatever you call this kind of men who, when seeing a woman alone on the beach (husband swimming), try to sneak up to you.

This kind of behaviour is very annoying !

My wife and I love Plakias but one big drawback is the distance from the airport. The last time we visited we arrived on a night flight then faced a nighmare journey by coach and taxi to Plakias. The taxi driver must have been an ex-Kamakazi pilot as he spent most of the time on the wrong side of the road!!!

The big attraction for us is the naturist part of the beach as we always plan our holidays where we can enjoy the beach in the buff. Is it my imagination but is the naturist section getting smaller? We must fight for our rights.

Yes, defininitely your imagination.

We are creeping towards the textiles at the rate of around 2 sunbeds a year

Whilst we have been fortunate to enjoy such a well serviced naturist beach for many years I doubt whether this gives us any rights. However if you fancy a fight there please post the time and venue and we can organise a team of supporters ... not to mention a posse of photographers

I think the real problem is just that there are more of us now. The beds were noticeably closer together this year. Indeed a little too intimate some days

See you!

it's the closeness of people that put us off micro amoudi, i really don't like turning over on my towel to find i'm staring up someones ....... :'(

if we're feeling lazy we head for the dunes at the far end, but you're more likely to find us at shinaria

have to admit to being a pool person myself, nearly always being there in july i have seen wind like i haven't seen before ( could be like that all year not sure???) i have seen personal belongings blowing down the street and empty sun loungers end up in the pool, and the thought of the beach brings the words ouch! and sand paper to mind  ................talking of the weather did anyone see the picture of plakias xmas 2003 covered in snow.  they were amazing, white and deserted and still very recognisable but very unbelievable at the same time????

Uli,

I like your photograph. I must never have stood in that position as I have never noticed the shape of a face on the rock on the right hand side. Somehow you make the beach look bigger than it is.

Things have changed a lot since Sep 2003 - or maybe it's just the difference between July and September?

anyway two weeks ago it was nowhere near 99.9%, I wasn't counting but it may not have been much more than 50 - 60%.  But encouragingly, this included a fair few Greeks whose attitude to all-over tanning seems to have changed dramatically since my last visit in the 90s (also evident at Plakias far end and Sougia).

I think this depends on the season. In June it was certainly 90%+. The same at the eastern end of Sougia (the bit beyond where you have to step in the sea a bit) - that was over the Greek Pentecost weekend. Having seen other clothing-optional beaches in Greece I think you see a lot more costumes in high season than you do in June and September.

I have also seen Mikro Ammoudhi change from day to day. At weekends (particularly Sunday) you get a lot of locals coming and although some of them bare all the majority do not, probably because they come in large extended-family groups.

Noticed in June this year that there were more naturist couples expanding (in the nicest possible sense) towards Plakias into the next section of sunbeds.

Also discovered the easten end of Souda which was OK when the sand blasting at the far end and micro amoudi was too unpleasant. A little oasis of calm!

I'm just as surprised! During our visits early september, the naturist section has stretched past the gap in the sand dunes just past (towards the far end) the Paligremnos. If August is predominantly textiles, I'm glad we visit a few weeks later. Just sad that this year we won't be there  .

Just coming to the end of a 2-week stay, all of it spent at the far end.  There are textiles there, but not exclusively.  The proportion to clothes-optional is probably about 50/50.  The place is also not just full of Greeks though they are there, of course.  Other nationalities appear to be mainly Germans and Brits.  Hope this helps.

I am often in Plakias in the latter part of august and the first few days in september . I spend most days at Mikros Amoudhi but usually the first  day = having travelled overnight so not wanting to go far - at the far end and occasionally the odd day there later on . I have found a considerable difference in the short time i am there in both the naturist textile balance at the far end and in how far along the beach it is possible to bare all = in both cases better for naturism later on . no such difference notable at mikros Amoudhi = that is always 80 % + naturist

In the hope of stopping this odd glitch, I thought I'd try a quick reply to see if it makes things work properly.  We'll see ....

