Plakias / "Oxi Day" in Plakias
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:21:25 PM »
At about ten in the morning, a couple of school mini-busses picked up all the local children from the main bus stop, in the village centre.

The children were bussed up to the church for the service (due to start about 10:30).  The church must be the best part of 600 metres from the centre :!:

From around 11:00, the crowds started to gather near the bus stop, us included.  As time passed, one of the "music bars" put on an ancient recording of military marches.  When we could hear the distant thump - thump - thump of a bass-drum, he switched off the "broadcast".

At 11:36:58, we saw the following ......

If the images look a bit chaotic and disorganised, it's just photo-journalism.  The whole thing went into a new dimension of entropy, as the children got to the bus stop and wandered off in all directions, some with family but none with the teachers who were desperately trying to keep them together.

It was all very reassuringly Greek.

Plakias / "Village Store" closes ....
« on: October 30, 2008, 03:51:40 PM »
Sadly,  Ali & Dave have had to close "The Village Store"
 - not their business decision
    - it was down to a large dose of "Greek family business needs".

The big problem for the immediate future is that they don't have a direct internet connection .... any messages will be picked up/answered on a hit-&-miss,  as and when basis.

On the positive side, Ali was still putting in a few hours for Alianthos Car Hire ...

.... and may be the resident Olympic Rep., next year, if the planned expansion of accommodation offered by Olympic goes ahead.
{Note: Edwina may also be moving on to Chania, subject to expansion there.  (Plus, it's her home base, anyway.)}

Hi, Both,

Sorry about the rude title but I posted a PM last week and I assume you haven't noticed it yet.

Batten down the hatches - we're back in town in one short week!

See you soon,

Chas & Sam.

Gossip / More new developments

From today's Guardian ....

UK firm plans vast resort on fragile coast

Harsh course of nature - the response mentioned, from Dr Oliver Rackham.

If the "government" can sanction this style of desecration, there's little hope left for the more accessible parts of Crete.

PlakChat / Current weather
« on: February 18, 2008, 02:54:51 PM »
According to a few of the web-weather sites over the last couple of days, the Aegean area is supposed to be suffering Arctic conditions!

One report on ERT states "the biggest part of Chania is snowbound" - which may be down to mistranslation of "highest part" .... but snow is definitely causing problems.

So, what's it like in Plakias?  Has it really been colder than Manchester?!!!

Gossip / Reporting back (alternative)
« on: October 15, 2007, 03:15:29 PM »
We got back from a wonderful couple of weeks in/on Naxos last Friday - last charter flight out of Mykonos for this year.

Stayed at the Antonina in Ag. Anna (Kosmar).

Ag. Anna is in the north end of about 20km of "far end" beach ..... it doesn't get much better than that

Two weeks of uninterrupted sun with a bit (a biggish bit) of wind in the first week but nothing like the Plakias Meltemi this July  {OK, the sun set each evening - you knew what I meant  :'(  }

The only shortcoming was the absence of Raki ..... we had to resort to Metaxa tria  (Shock, horror!)

Most tavernas and bars had closed but the half-dozen still open were well up to the job and the local wine was always quaffable.

Once I've finally got round to writing a few articles for Plakias ..... I may do something more detailed about Naxos ............ don't hold your breath

Forum and Website discussion / Being "hacked"?
« on: August 14, 2007, 03:01:37 PM »
First off, I AM PARANOID ... this could be a false alarm.

However, when I went to "http://www.plakias.co.uk/" (testing a link I posted on another forum), I had two unusual things happen:

1.  My AV software popped-up a Trojan warning - reassuringly to say it hadn't downloaded anything.

2.  Firefox / NoScript warning bar popped-up to notify me that a (new) script was pending execution, from "wdqccrzpmd.hk" - needless to say, I haven't allowed it to run!

Ploppy, please calm my nerves, tell me (1) was just coincidence (I had several other tabs open) and (2) is something you inserted to do good things.

PlakChat / Ali's payrise
« on: July 21, 2007, 06:16:42 PM »
Looks like Ali has had her payrise request approved ... and it's being funded by the Mykonos punters ....

{Tech. note - this IS a genuine screenshot; I have not "tweaked" it at all.}

Plakias / 2007 questions
« on: May 22, 2007, 01:35:39 PM »
that should read as "questions for 2007" - I only have a few, honest.

ONE: The Train.
Is it back in service (or likely to be)?

If not, what options are there for local transport?

I ask this because I have some "walking difficulties" - that avatar is an exaggeration but I need an elbow crutch to substitute for my duff leg.  Provided the road is reasonably flat I reckon I could manage to get to Souda beach but hills are a real problem for me.  So, heading over to the Amoudia's on foot, is probably out.

TWO: The bus(es).
At this time, the KTEL website is still showing off-season timetables.  Does anybody know what/when/if the summer timetable and/or services will be?

Exploring by local bus is great, chance to see things from higher up (than a car) and mix with the locals at the same time.

THREE: Kosmar rep.
Ali, is it still you?

If so, do the Aretousa Studios have kettles?  I need a litre of caffeine to start my day ... only after that can I think of going in search of the ultimate kaffe Ellenikos, skieto.
(If not, I bet you know where sells them )
****

I'll let somebody else think up the remaining 2004 questions
