« on: November 12, 2017, 07:38:42 AM »
Came back for the 4th time this year - still tee shirt weather - 4 or 5 people at the  far end , a dozen at Amoudaki - water still in the 20s so swimming a couple of times every day - everything very laid back - olives about to be picked - things could be worse.

A few articles on some recent significant archeological finds (stone tools including hand axes) variously described as being located in Plakias / Preveli

In passing there's a rather good book that relates these hand axes to the evolution of the mind - As We Know It , coming to terms with an evolved mind by Marek Kohn,

Plakias / News from the front
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:56:08 PM »
At the risk of being lynched - I understand that there may  have been a flake or two of snow back in the UK.
We are now just into our 9th (and unfortunately last) week here in Plakias.
We've been out walking and swimming on all but about half a dozen days. Yesterday we went up Timeos Stavros (OK we started 1/2 way up - at the first church) then back to Plakias for a dip - and today we walked to Amoudaki and had a swim there.
Its very strange walking and swimming and wearing T shirt and shorts at the end on November - and it's the fist time we'e spent a prolonged period here. Also except for a few odd bods like us there are only the locals and permanent ex-pats here so the atmosphere is very different to that which we normally experience.
Sadly, reality will hit home next week when having left London after 45 years we have our first Winter in our new place on the Sussex Downs.

PlakChat / First dip
« on: February 18, 2009, 10:40:36 AM »
Well - we're just back from first visit this year - missed all the snow in the UK

Got to P early Sat Jan 31 and had first dip at far end in the afternoon. If there are any cryo physicists reading this I can recommend the sea for your experiments – I reckon it was about minus 272 C.

Not much competition for the umbrellas and beds since 1) there were no beds and 2) there were no other people. Anyway we managed a dip (just) in January. Had more swims over the next  days but for the last few days it was too stormy.

Did the Mill walk to Myrthios most days except 2 days when we walked up to Spili and another day when we did the Timeos Stavros ?? walk (Ok - just the top bit from the first church – but that’s the interesting bit.). There was one entry in the book before ours (Feb 4 (a couple from Belgium) – we were Feb 8).

Most bars and caffs shut of course – Xechorista ?? open (I think Georgia and Adonis keep it open 11 months of the year) and Niko (fish n chips) opened for one evening  – all 3 main supermarkets open.

All in all it was shorts and teeshirt weather (for me anyway – the locals were in Arctic gear) – quite a bit of sun – some light wind – some rain (when it rained it was A-level) – good break – back there soon.

Where to stay / Where to stay in winter
« on: January 28, 2009, 09:49:46 AM »
We're going over on Friday (probably) for 2 weeks. And even though our villa is nearly finished its still not habitable. That's partly why we're going - also of course for a holiday.
So - has anyone got any recommendations as to where to stay this time of the year?

PlakChat / Buying furniture
« on: October 28, 2008, 10:15:28 AM »
Hope this is not too off-topic. A question for you residents.

We will need to buy furniture soon. As a reference I compared the prices of Ikea in the UK and in Athens. Athens came out 30/40/50% higher so it would make sense to buy in the UK and drive/ship it out.

So my topic is - is my analysis right - and is the Ikea markup the same in other shops . regular furniture shops in Heraklion for instance.

Thanks

Holiday Companies / Who does the hols there now
« on: September 03, 2008, 03:53:46 PM »
Well its the longest we've spent away from P - haven't  been there for a year now. So I did the usual browse for flights / hols for mid Sept but seems like there are no packages advertised (except at the Kalypso).
Now we rarely take holiday packages - just get the flight and arrange rooms when we get there but at odd times we've seen (and taken) packages that are comparable in price to flight only.
So have all the package companies pulled out now - is everyone going DIY.
We're based in London.

Gossip / Top 20 holiday property destinations
« on: May 12, 2005, 05:45:21 PM »
Hope this is not too off topic

Some months ago there was a prog on tele about the top 20 holiday property destinations. There WAS a certain amount of "this place has tripled in value in 3 weeks" etc.

The list (in order) was as follows The Algarve, Cape Town, Turkey, Slovenia, Limousin, Bulgaria, Teruel, Croatia, Cyprus,, Normandy, Barcelona, Cape Verde, Tuscany, Costa del Sol, Down Under, ,Florida, Marrakech, St Kitts and Nevis, French Riviera, Dubai

So more than 1/2 skirted the Med - France Spain, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Cyprus, North Africa but significantly no Greece or Greek islands (is it PC to exclude Cyprus?).

You may say "thank goodness for that" but it got me wondering - whyever not ? - am I missing something ?

Any ideas ?
