PlakChat / Holiday Dilemma.
« on: May 11, 2012, 07:09:39 PM »
Do you think it perverse to go on Holiday to avoid the Olympics with Olympic Holidays and to do it in the country that gave us the Olympics?

Gossip / A couple of live webcams for you.
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:39:47 PM »
Sorry folks but these cams are near the dreaded Hersonissos. Real time streaming so you can check what the day is like and enjoy the fact that you are not visiting the busier parts of the Island.
Really worth a look, just wish there were webcams like this near Plakias. On the other hand it may make more people want to visit. Best keep it just how it is.

Looks like either the first link works only during the day or the webcam is offline, the second link is working fine tonight 30th April 2012.
The first link was so interesting too. Drunken Tourists, wandering small dogs and Woman who appeared to be harvesting weeds for Horta?

PlakChat / Gio Ma new website?
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:30:05 PM »
Hi all. I was not sure where to post this so chanced my arm in chat.
The Gio Ma seems to be building a new website (says 2012 at the bottom).
Looks very slick but the Taverna page is not working yet 20th April 2012.
It was one of the favourite places to eat last September for my other half and Daughter.
Their accommodation looks very good too with excellent views.
Really looking forward to our holiday this year.
Here is the website http://www.gioma.gr/

Holiday Companies / Olympic and Aegean agree flights.
« on: March 30, 2012, 09:59:01 AM »
Olympic Holidays has signed a deal with Aegean Airlines to provide flights on key routes this summer.

The first routes announced are Birmingham to Cyprus, Humberside to Crete, Belfast to Cyprus, Belfast to Rhodes and more routes are planned.
"This additional capacity is good news for agents and travellers in the regions, as these islands are our top selling destinations and there is pent-up local demand," says Lynne Brocklesby, Olympic Holidays agency sales manager.

The first Aegean Airlines departure for Olympic Holidays is on 4 May.

Holiday Companies / Olympic cheap this morning.
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:36:31 AM »
Just looked at Olympic to torture myself. Staying at the Dora or the Costas and flying from East Midlands or Birmingham on the 26th of June 2012.
The price was £326.00 for two weeks. Sadly paid £60 more than this. Wonder if it will drop even more? Gatwick, Manchester were still over £400 for the same weeks.

Gossip / How British are you? Just for fun.
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:37:03 AM »
I has a bit bored today and was reading Make Bradford British on 4OD. Anyways there is a test on the page to see how much you know about British Society.
I amazingly scored 100%, this was with three educated guesses and playing in the national pub quiz league may have given me an edge.
Then I had a go at the official home office page and again full marks. Not bad for a Irish/Greek mongrel. Does this mean I can stay?

Ok, will bugger off and be smug elsewhere before someone throws something at me.

PlakChat / Wiki Worldflicks Plakias.
« on: February 15, 2012, 09:38:25 PM »
Hi all.
I did not know where to place this in the Forum so I am chancing my arm here.
Been doing the usual mooching around the internet looking for more information about Plakias when I came across Wiki Worldflicks.
Not a very intriguing name I grant you, but a very useful resource. It works a little like your excellent map of Plakias but covers photographs (hover for thumbnail) and video links.
It uses Google Maps but works in a more user friendly way. So have a look around Crete. You may like the site or you may fail to see the point but it is worth a look.

Where to eat...or not! / Where to eat for a Ceoliac?
« on: February 13, 2012, 11:37:29 AM »
Here I am asking questions again.
I sound like an awkward old sod.
Unfortunately I am not in the full bloom of health and can no longer eat Gluten (Wheat, Barley, Mustard etc) because of Ceoliacs disease and the Docs have now sworn me off Dairy, so no cheese.
Too be honest it has become a real problem, no Pasta, no thick sauces as they normally use wheat as a thickener, no batter unless it has been made with corn flour. To make matters worse my other half only eats Fish and Vegetables, rice, pasta, pastry, cheese, fruit etc are fine.
Don't we sound fun :-(. I would eat nearly anything but life has turned a bit cruel of late. How I miss Pasta, Pizza, Cheese and good crusty bread.
Will get to my question now as have given you all an idea of our problems.
Has anyone got any recommendations of where to eat? No use going to a place with no fish or good Veggie dishes but I love a good Stifado. It looks like there are good places for fish dishes but it would be great to find one with good meat and good fish dishes.
Can you help a starving Man and a Fishy Woman? Maybe I should rephrase that..but I won't :-)
Thank you for any help.
John V.

Where to go / Driving from Plakias to Timpaki/ Tymbaki?
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:20:25 AM »
Hello again.
Has anyone done the drive to Tymbaki to visit Phaestos?
Googly Earth says 57Km but not being a trusting soul I thought I would ask.
Route does look fairly straightforward but is the road tarmac all the way?
Looking forward to seeing Plakias again after a break of 36 years (scary).
I Sadly lived on the North coast of Crete many moons ago (before mass tourism).
In 1991 I took the ex Wife to show her where I lived in the Winter and actually wept to see what had happened to the tiny fishing port near Malia I used to know.
At least my Fathers village of Lappa in the mountains remained the same.

Where to stay / Dora information needed.
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:20:23 AM »
Hello. We have booked at the Dora for end of June/ beginning of July. My Wife wants air con and a bit of a view. Which are the best rooms to book? Do the upper and larger rooms have air con and a better view? We have read that some look out on a concrete wall as a large house is now blocking. Thank you for any help.
