Where to stay / Re: Good hotels?
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:01:28 PM »
Most apartments come with small kitchen facilities (enough to prepare breakfast).  However, we have had breakfasts in the Livicon and in Ostraco and were very happy with the breakfast choices, the quality and the prices.  And they both have beautiful views.

Plakias / Re: Tasomanolis

Tasomanolis is also one of our favorites, but as you say it is more expensive than most of the other restaurants.  But worth every euro.

Where to eat...or not! / Sirocco Restaurant
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:56:01 PM »
Last year, the Sirocco restaurant in Plakias was taken over by a new owner.  Fanis is married to Anna's daughter Eri (from Annaview apartments in Mirthios).  Together with his brother and his sister-in-law, he is running this restaurant.  They have modernized the place and are putting lots of effort in the decoration, the quality of the food and the service.  It also attracts a fair number of Greek people (one more reason to try it, according to us).  We have eaten there a fair number of times and have never been disappointed and the bill was always at the low side.  The sunset over the Souda mountains is really wonderful.

Where to go / Re: Mirthios/Myrthios Tavernas
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:16:07 PM »
Being a regular to Myrthios for the last 8 years, I think all four restaurants are very good.
Vrisi is according to us very nicely decorated for a Greek restaurant.  The food is very good, but we found the service not very good (were there 3 weeks ago).  Freddy was a very good waiter, but unfortunately has left Plakias and his replacement is not very organized.
We loved Dionyssos up until it was modernized and the cook was replaced.  We feel that it has lost a lot of its character, but the food is still very acceptable.
Our preference this year went to Plateia, both for the food and the service.  Panorama has live music one evening a week (forgot the day, but they announce it at the outside), which makes it very popular on that particular evening.
You cannot go wrong in any of the 4 restaurants and prices are very reasonable.

Gossip / Re: Freddie & Emma

That is sad news for many of us. We will miss them. We hope they and their son Lewis are doing well in the UK. Hope to see them again in Plakias in the coming years.

Does anyone know how Freddy and Emma and their son Lewis are doing?  Is Emma back at the Livicon? And where can we find Freddy this season?

Thank you for the update.  We are leaving in 2 weeks, staying in Myrthios, but heading down to Plakias for the beach, the shops, the cafés and the restaurants.  Really looking forward to it.  Where exactly are the two restaurants located that you are mentioning in your post?  Thanks.  Hugo

Where to go / Re: Plakias to Sweetwater Beach ?
« on: April 04, 2013, 09:58:18 AM »
You can find the ferry timetable here http://www.anendyk.gr/pages/en/timetable.php?lang=EN
We drove to Sfakia last October.  It will take you about an hour.  From Loutro you can take a small boat to Sweetwater Beach, but it only runs once or twice in the morning and once or twice in the afternoon back to Loutro.  Of course, you can walk from either Loutro or Sfakia.  Goog luck!

PlakChat / Re: Car rental at Heraklion Airport

Hi Tony,

We have used The Best Car Rentals for the last 3 years and have had very good service from them.  Websites are www.car-hire-crete.com or www.thebestcars.gr.  In the past, we also used Just Rental Center (www.justrentals.gr/) and were equally pleased.  It is worth comparing prices with both companies.  Enjoy your week in Crete!

Where to go / Re: Live Bouzuki

Hello,
Panorama taverna has a Greek music night every week (I think on Thursdays, but I am not sure).  It is announced at the outside of the taverna.  It is usually very popular, so you need to come early in the evening or try to make reservations.

Is flying with Ryanair a possibility for you?  They often have better prices.  They fly into Chania and it is at equal distance to Plakias as Heraklion.  We used them last October to fly back to Belgium and cannot complain about their services, nor about Chania airport.
Good luck!

Where to stay / Re: Long term rentals
« on: January 26, 2013, 01:23:03 PM »
We always stay in Myrthios at Annaview (http://www.annaview.com/) or Chrisanthi apartments
(http://chrisanthi-mirthios.com/en.html).  They both have heating in all their apartments and do also rent during the winter.  I am sure they will make special prices for long stays.  Good luck!

Plakias / Re: Plakias Late May
« on: January 10, 2013, 01:21:42 PM »
Hello,

We have been to Plakias and the South of Crete a few times at the end of May.  It is a very good period.
1) Most of the flowers will still be blooming.
2) It is going to be more than 30 degrees during the daytime.  You might need a sweater at night and maybe a raincoat for a couple of hours.
3) All the tavernas and shops are open at this time of the year.
In fact, this is the period of the year that we prefer.  It is not too hot and the days are long and sunny.
Have fun,

Hugo

We will be in Myrthios for one week from May 22-29 staying at Chrisanthi apartments, but will be down in Plakias every day for shopping, beach, coffee at the Livicon and dinner.  Looking forward to it.  Afterwards, we will stay another week in Kamilari near Matala.  We always split our time between both villages and sometimes add a couple of days in Paleochora or in Agia Paraskevi.  The Greek people are waiting for us and we can't wait to be back.

Holiday Companies / Cheap flights from Belgium
« on: November 06, 2012, 05:26:56 PM »
For the few forum members living in Belgium or close-by, Jetair is making good promotions on flights to Heraklion for next year (http://www.jetairfly.com/).  We just booked for the period May 22- June 5 for 144 euro per person, including all costs and with a 20 kg bagage weight allowance.  Can't wait.
