Gossip / Naturist Beaches

In previous years we have often seen people in the front row of umbrellas swaped by a large wave. Maybe that influenced their decision to move the umbrellas back.

On one day the sea was so rough that the first row was under water and the waves touched the bed that I was using on the second row!! comments were made by people on the left of the beach (as you face the sea) on the lack of space compared to other years.

indeed it was Sept last year, and as chas says, it was for illustration purposes!

Early this June there was still four rows but the number is unbrellas in each row had increased, it made the beach feel very crowded and hemmed in. By doing this they have restricted the area that is used by people who just turn up and used thier own umberllas, towls or mats, really unfair. Though the beach was 99% naturist except for Sundays when it would drop to 70%.

Plakias / New Development
« on: June 19, 2007, 10:26:50 PM »
Just returned from Plakias, I noticed further construction is going on around the area. One new building on the left as you drop down the hill into the village, before the church. Purpose unknown.
The one day I noticed a prepaired area opposite the bakery, in front of the Alianthos. A couple of days later a small porta cabin arrived and signs were fitted, although over three or four days I did not notice any selling staff whilst I was there, just electicains fitting out the cabin.
The cabin is promotomg a new development by Gasparakis Constrution. See www.gasparakisconstructions.com
This seems to be a development of thirteen houses out side Lefkogia, looking towards Plakias. So Plakias Panorarma was just the begining it seems!!

Plakias / Timbaki container port
« on: October 07, 2006, 09:35:04 AM »
I have read recently on the Skifia forum of a subject that was originally raised on our forum in January by Shinaria, then followed up by Beachcombers, Leen and others.

I have looked further on the net to confirm the story and took the following cutting from the "Athens News"
"China Shipping wants as well to develop an international port and base in south Crete which would be able to accommodate mammoth ships of 8,500-container capacity with large feeder ships of 4,500-container capacity using the facility to serve North Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe".
So the story does seem to stand up.

Whilst on the beach at Amoudi in May we were very surprised to see a very large container ship pass by only a few miles off shore. Was this a trial run to test the practicalities and feasibilities of such a large ship in the coastal waters ?
It was certainly a glimpse of the future!!

Whilst this subject is not really of concern to us as visitors to Crete, it is not our business; it is an isssue that only concerns the local people, after all it is "their" country, they have to decide what is best for them.
As lovers of Greece and Crete in particular, the construction of this container port will have far reaching consequences for the southern Crete region. None of which I feel would be good.  As visitors we shall just vote with our feet.  The recent new development outside Plaskias, a new hotel here, a container port there... the region will never be the same. It's a place I love and care about as much as our leafy lanes of England.

However, I am surprised that the subject raised recently by Janm and earlier in the year by Shinaria has not promoted more discussion..... It's now autumn, we are all just returned from Plak, the quiet season is over... Over to you folks, are you concerned??

Although speaking personally I do hope that a majority of Cretans will stop these plans!
If you wish to voice a protest please look at the following.

Where to go / Gavdos Island
« on: August 21, 2006, 08:19:37 PM »
I understand that it is not possible to take a car to the island, the ferries from Plakias and Hora Skafion are both too small; for foot passengers only.

Where to go / Gavdos Island

A boat leaves Chora Sfakion at 10.30 and arrives Gavdos at 11.45. The journey is on Thursday, Friday,  Saturday and Sunday until 31 August; Then Friday, Saturday, Sunday untill 20 Sept; Then only Saturday and Sunday.
The return journey back to Chora Sfakion leaves Gavdos at 17.00 each day. So there is a shorter journey time... the only trouble is it would take about and hour and a half to drive from Plakias to Chora SfaKion!!

On a different theme... I note where you live; I am planing a trip to Venice next spring as a surprise wedding anniversary for my wife. Could you recommend a few good eating places? Not the touristy ones or any that are expensive, just the places were Venetians go for a meal, perhaps run by local family members.
Thanks for any advise that you could pass on.

Holiday Companies / Olympic Holidays
« on: August 01, 2006, 09:40:43 PM »
Roger, I hope that you have a better experience with Olympic than we did last year. First we were not informed of the three hour plus transfer. then when we arrived we were told our room number at Kostas-Chrysoulla Studios, we were then left alone... the rep scarpered.
Upon opening the bedroom door with the key we were given.. we found another couple inside!!  I won't go into the following details of the long and sorry tale. We made an official complaint via Morven at the time and a few hours were spent filling in forms with her. Upon return to the UK we wrote a two page long letter to Olyimpic detailing the faults and problems of the holiday. The result ? ..... nothing... just a letter from them denying any responsability. We could not put ourselves through the hassle of pursuing the case further.
This year we made all of the arrangements ourselves, saved some money and had a flawless holiday... good luck with Olympic... we shall not use them again. Customer service is not their speciality.

« on: July 25, 2006, 07:00:37 PM »
Jane, Try Medousa Taverna. They do rooms as well as excellent food, we stayed there in May and it was brilliant, friendly welcome, spotlessly clean. Tel: 0030 28320 31521, ask for Babis.
It's the same number for a fax too. However, they do not have a website.

Plakias / Web-Cam... The Future?
« on: July 15, 2006, 07:14:16 AM »
Folks
The Sfakian's have started up a new web-cam in Hania. See www.webcam-chania-crete.com
Great picture's.. live too. Well done to them.
Isn't it time we had our own web-cam in Plakias? We could have a daily fix of our wonderful village. Watch the weather, it's amazeing how a beach changes character during the winter. Even watch our friends poseing.
The Sfakian's have had over 2,500,000 hits on thier web-cam!
Were would it be fitted?.. What view would it show?.. How do we go about it? Could we sell the advertising to local traders?
My vote for location is around the harbour area showing the harbour, front and in the distance the far end.
Any thoughts and comments?
