PlakChat / Be honest now!!
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:46:12 PM »
Well, we tried Plakias last year because we read some good things about it (mostly from this website).

We had previously been to Kefalonia, Corfu and Ithaka, which we loved, for several years and were looking for somewhere else that seemed a bit similar - laid back atmosphere, good food in friendly restaurants, warm seas etc...

Unfortunately, for us, Plakias did not live up to our expectations.  True, the rooms were adequate and the whole village was pleasant to look at, but we found the sea was often too rough, the wind often too strong and the food often poorly cooked and badly presented.  We did spend some time driving around to look at other parts of the island but were not very impressed with any of it.

I should say that we have also tried Rhodes (hated it) and Lesbos (quite nice) but so far we have to say the Ionian Islands seem to have got it just right for us.

I am sorry if this upsets some of you but I am sure you have your own reasons for loving Plakias.

PlakChat / Who Speaks Greek ?

We arrived back home this afternoon after our week in the sun (mind you, looking at the size of some of the clouds that were gathering, we may have just timed it right for once).

On the subject of greek speaking, I got chatting to the chat who rents the sunbeds for the Alianthos - we don't know his name, so we have decided to call him Terry.  He said he moved to Myrthios 3 years ago after holidaying in Plakias for 20 years.  I was a bit surprised that he only seems to have picked up 3 words of Greek in all that time - "Nai", "Oxi" and "Ela".  He said that he spent his evenings and winters primarily with the ex-pat brigade in Myrthios/Selia - I suppose this means he didn't bother to learn the language.  What a shame/disgrace (I will let you take your pick)

The reason we had such a satisfying experience in Kefalonia, was because we learnt the language and were able, therefore, to mix on a more equal footing with the locals.

Has anyone heard of Astraeus airlines.  I looked up their website and I think basic  is the adjective I'm looking for.

Pritch

It sounds like a good place to forget my diet in.

We, hopefully, arrive in Plakias early afternoon.  My luggage has been reduced to a bare minimum so that I don't have to wait at reclaim.

After checking my airline out on a review page it would seem that the chances are I will be hungry so Gallini Taverna would be a good place to start.

Although I'm a very poor swimmer, (just can't get the hang of holding my breath) I do actually snorkel   so thanks for the tip.

Don't be jealous or you'll end up looking like this.

Hi reddiablo

In greek you are a kokkinos diavlos.  I am a Beckham admirer, but not necessarily for the sport!! (Thanks to the Mirror for the pictures this week) but good luck to Man U without him.

I'll try and pass your message on when I go in 3.5 days time, just thought I'd get that in.

I am also counting my early start on Tuesday as part of my holiday because I love shopping at the airport.

Further countdowns to come over the weekend.

From
A very sad (but excited)holiday maker to be.

I'm sure I'll have a great time. If the other visitors to Plakias are as laid back and friendly as the ones who post on the board I can't go far wrong. And you could be right about the ley lines.

I'll let you all know when I get back.

(5.5 days to go now and counting)

Happy? I should be.  Only six days until I jet off for my first visit to Plakias.  I hope you all understand the responsibility you hold for my excitement at going.  You've all talked it up so much I'm expecting a mixture of heaven itself with a dash of paradise and a gusty breeze pebble dashing my body with sand.

I' ve got my tickets, booked my parking at Gatwick and want to wish bon voyage to anyone else going on the 6am flight to Heraklio

I was lucky enough to spend 8 years living in Kefallonia in my twenties.  My brother and I went to spend a summer there with some friends and ended up staying.

There were no other english speakers there in the winter (at that time) so we had to learn greek. It took a frustrating two years of speaking pigeon greek before I felt I could hold a more involved conversation.  Please don't let this put you off.  My friends were really patient with me and we had great times laughing at my mistakes. Once I went into a stationers and asked for some kolo (bum) instead of kolla (glue).

I have never had a bad reaction from anyone who had to put up with my bad grammar and poor pronunciation, instead they encouraged me and praised my efforts to learn their language.  I also found it to be a great ice-breaker and made lots of friends through my efforts.  You will also find that your greek improves most evenings after the first apperitif!!! or is it that you lose your inhibitions ?

I can't recommend enough just opening your mouth and having a go.

PlakChat / Independent vs Tour Operator
« on: August 19, 2003, 10:24:19 PM »
Mike

I booked independently this year and paid £155 for a flight, got a room off the internet for an agreed price of 20 euros a night after e-mailing the owner and not going by the price on his site, and hired a car through cheapest flights for £140 a week.  Two of us are going to share the cost of the car but as I want a room of my own this works out much cheaper than paying single room supplements through a tour operator.

Total cost of my holiday is approx £370 including airport parking, my own studio, a weeks car rental, flight and insurance.

Where to eat...or not! / Vegetarian Food?
« on: August 18, 2003, 07:57:02 PM »
If you ask the owner most tavernas have some form of vegetarian food ( unless your a vegan or have specific requirements).  Many greeks only eat meat and fish several times a week rather than every day so they do have a wide range of vegetarian dishes. Often the stuffed tomatoes are veggie and you can always make up your main meal from the starters, fried courgettes, aubergines and peppers. Gigantes, fasolada and a variety of salads also make an enjoyable meals, especially with platefuls of chips.  Then theres mushrooms a la grec, saganaki and ask about the 'horta' which is seasonal green vegetables.

I've got to go now cos i'm hungry!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask

For the last five years we have booked both independently and with  tour operator depending on who works out cheaper.  Either way we always get a car for the length of the stay which cuts out the very tedious transfer times and the reps attempts to part with our money.  I don't attend the welcome parties etc but did make use of the hotel facilities provided the one time we had a 7 hour delay.  Going with a tour company doesn't mean you can't be independant.

Whatever you do enjoy your hols.

Does anybody know what the exchange rate is like through the ATM's.  It's so convenient to use and saves carrying cash but I wondered if you got stung on comission or interest rates.  (we're off in 4 weeks today)
