Plakias / Plakias Lending Library
« on: October 27, 2007, 01:25:34 PM »
Plakias Lending Library is north of the centre of the village in the valley of the river that comes in through the gorge between Mirthios and Selia, the two villages that overlook Plakias.
Following signs to Plakias Youth Hostel from the village will help you find the library since it is just a few metres further north.
It is marked on the
Plakias Map, a link to which can be found in the top right corner of this page, or you can use this
Google Maps link.

These are the latest opening hours for the Plakias Lending Library:
09:30 - 12:30 on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
17:00 - 19:30 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
These times were valid from 29th April 2007 until 30th September 2007 but may well be similar in the future.

If it is not possible for you to return borrowed books to the library they can be left at any of the following places:
Alianthos Car Hire, Joe's bar (Nufaro), the Livicon Hotel bar (opposite the taxi rank) or at the Plakias Youth Hostel.

Library postal address: Poste Restante, Plakias, Finikas 74060, Crete, Greece.

Library global coordinates: N35.19394 E24.39581

Library staff as at late September 2007:
Eddie: Chief Executive and Chief Cataloguer.
Alan: Assistant Chief Executive and Assistant Chief Cataloguer.
Lynne: Librarian.
Femke: Librarian.
Andy: Janitor.
Mike: Estate Manager.
Alan: Recruitment, Traning and H.R. Manager.
Phil: Librarian.

A second extension to the library was built in early 2007, this time running across the back of the original building.
It can just be seen in this picture taken at the library on 30th September 2007 on the occasion of the Saint Jerome's day party:

Plakias / Plakias
« on: February 24, 2007, 11:06:51 AM »
Plakias is the way it is because of where it is, a fair distance from both airports.

There are similar sized resorts with similar beaches much nearer to both Heraklion and Chania and they have developed faster and in different ways from Plakias.
Lots of people choose their holidays based on cost as the most important factor.
So the resorts nearer to the airports (and therefore cheaper) get those holidaymakers and develop accordingly.

If you don't mind the crowds, the burger bars, the noisy discos and the obnoxious drunks, go to one of the 'popular' north coast resorts.

People who like Plakias are prepared to pay the price of the extra travelling time from the airport.

Where to go / Guided river walk
« on: August 13, 2005, 09:09:39 AM »
In 1998 we had an enjoyable and very memorable day out and we plan to do it again.
There were only the two of us booked to do it and so had the guide to ourselves for the day.

A car and driver took us to the Venetian Bridge, just off the Prevelli road, and left us and our guide Albert there.
Albert found us some sticks to help with walking and we set off down the Kourtaliotiko river, walking in the river.
In June 1998 the water was at about its normal height for June.
In most places that meant just enough to cover your ankles.
Mind you, it was quite cold.

We walked down the river towards Palm Beach (Prevelli) and the sea, criss-crossing the river, sometimes in it and sometimes beside it.
There was lots of vegetation and shade so the heat of the day was not a problem.
I'm not a naturalist but I did appreciate all the flowers, herbs and colourful insects.
(Mosquitos were not a problem at that time of day).
There were odd places where we had to cross deeper, narrower parts of the river but it was never more than waist deep.
At times we had to scramble over or between rocks but we had no problems despite not being particularly active people.
Part way down we took a break for sandwiches and a drink beside a waterfall and shady pool and took the opportunity for a fresh water skinny dip.

We were very happy to have a guide as the walk fet quite remote.
Between the Venetian Bridge and Palm Beach we only saw other people once and they were walking on the far side of the valley.
It was remarkable how remote it felt, despite the fact that we could never have been more that half a kilometer from the road.
The whole walk was only about 3 or 4 kilometers but we took our time and probably took about 4 hours before arriving at Palm Beach having stopped for a second river pool swim just before we got to the sea.
Once at the beach we had plenty of time for refreshments and yet another swim before the boat left to take us back to Plakias.

As far as I know, there are no longer organised walks like this but, having made contact with our guide Albert, I'm hoping to organise one for us Plakforms.
Because I've left it so late for this year the potential dates are quite limited.
Our window of opportunity is from the 17th to the 25th September with target dates of 17th to 19th.

Is anyone else interesting in joining this walk?
If so, please post in this topic as soon as possible.

Hi All,

I've been tidying up my Plakias related pictures on the web and that broke some of the links on this forum.
Most have been repaired but if you find any that I've missed, please let me know.

You can find them all here.

PlakChat / Getting there
« on: September 20, 2004, 12:38:02 PM »
Leave the airport by driving South towards the main north coast highway, NOT West towards the town.
After about 1 Km. turn right up the ramp following the signs for Rethymno and you'll be on the main road.
Keep going for 83 Km. then take the slip road off to the right, signposted Spili then turn left at the stop sign at the bottom and pass under the main road.
When you get over the mountains, take the right turn signposted Prevelli Monastery (brown sign) and Plakias.
You now have about 15 Km. to go.
Then just follow the signs for Plakias, turning left just through the village of Assomatos.
Total distance, 117 Km.

Where to stay / Rent a villa
« on: September 20, 2004, 12:09:31 PM »
A fantastic new opportunity for Plakias lovers has just become available.  If you have been on the beach at Plakias, especially at the South-Eastern end, you will have seen the three villas high on the hill overlooking the bay.  They are reached by a private road that turns left off the road up to Mirthios and Mariou.

Until now, they could only be rented long-term but they are now available for short-term rent, minimum one week.  They each sleep 2-4 persons and have a good sized living room with kitchen off, a proper batroom with washing machine and a big bedroom.  The one we viewed a couple of weeks ago had a veranda overlooking the bay and the valley towards Lefcogia and also a small terrace.

The view from up there is breathtaking.  Of course, unless you are very fit and love walking you would need to have transport available every day.  I for one would not attempt a day-time walk from the beach!

You can enquire about availability by writing to Manolis here
Please mention my name!  John Page

Here is a link to the villas' website.

From my experience of Plakias, I don't think there is much of a problem with crime, unless you count the taxi drivers driving on the wrong side of the road.

We often leave stuff on the beach while we go for lunch, relying on our 'neighbours' to keep an eye on things.
Not that anyone is likely to want to pinch my grotty old towel or put my snorkel in their mouth!

I've never heard of anyone having a problem whether it was on the beach, in their room or in a taverna.
Have you had, or heard of, any problems?

Unlike some other resorts, I've never seen safety deposit boxes either in the rooms or as a public service.
Are there any in Plakias?

PlakChat / Competition - with prizes!
« on: August 27, 2003, 03:37:26 PM »
Regular members may have noticed that the number of posts on this bulletin board has soared of late.
You may also have noticed that the number of posts is approaching the milestone 1000.

I hereby propose a competition.
To win, you must be the member who posts the 1000th message.
The prize will be 2 bottles of Mythos (provided by me).
I'm sure we'll easily achieve this while Ostraco is away so it should make a nice surprise for him when he gets back.

You didn't think there would not be rules?
Rule 1, The competition is open to members only, not administrators (sorry Andy!).
Rule 2, No silly posts just to get the numbers up.  All posts must have some substance.  I'm sure we can rely on Andy to delete posts which, in the opinion of a quorum of members (shall we say 10?) do not meet this requirement.
Rule 3, ... can't think of any more.

Notes:
To see the total number of posts to date, click 'Plakias Forums' in the top left corner of the screen and scroll down to 'Board Statistics'.  I'm not sure how often this is updated but it seems there is some lag.
To see the number of a particular post, display it on screen and click 'Posted' at the top of the post left of the date and time.

This is post number 973 so we've only got 27 to go...
