Not sure about the pestilence or plague but wind definitely (and that's not just due to the change of diet) and definitely earthquakes....although 83 in a day seems a bit extreme !
We've sat through one (4.7 on the Richter scale) in the Ostraca bar and, last year, woke up to a 5.7 where the epicentre was just under Gavdos Island.....so if you see things rocking or shaking it's not just the after effects of the raki. It is a bit of an odd sensation (if you do pick up on it) but most of the locals barely notice....they're used to it. Made a couple of my geology friends very jealous !

Souda is lovely....I can heartily recommend it...and it's usually quieter than the other beaches.

Whatever happened to good communication ?.....I pestered our very friendly travel agents yesterday and even they had problems finding out who was flying from where and with whom. They rang Olympic for me and were told that our flights on the 17th Sept at 21.50 remained unchanged...except that the carrier would be Small Planet. Cant wait for the tickets to arrive to confirm this. The agents have now suggested (as they weren't happy about the fact that they hadn't been told either) that we check right up to the day before departure just in case. Six hours either way makes a huge difference if you are booking advanced rail tickets that can only be used on certain services.....either that or the wait at the airport is long and tedious....and that's before you ever get to Crete ! Will keep you up to date if anything changes.

Don't worry...I am used to pestering both Thomas Cook (they know me by my first name) and Olympic (and yes, they do change details once you are on holiday...and expect the reps to be able to find you and advise you !). Will definitely be checking and wont be at all surprised if things have changed ! Wonder if Anne Robinson and the Producers of Watchdog have as much trouble with their holiday bookings ?

Plakias / Re: Rain

Fear Not.......even if it rains it's usually very warm rain ! We sat through two downpours in 2011 and one amazing four way electrical storm with accompanying monsoon last year. Everything dries out very quickly...so hope the transport is OK. The scent of the island afterwards is amazing ! Not what you'd usually expect but yet another face of a beautiful island.

Interesting thread. We've booked from Gatwick with Olympic (arriving early 18th Sept and booked in January). I checked today and as far as we know we're still flying with Strategic and a transfer is included. It seems that the transfer problem only comes up if you're booked to fly from certain airports. Perhaps this is something Olympic should be considering as the service doesn't seem to be consistent but I bet the prices don't change ! If anything does change (and it has in the past) we get a letter but, because of a 'little problem' a couple of years ago with our agent I now check the day before we travel just in case someone has changed their mind and not bothered to tell us !

Hi, Hope you really enjoy your holiday. We took a rep to task a few years ago as they were suggesting that the tavern owners were bribing people to eat...it was absolute rubbish. I have been a regular to Plakias since 1987 and not one person has 'bribed' me to eat at their tavern.....although lots have invited me to share a drink out of sheer friendship and good hospitality. I'd go back tomorrow.....and will be doing so in September ! Have a great time.

Hi, I agree. Why lose Plakias too ?.......you can always try new places to eat and rink and make new friends. I first went to Plakias with someone who let me down very badly ...but have been going back since and never regretting it. Go and enjoy.

Hi, We visit Plakias every Sept and have spent many long, lazy hours as guests of Stellios and 'Mama' at the Aponema. OK it is slightly out of the main village (all of 400 m or so) but it is worth it. The food is lovely and the welcome is always warm and friendly. We just sit with a Mythos ...or Amstel.....or whatever...and watch the horizon over the bay...bliss...cant wait 'til Sept !
