Fantastic pics John,
we "TRIED" to do it several years ago, got 2/3 of the way up when we saw in the distance a huge pick-up truck towing a broken down bus atempting to come round the bend towards us, bearing the fact that we were on the OUTSIDE edge and there was NO WAY I was going to move further over I decided to do a "12" point turn and get the hell out of there.
When we got down to Frangokastello we stoped at the big taverna by the fort  we got out with Zell soaking wet with sweat and totaly speechless, 1 of the waiters came over to us and asked if she was OK all she could do was to point to the mountain road, his reply was "oh dear", told us to sit down and fetched her the biggest glass of Mataxa I have ever seen, after anouther 2 she finaly calmed down enough for us to make our way back to Plakias, that in itself bad enough.
Needless to say we have neve been past Mirthios ever since

We are 2 retired ladies, maybe old but still like a bit of life, we have been to Greece numerous times and many times to Crete but this is our first vist to Plakias.   We are going to Plakias for 2 weeks at the beginning of October and we would like some recommendations of where to eat.  We like local type places which are frequented by the locals.  We are not impressed by white linen etc. but do like good food and drink and some  'kefi'  any suggestions welcome.

One of the best places to eat in the town is MEDUESA it is situated on the back road that runs paralel with the main road. From the main road, Go down the road where the Doctors & Chemist is and turn right at the end walk along the street past a restaurant on an open terrace. You will shortly come to a tree lined garden and you will probably see Babis the owner cooking and preparing food on his open air bar b que that is Medusas.

Are we sure about the above. Medousa - with Babis serving but NOT cooking IS the  - quote - first "restaurant on an open terrace" and immediately adjacent to Medousa is the next taverna  - Manoussos - which has the bar B que etc. Last year I think there were some severe doubts expressed about Manoussos ??? (no doubts expressed about Medusa and Babis though).

For photo of Medousa taverna see harribobs photo below

Without a doubt Medousa is definately THE place to eat (always ask what the days special is, they are fab)
Made the mistake of "trying"  Manoussos a while back, NEVER again, asked for the Chicken, guess what? thats All I got, 1 piece of overcooked, dry chicken, when I asked where the rest of the meal was I was told that was all I asked for so thats what I got. NEVER again, you have been warned.

OH NO!  I'm going to have to hide this news from John or he won't get on the plane!   John and Zell - I wonder if by any chance you are on the same flight as us next Tuesday - 10.15 from Gatwick to Chania?  We've always flown to Heraklion before so looking forward to seeing some new sights on the journey to Plakiaa.
Alison

Just had an Email from freinds living in Plakias an they inform me that the temperature at the moment is 37-38C IN THE SHADE and due to get to 43-44C by Sat/Sun
(can't wait till we go on Tuesday) I suppose I will have to stay in the shade at the Lamon and try to keep cool with a cold Mythos (gosh life's a bitch isn't it?)

Not wishing to stir up a honets nest but being disabled myself I can definitly say that disabled persons are not allowed in the exit seats for safety reasons, in the event of an emergency people sitting in these seats are expected to open these doors, and I do know that they are in fact given instructions in doing so.
Whilst I can see the reasoning behind it, when there are 6 (3 either side) seats available it does seem hard that maybe 1 or 2 of them cannot be made available to disabled persons, after all it only takes 1 person on either side of the aile to open the doors.
It seems to me that it's a case of women, children and able bodied first and let the disabled make their own way after everyone else has got off safely.
