Time to read a book? Not for us this year! Due to the extremely high prices being charged by Olympic for this year, our normal 2 week holiday to Kostas has been cut to 1 week, but we will attempt to fit 2 weeks worth of eating, drinking and sun bathing into 1 week, so time to relax with a good book is definately out of the question! We may need another holiday to recover from rushing around to all the tavernas and bars in Plakias, Myrthios and Lefkogeia.
See you all in June (don't blink or you'll miss us)

Holiday Companies / 2011 price hike
« on: April 03, 2011, 12:37:42 PM »
Just a quick update on the Gatwick /Iraklion flight times from Olympic. We booked last september expecting the usual 09.00 Monarch flight, but, after a couple of false starts, it seems the Strategic Airlines flight is 11.25 departure, almost two and a half hours later, and I am concerned about arrival time in Plakias, given the extended transfers from Iraklion and the 'round the island' route. Then check in at Kostas, a shower would be nice, but will the bars and restaurants still be open I wonder?

Holiday Companies / 2011 price hike
« on: February 04, 2011, 09:24:59 PM »
Yes, the price hikes are across the board to every destination from every package company. We have already booked with Olympic for the Costas again, did so in September last, and I won't annoy you by telling the price, suffice to say it was a lot lower than prices today, but we are paying the same for 1 week that we paid for 2 weeks in 2008! Prices are unbelievable! In 2009 we went to Lesvos, Petra, and loved it (but then I do love Ouzo) but , again prices have gone through the roof for that destimation this year (and last). In 2010 we went to Cuba, Cayo Guillermo, for 2 weeks, all inclusive, and the total cost was a a lot less than Plakias or Lesvos for 2 weeks, but we needed to see Plakias one last time before prices and travel insurance costs prices us out of any holidays.
Arriving 14th June for 1 week - how will we fit it all in? Sirocco for evenings, Livicon for drinks, Myrthios at least one evening, On The Rocks for drinks, Kyma for lunch Pitta souvlaki - the list of must do's is endless.
And yes, I have seen the reference to the new airline Strategic Airlines, and, according to that website they are operating in Europe.
Lets hope it all stays in bed and that we can get back to Plakias in June.

PlakChat / missing it

PLEEEEASE stop all this talk about who what where and when in Plakias, have some feeling about some of us who are having to wait another 10 months before returning to all the wonderful old haunts and people in Plakias, but, all the same, enjoy yourselves and have a Mythos and/or an ouzo for me.

Plakias / Draught Beer
« on: August 04, 2009, 04:18:44 PM »
Draught lager, yes, this was available in 2007 from 'On The Rocks', just past the Sirokko taverna (Hello Babis). They sell the Athenian Craft beer, in several varieties, including their 'red' beer.
They claim to be a micro brewery, but I have seen their beers on sale throughout Greece, and I am sure 'micro brewery' should not be so widely available.
I am hoping to return to Plakias in 2010, having been away too long, but I HAD to go to Lesvos to restock my supplies of ouzo. Lesvos is the place the best ouzo is made, and I can recommend Petra to all who like Plakias.
Here's hoping for Olympic to offer some good deals to Kostas Chrysoulla in the very near future, may see you all in June 2010.

Books? Don't have the time, takes me long enough to read the Mythos label and the Ouzo label.

Where to eat...or not! / Stelios Taverna in Lefkogia
« on: June 20, 2008, 05:45:45 PM »
I agree that Stelios Taverna is very good. We went there 3 years ago for lunch on one of the train trips. The meatballs in tomato sauce was gorgeous, and we would have returned there this year if the train had been running, but were unsure if the taverna was still in the same hands, and didn't want to fork out for a taxi if we were to be disappointed that Stelios had gone.
Now we know we shall make the efort on our next holiday to Plakias.
Perhaps this deserves an addition to the article system?

Where to stay / Advice

And I have now thought of another reason to go independant, using Gatwick/Chania, (ignore the extra cost, Plakias is worth it), you would not be lumped in with all those other people, the Not Saga Louts, going to Malia, Stalis and Hersonnisos. This years return from Heraklion was made memorable (?) by a large group of our American cousins returning from a week of whatever.

The problem with the return transfer was the timing of the departure from Plakias I think. We left Plakias at 11.10 in the morning, whereas previous years the departure was 10.00 or thereabouts, so we arrived at the airport last of all the coaches, with no time to spare, especially as some of the people ion the coach were for the EARLIER Birmingham flight, I have no idea how they got on with the short tome to flight time, considering our rush through. All of this not helped
by there being no rep whatsoever on the coach at any point during the transfer.
I too doubt getting any results from the complaint, but I will try!

Didn't feel a thing in Plakias, but then I had been at the Siroko with many after dinner ouzos with Babis, so I was probably sound asleep.

Where to go / Mirthios
« on: June 18, 2008, 03:48:02 PM »
Just back from Plakias, and visited Myrthios as usual, but using a taxi as the Train is no more!
The taxis charge 6€ each way, plus tip, so it is not cheap, and prices may well increase as petrol is now 1.34€ a litre (£1.10) and rising!
Do try the Plateia (spelling?), great views, and a wonderful, varied menu sure to please anyone.

Hi, I have just returned from Plakias, and can confirm the taxis as 100 euros from the airport, but only 80 euros from Plakias, so if you can pre book a taxi from Plakias you should save a little.
I have not tried the Alianthos Gardens, but a couple I met on the return transfer found it somewhat noisy as many people arrive/leave at odd hours in the middle o the night, plus, of course, it is more expensive being half board, thus reducing the opportunities to sample all of the great tavernas etc. in Plakias.
Assuming Googlr earth is up to date, there are not many places with a pool. I stayed again at Costas Chrysoulla, and found it ideal for doing exactly what you say you want to do. It is basic, but clean, and very typically Greek, and has air conditioning if you want it (5€ a day). I would certainly be happy going there again, and I will - can't wait to be back in Plak again.
The return transfer with Olympic was AWFUL, and I am about to make a major complaint to Olympic about the time/queues, and nearly missing the flight. Nuf said, 80€ is a bargain!

Plakias / Weather in Plakias
« on: June 18, 2008, 03:26:29 PM »
Just returned from 2 weeks in Plakias, (June 3rd - 17th.) wonderful weather, hot, no clouds, only 2 days of 'The Plakias Wind' but nothing to worry about, especially around Costas Chrysoula pool. I was told it was going to get hotter.
