Plakias / FIRE
« on: July 02, 2008, 08:10:12 AM »
We've just got back from Plakias and heard about the fire from the family whose studios we stay in (SKINOS).  They suspected a cigarette too.  They lost some trees but also their water hoses which seemed to be what concerned them most.

We've just returned from Plakias and in fact the new harbour is exactly opposite SKINOS 2 where we were staying.  As the rooms are above the road we couldn't see the development at all and only heard work going on there for about two hours on two mornings!  We also only saw one lorry going down there.  I imagine at this rate it will be some time before the harbour is finished!

We've not been for about eighteen months and as ever had a wonderful week.  Every visit sees a few more properties but somehow nothing changes.....  Hope the big new development of villas as you drive in does not spoil that

We've stayed several times at SKINOS which is just on the other side of town.  They have two properties - skinos 2 is a little further and situated just above the road with. Both places have wonderful views of the sea.   Absolutely lovely family.  We're going next week!

OH NO!  I'm going to have to hide this news from John or he won't get on the plane!   John and Zell - I wonder if by any chance you are on the same flight as us next Tuesday - 10.15 from Gatwick to Chania?  We've always flown to Heraklion before so looking forward to seeing some new sights on the journey to Plakiaa.

Thaniks everyone - I really hope the BBC have got it wrong - 30 is just about OK but 45...... George, how can you bear it?!!!!  It would be great if this forum had the current weather on it - I have no idea how to do that but just thought I'd throw it in as an idea.....
All the best

We've always visited Plakias in Spring or Autumn before but this year we're visiting next week (June 26).  I had a quick look at the BBC weather page and it is predicting a temperature of 45C on Sunday.  What will this be like?  Will there be a breeze?  Will I need to stay in my room with the A/C on!?  Any tips?
Thanks Alison

Thanks for that.  We're going on June 26 for a week - can't wait.  Bringing some American friends but will tell them not to tell anyone back home about Plakias.

we usually stay at SKINOS 2 which I think is beyond this new harbour development.  Does anyone know if I'm right in thinking that?

Where to stay / Where is good??

We have stayed several times just on the other side of Plakias at SKINOS 2 studios - great views, lovely family running them.  5 Good size rooms each with a double and single bed, kitchenette and shower room.  Balcony overlooks the terrace.  Very quiet location but only a 10 minute walk into town.  It's a bit of a steep slope up to the studios so if you're not too fit you could try SKINOS 1 which you arrive at first.  They have a website and you can email them SKINOS-PLAKIAS <Skinos@acn.gr>

Plakias / Car rental

We've used Alianthos a couple of times and they will bring the car to the airport for you if you've not got a transfer organized. This cost no extra and they were cheaper than all the airport companies.

We had an email from the family whose studios we stay in (SKINOS) - they lost about 120 olive trees and 10,000m of water pipe.  Though they also said that all their property and family was safe, the sun was shining and they were happy!  We're hoping to return at the end of September which seems the best way of helping them.
