Holiday report from 30th May to 13th June
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:29:39 PM »
We are just back from 2 weeks holiday in Plakias, our 10th visit since 2006.
We did not visit Plakias in 2012 so some of the changes we saw might not be as recent as we thought.

These our our observations and views:

Fights:
We flew with Eastjet from Manchester 7.10 Thursday morning and arrive in Iraklion 13.20in the afternoon.
Return flights to Manchester 2pm Thurdsay 13th June.
All flights on time and service by airline first class.

Hotel:
We stayed with George at the Creta Mere for the 8th time and as usual had room no 7.
The hotel is "basic Greece" but spotlessly clean and the view from the balcony is to die for.
We will return to Creta Mere same time (ish) next year

Weather:
We have usually been to Plakias about the second 2 weeks in May and had some very mixed weather.
So we thought to go a little later to see if thing improved.
Were quite surprised at the mix of weather we had.
The weather was very unpredictable.
Yes, 14 days of sun and no rain ( except for a down pour on our return drive to the airport)
And only one very windy day which kept us from the beach.
But it never seemed to be settled into early Greek summer weather.
But if truth were known , we would gladly settle for the same again next year !!

Eating out:
We used Harakas, Sirocco,Sifis, Kastello and Medousa.
There are many more to chose from but only so many nights to do so.

Harakas:
Topclass food and sevice.
Our favourite place to eat in Plakias
Thank you Sonja.

Sirocco:
Under new owners since Stavros and Maria Left 2 years ago.
Food now is as good as, if not better, than before.
We ate there 4 times and will make it a regular haunt in future

Sifi:
Sifi is as Sifi always was

Kastello:
Food goodbut the place was almost empty when we ate there
The walk back in the dark can be a bit of a problem

Medousa:
Good food and service.
First week good with very mixed nationalities.
The second week it became far to Anglicised for us.

Clothed/unclothed:
We thought that this year the mix of clothed and unclothed beach goers was just about right.
The sunbeds outside the last beach bar (opposite Pelagrinos) were for clothed bathing and there were signs up to that effect.
The next 100 yards of beach was a "transition zone" with the first 20 yards clothed, going to nude bathing after that up to the far end sunbeds.
All seemed to us to be in order with little or no problems.
But others may have other views.

Changes in Plakias:
As said, we did not go last year so these may not be new changes
The supermarket next to the campsite has doubled in size and now stocks everything you could need.
They have also built a huge concrete extension at the back of the supermarket which noone seems to know what for ?
The main bakery has been refurbished and opened Monday 9th June  and is much as it was, still very good.
A few places were closed and either left empty or replaced with other things but on the whole, Plakias is as Plakias was, at least to our eyes.

Visitor mix:
First week was very quiet with a very wide range of nationalities
The second week was very much busier and the percentage of English/British voices heard increased a lot.
But the town was still only half full or just over when we left.
Eating out in the evening, there was not one place at which a table or more could be had at peak eating times.

Holiday overall was top class and we will be back same time, same places, next June.