I don't understand that, why? when there is a perfectly good clean beach with facilities, in Plakias, either Far End or otherwise, some people still prefer to travel long distances to more secluded beaches with little or no ameanities.

Let's have some good reasons why these places are chosen as an alternative to probably (in my opinion) the best beach (Far End) for miles.

Micro Amoudi offers good snorkeling around the many surrounding rocks. The sandy bottom beyond the Micro Amoudi beach is usually clear of any grassy debris and the water deepens quickly.

I manage to get a few pictures of the fish among the beautiful rocky walls that cup Micro Amoudi.

The Far End is our favourite most of the time but there have been one or two days  when you'd get sand blasted trying to sunbathe there. The sand at Mikro Amoudi is a bit heavier and more sheltered. Also, I think most people have some other reasons for trying other places - we enjoy the walk between Plakias and Mikro Amoudi (apart from trapsing through Hapimag) and I like it when the waves get up at Mikro Amoudi.

George,

I go to both beaches, but I much prefer Mikro Ammoudhi to the Far End. Some of the reasons are as follows:

1. I don't mind the walk, and it gets rids of a few calories that have been collected in the tavernas and bars.
2. When the sand is hot I like to run down the beach straight into the sea and then swim. You can't do that at the Far End because of the drop by the sea, stones as you go into the sea and it's too shallow to swim.
3. On a windy day, Mikro Ammoudi is more sheltered and you don't get sandblasted.
4. I like to look around and see what's going on. If you lie on a mat in the middle of Mikro Ammoudhi, you can see a lot of people, and people walking around the path at the top. There's isn't the same opportunity at the Far End as you can't lie in front of the sunbeds and nowhere can you see as much.
5. One rock beach is next door, for a change of scenery.

we're quite happy to do the extra time to get to Ligres (40 minutes in a jeep), mainly because we love the empty beach and we like being on our own

i've not been on micro amoudi for a long time, i really don't like being that close to other people, we're quite happy to get down to the far end when we can't be bothered with the drive or we've been walking in the morning

As a first timer in Plakias, it took a week to pluck up the courage to go to the far end - after that, we never looked back! Best bit of the beach and no white bits. We were there in august and I would say that the vast majority of people were nude.

Hi Icarus

Nice to see you plucked up the courage, that's all it takes, and how did you feel at the end of the day without all those ugly white bits and a 'red' bum.
I bet you found somewhere with really comfy chairs that evening

Well I couldn't have put it better myself!  Mind you it was busy in May.  Chris and I went off to Ligres and no fighting for a spot there.  I think we have just 14 more working get ups and then we are off!  Hope the sun shines for the whole two weeks after the dismal weather we have endured.  I feel very fortunate to be going out there.

Thanks for posting that Mandy.
I was just going to say that I agree with that too and then I noticed that it was me who had written it in the first place!
Talk about having a senior moment!

We came back on the same day as you and Chris.
Beats me how we managed to avoid bumping into you for the entire duration of our stay.

We saw Leftheris once and exchanged a few words.
He mentioned "smoking problems".

His stand-in hasn't quite got the patter right as yet.
Two notable omissions:
"Greek Viagra".
"A doughnut a day keeps all the doctors away".

After a rapid review of my short-term memory I can definitly state that I almost remember that incident.
I can certainly remember looking back at Joe's place and wondering why that couple sitting outside were watching us.

Sorry Chris and Mandy!
I can only attempt to blame it on yet another senior moment.

I'm sure it wouldn't have been anything to do with the fact that we had been at the Saint Jerome's day celebrations at the library from 11:30 (drinking Ali & Dave's 'Very Expensive Wine') immediately followed by a long and arduous library committee meeting at Joe's until (help me out Chris!) whatever time it was we left.

Just so you know Leftheris's stand in is his brother but he refuses to do the patter!

Nice to see you back after a long absence George. Your being away just magnified the normal winter dearth of postings.
