Plakias / Kalypso Cretan Village
« on: June 01, 2004, 11:15:23 AM »
I searched for the site a few days ago and found this: http://www.holidaycheck.de/hotel.php?hid=17267
Though it´s in "german" you might take some information about the "kalypso" from it. Don´t let you frighten cause paradise is just a mile away!
Bon Voyage!

Plakias / How about a Plakias book on real paper?!
« on: October 29, 2003, 08:11:58 AM »
Good morning!

I think it might work if everybody who wants to add his contribution would send x pieces [ x= number of involved people]of his work [plus a self-adressed envelope with an international valid stamp] to a central collecting point and manufacturer. [If there´s no one worse than me willing to do this I would do...] There it could be all mounted together and be placed inside a nicely designed cover. As soon as the book is ready it will be sent back to each in the s.a.envelope.It sounds like a mail-art-project...
The nice thing about it: everybody will get the same book, the work is nicely spread amongst the participating people and no money has to circulate around the world.

Thinking further...

Plakias / How about a Plakias book on real paper?!

Dear community!

I have been reading this board and Ostraco´s plakias site for a very long time and it´s a very fine thing! Though I`m not in my fourties yet I may be a little bit old fashioned and so I love books even more than screens. Wouldn´t it be good idea to create a book with contributions from people from all over the world who love this place like we do?! With all this people, ancient stories, photos, paintings, dishes, aromas, sounds ...and and and. Not only a print of this site. But the site could be the "goldmine" for it. We may find out a layout and everyone could add his own 4 sides [e.g.] and then we put them together, add this or that, stir well and ready.

We made things like that back in the good old times - when I studied fine arts - in a very cheap way via xerography. Everybody made his part x times  and after they have been put together with the others, everybody got his own book. That´s the cheap way. Or we print 250.000, sell it by amazon.com... Or... We have to think further about it...

I would be pleased to hear from you

PlakChat / Security.

That´s the place for the old "lost wallet story"...
Years ago we lost our whole money the first night on crete. After a few drinks in Meltemi with some friends of us and a small bottle of tsikoudia we jumped out of our clothes right into the sea. In total darkness I didn´t notice that I forgot to hang the wallet round my neck again when we departed.
It was about high noon the other day when we got up to leave our room in sophia when I noticed what I had lost: All our money for the next two weeks in cash [equivalent to 1200 Euros today] !!!
In panic we ran back to the beach. Giorgos from Sofia came with us to seek...
And you won´t believe: we found it ´tween all the people on the beach, totally wet and the money was still inside!!! It seems the sea took it with the tide and brought it back to the land with the flood. We dried the money in front of the fan in sophia and   .
That´s our little wallet-wonder of plakias. And that´s about security in Plakias

Plakias / VIRGINS!

Best places for snorkeling are two small beaches east of damnoni [ Under water there´s a hole in the cliff between the two beaches you can dive through] and shinaria beach. Even when the sea at the plakias bay gets rough and the water is not so clear it´s still phantastic there.

Where to eat...or not! / Where to eat?
« on: August 22, 2003, 08:51:37 AM »
The bread at KriKri WAS really phantastic. Unfortunately they don´t serve it anymore and this is really a shame!! KriKri has been our favourite restaurant since our first visit in the last century when the three brothers made a good, a very very job there. It´s reduced to standard now and crowded with a huge staff hencing between the tables.

We ate at many different places this year.
Very recommendable:
Lysseos, Secret Nest (fish), Christos Taverna, (due to the magic place at the seafront under the trees), Panorama (?, Mirthios, Meze, herbs, etc yamyammyammm!), Leftheris Spanakakis (donuts on the beach)
Special tip: The Restaurant opposite the Ouranos (up the street next to the souvlakeria in centre of Plakias) Special meals from Marocco and so happy to welcome somebody cause it was often very quiet there. Late in the night the master of the house starts singing ancient songs from North Africa. Extra cake, extra fruit, extra raki...)

See you

Where to stay / Which hotel is best???
« on: August 21, 2003, 10:07:52 AM »
There is no "best hotel" in Plakias I think and that was the fine thing about the place. There are so many differrent locations to meet the needs of of almost everyone. I wouldn´t like to residate in the Alianthos because they are becoming to dominant in town. The Big Plakias MONOPOLY? Several big hotels, car rental, the train etc. etc. The next will be a first class hotel at the place of the former meltemi club. Then they will overtake the Paligremnos... Step by step on the way to the "Farend".

Plakias / Mosquitos and Chemists
« on: July 21, 2003, 12:32:16 PM »
We´re back from our three weeks in plakias since two weeks now. It´s been so marvellous....!! Wanna be there again!!!
Though I couldn´t believe that it would work I bought one of those electronic Anti-Mosquito-machines to plug to 220V [ works with ultra high tones and without any toxic substances.] To my surprise it worked and we spent many nights on our balcony at Ouranos without being attacked by mosquitos.

This year there were many wasps around esp. they enjoyed the streams of fresh sweetwater at the showers at the far end of the bay. One bite into my arm and made me look like Poppeye. [Lucky it was the arm!!] My 2 minute visit at the doc [40 Euro, please!] led my to the"Apotheke" for antihistamine.

Plakias / Rent a boat?
« on: May 28, 2003, 11:53:09 AM »
Dear Community,

counting the days ´til our take off to Crete on June 16th we are thinking about putting our poor old inflatable Rubberboat into our bags. I think it would be nice to reach the secluded beached without getting bloody feet. On the other hand I remember last years loss of the couple from Germany who seemed to cruise the sea in that way and were blown to Libya.
Did anyone of you survive such trip [not to Libya, but ´round Plakias]?
Is it recommandable? Dangerous cliffs around? Sharks?
Are there any boats to rent in Plakias now?
Thank you all and
Kalo Taxidi

Plakias / Bike/car rental
« on: April 28, 2003, 03:46:32 PM »
It tried to make a kind of a joke when I said in an older posting " this bikes are good to cruise from the secret nest...) It´s no problem to walk the way in any condition you may be... [300m from Ostraco in the fields] We had rooms in the secret nest with a nice terrace in 1997 and we enjoyed it very much . Especially Nikos Papadakis, a fierce looking man with a black beart, was the best man around. He was a fisherman in the earliest morning and the maitre de cuisine in the night. Try his fish "and try the eyes - it´s the best" [Nikos] and drink a few bottles of Tsikoudia with him.

Plakias / Airport Taxi Transfer
« on: April 11, 2003, 11:50:01 AM »
The price for the one-way transfer from Kazantzakis airport to Plakias used to be about 100-120 DM in in the 90ies. I recently heard about   a price of about 190 Euros  for two-way transport via taxi [Jahn Reisen] We decided to hire a car for a week which will wait for us at the airport. So we can drive ourselves. As we were able to split the times we use the car, we will hold it for three days at the beginning of our time in Plakias and again for four days near our departure. So we can drive back to irakleion the day we fly home. If we hadn´t the pleasure to cruise with two little children we would surely go by bus cause it´s so cheap and really more authentic than this horrible non-stop taxi races!!!

Have a good time
und schöne Grüße aus Aachen

If you intend to hire a bike you have to be aware of the risks! A friend´s friend died there a few years ago. I think most accidents happen with small scooters driven by people who never drove a vehicle with less than 4 wheels. They are good to cruise from Secret Nest to the Meltemi but they´re not made for off-road use. If you want to take a big machine you should be an experienced driver and better: a good team on the bike. If one of you doesn´t feel good with it: let it be.   Take it slowly!

Have a nice trip
