Considering the news this morning, I wish everyone who is travelling out from now on the best of luck!

It's going to feel a bit odd walking round the airport without a bag!

More info on the BBC News page.

Check out the links Laura, all the info you'll need is there.
It's been on the news since 5.30 this morning

Might be a good time to become a 'Far Ender', then you won't need any luggage

IMHO It's for the best!

here is the full version

Following this morning's police action, security at all UK airports has been increased and additional security measures have been put in place for all flights.

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

    * pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
    * travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
    * prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
    * spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
    * contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
    * for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
    * female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
    * tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
    * keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

There are no changes to current hold baggage security measures.

Regrettably, significant delays at airports are inevitable. Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year. But they are necessary and will continue to keep flights from UK airports properly secure. We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the Government, will need to be in place for a limited period only. In light of the threat to aviation and the need to respond to it, we are asking the travelling public to be patient and understanding and to cooperate fully with airport security staff and the police.

If passengers have any questions on their travel arrangements or security in place at airports they should contact their airline or carrier.

Hi people!
Don't worry! All this caos is probably due to high level alert for these days, but will go down next days... (I hope for you!). I think that for the end of August, there will be no problems at all for the flights TO CRETE.
In fact, the alert occours mainly only for the flights to the USA.

In view of todays trouble we have been reminded by our friend that when she went to Bulgaria in May they decided to put camcorder in the hold luggage. On arrival at hotel they found the camcorder have been taken from the case.In view of this she said if you can get your case shrink wrapped it will hopefully deter baggage handlers.

Unfortunately, they could not claim from the airline, home insurance or travel insurance, so they lost £1,000

One for Harribobs maybe ?

What happens now with the luggage allowance, one was allowed 5 kg for in flight luggage and 20 kg for the cargo hold, will we now be allowed 25 kg in the hold ?

we've had no instructions yet, as you can imagine yesterday was a bit hairy

i imagine that you'll be allowed the extra but.......

as for shrink-wrapping your luggage, i can see the advantage but it marks your case out from the rest without giving any real extra security, you can buy pacsafe covers which are steel mesh, but again it marks out your bag

i, for one, will be certainly be changing my travel insurance so my camera is covered for traveling in the hold

as usual......   we are being told nothing more than you can read in the papers

so to summarise, the alert status is being downgraded and airports will be allowing one item of hand luggage by tomorrow ( some airports today)

from the BBC site

For those allowed to take hand luggage on board, the dimensions of this item must not exceed a maximum length of 45cm, width of 35cm and depth of 16cm (17.7"x13.7"x6.2" approx) including wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.

Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items carried by passengers will be screened by X-ray.

No liquids of any type are permitted through the airport security search point, other than the following items:

    * Prescription medicines in liquid form sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), as long as verified as authentic.

    * Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted by the accompanying passenger).

The definition of liquids includes gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, eg toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols etc.

interesting bit in there that i'd missed

"All laptops and large electrical items (e.g. large hairdryer) must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray so that such items neither obscure nor are obscured by the bag."

that's put my mind at rest somewhat, if you can take a laptop, you'll be able to take a camera
