there are certain times when you really need that beer, coming off the beach on a hot day, at the end of hard days walking (or in the middle)

so which one do you go for?

another dilemma: which first after a day at the beach, cold beer or shower?

of course if there's a fridge in your accommodation you can do both at once

We cannot wait that long!
To end a beach day:
A last dive in the sea, a cold shower on the beach, a cold draught Mythos in the beachbar and watch the sundown makes our day.

It is not me on the picture (In case anyone objects I will remove it)

We found an interesting article (with Plakias and Myrthos in it) about Greek beers.
We are going to try them out any way  next time in Greece as we go for local drinks and dishes anyhow.

The Souvlakia House (The Hut) sells "black" beer from the Rethymnon brewery. See here.
Very good but much more expensive than Mythos and not so suitable to the ambience/climate of Plakias in my opinion. However at home I would never drink the Mythos/Amstel type of beers. You can't beat real ale, can you?

It is all a matter of personal taste I found a beer forum with 24950 different beers reviewed. I suppose there are good and bad ales as well. I do not think I am going to sample all of them. My personal experience local drinks taste better in their own local ambience. In the UK I prefer to drink UK draught beers. Etc.

Beer.  AAH- a most satisfying drink.

The pic in this tread is great, it makes me thirsty, and makes me dream . . . But it features a level horizon that only can be achieved by supporting the camera on the bar   (my experience)

In Greece I drink Amstel. Since it's brewed in Greece I consider it a local beer. Am I wrong? When I travel I always try out the local stuff, and normally I find something I like.

I knew this thread would be a good idea, already i have got two new brews to seek out next year

The black beer sounds very interesting, (an IPA style  mmmm,) as do the Craft Brewery beers

Thomas, I don't know the answer to your question, Stella Artois is now brewed in the UK but isn't a shadow of the original, i suppose it's Greek beer, where does Amstel come from originally?

Amstel is originating from Amsterdam
A city at a dike (dam) in Holland alongside a small river the Amstel.
Heineken is originating from Amsterdam as well.

Hello Chris,

I'm surprised you didn't try it in May this year. I know you went to the Souvlakia House as you wrote a review (one of the "few"). Maybe the Medousa's raki was more appealing! The "black" beer isn't black like Guinness but, as I say, brown like a bottled IPA (remember John Courage in the 60s/70s, or are you too young?). The black beer really stands out in Greece where almost all the beers are what we would call lagers at home.

I agree that local beers and foods are best in Greece (and anywhere I guess). e.g taramosalata, Mythos/Amstel.

Although I voted for Mythos I would be pushed to tell the difference between it and Amstel.  Could you distinguish them? Both are brewed in Greece I think.

There used to be other Greek beers like Fix and Henniger that I never see now.
