Where to go / Advice on day trips

We have found the Sunflower Landscapes of Western Crete a good guide for walks further afield.  Last year we drove up to the top of Samaria Gorge and did a couple of walks into the mountains, one up to the Kallergi refuge, mostly on a gravel track and on another occasion half way up Mount Gingilos. We did not do this but it is probably best to stop overnight at Omalos where there is a hotel or rooms. Both of these walks you have to retrace your steps but there are some circular walks in the book.  Can also recommend the Lance Chilton books for walks around Plakias (already mentioned on this website i think)  A good walk is from Sellia to Finikas Monastery and down to Souda Bay.  We started the walk in the morning, arriving at Souda Bay in time for lunch and a relaxing afternoon on the beach

We have driven to Elafonisi from Plakias and back in a day.  It took about 3 hours to get there going north and along the national highway past Chania and Kisamos and then along the coast road (spectacular views).  Did not get to Paleochora but took the road inland through Topolia coming back, lovely scenery and good views of Topolia Gorge.   A long day but well worth it.

Sounds like a bargain Dotty.  We've booked with Olympic this year for 2 weeks in May at Costa Chrysoulla and are paying £630!  - the reason being Olympic were doing a flight returning to Bristol on the Friday evening instead of Sat. 5am, but now they have changed the flight to return on Saturday morning.  We'll have to look at First Choice next time

PlakChat / Early Bird?

Hello

Have just joined this bulletin board.  We will be going to Plakias on 7 May this year for 2 weeks.  Have not been in April, but have been going to Greece for several years in May and have always had good weather - maybe a little rain on one or two days but mostly hot and sunny. We were in Plakias 2nd and 3rd week of May last year and it was really hot for early season, in the 90s, and warm enough to sit outside in the evenings but we were plagued by mozzies, more so than on any other holiday - so if anyone has some tips on keeping them away we would be interested.
