Announcements / Articles needed
« on: July 22, 2007, 09:30:53 PM »
Hi Guys,

Am hoping to get the Article system (Link Here) up and running with some new articles and comments.

I think it would be a really useful resource, especially with all the new members recently.

If you fancy saying a few words about a particular place (Accom, Taverna, Bar... whatever) please feel free. If the place already exists in the system you can add your views in a 'comment'

Otherwise you can create a new article (Click the New Topic button in the relevant category). I will then authorise the new article as soon as I can. Feel free to add pictures, as always if you want some piccies hosted online I can help. You could always upload to my site if you want (see  this thread ).

I will work on adding links between the places and the Plakias Map, i.e in the article you can click a link to see exactly where it is and when on the map you can click on a link to read its write-up.

I may not be able to do too much this next couple of weeks as I have a business trip but I will certainly be checking in so that I can authorise any new article.

Any questions or suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,

Paul

Plakias / How often do you do it?
« on: July 22, 2007, 12:39:59 PM »
Plakias certainly has its fair share of returning visitors each year.

Just thought I would get a feel for just quite how much of a dedicated lot we are.

Myself and Margherita tend to go once a year in September. Once went in June due to work committments. September suits us as it is after the school holidays, the sea is lovely and warm and the weather is still good.

Wouldn't mind going twice a year but having only 20 days holiday and other pressures like family visits make this impossible.

The poll only allows three questions but I could of asked 'How long do you go for?' We do the standard 2 weeks but last year we did 3 which was heavenly. I know a lot of people also split the holiday with another resort so let us know where else you go.

Thanks,

Paul

Announcements / Voluntary Subscription Available
« on: July 01, 2007, 04:41:03 PM »
I'm sure you all agree that we have a great community of people here.

The site pretty much runs itself and requires little or no intervention from myself or John.
I occasionally add new features and upgrade the site when possible because I enjoy doing this and love to see the forums flourish.

As many of you are aware we have had to upgrade our site hosting due to the forums popularity. Some members have kindly offered financial support to assist in the costs associated in hosting the forum.

To this end I have added a subscription package to the forum. It is obviously completely voluntary and can be accessed by going to 'my controls' link near the top of the page. Then you can select 'Purchase Paid Subscriptions' on the left hand menu.

I have put the cost at £5 and purchasing this will make you a forum 'Sponsor'. As a thankyou you will have a few added bonuses. Your upload limit will be increased from 2MB to 20MB. You will be able to have 500 Personal Messages stored instead of 100 and you can also upload a bigger picture for your personal photo.

Currently you can only pay by PayPal, if you would like to use some other method please let me know. Also let me know if you would like to remain anonymous and we can sort something out.

I'll reiterate that this is completely voluntary and nothing else has changed on the forum at all.

If you have any suggestions i'd be pleased to hear them.

Also feel free to ply me with Mythos in September  Always appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Paul

Announcements / We're Back...
« on: June 28, 2007, 10:25:17 PM »
Hiya,

Yes we went over our quota (again  ) so the site was unavailable for much of today.

I have liaised with John and the good news is that our site has new upgraded hosting with 700MB of space and 30GB bandwidth a month (comapred with the 5 we had) which should see us right for the forseeable.

Everything should be ok but if anything is amiss please drop me a line.
I am tied up for the next couple of days so I may not get into the forum but will check e-mails, thanks to those who e-mailed me today.

Cheers,

Paul

Holiday Companies / Excel Flights Changed/Cancelled in September
« on: June 20, 2007, 07:57:34 PM »
Just got home to find a letter from Excel Airways saying that our flight to Heraklion is cancelled due to a 'Commercial Decision'

Further checking shows that they have actually just changed the flight times through Aug/Sep to make them earlier (see below)
So what was a 21:45 flight is now 18:45. Thay didn't automatically book us on that.

I phoned up and cancelled as the 18:45 is too early for after work. Luckily First Choice still had availability for a little more dosh so now booked on that instead.

Shame Kosmar and Olympic don't do Fridays from Gatwick as some of the package deals are great.

Suppose I had better get some accommodation sorted now

Gossip / Photos of Plakias...
« on: April 29, 2007, 03:33:54 PM »
I have redone my website with some new gallery software.

If you fancy taking a look then head on over to Ploppys Pics.

You can sign up if you wish, there is a register link top right.
You will then be able to upload your own pictures in to your own album.

There are other things you can do such as make comments on photos, rate photos and send them as e-cards.

Have a look around and let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Paul

Announcements / Forum News
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:48:26 PM »
Hi All,

Just an update on what has been going on behind the scenes recently:
  • Forum software upgraded to latest version, 2.2.2
  • Modifications re-added (Board Panel, Who was online, Statistics, Article system etc.)
  • Entries Added to the Plakias Map. See this post
  • All outstanding registration verifications processed. Nice to see the new members posting as well.
  • Cleanup of the website due to lack of space.
We currently host this website with Invision, the people who wrote the forum software.
They have recently restructured the pricing plans. Whilst this meant we (by we I mean John) payed marginally less for the hosting they slashed our storage space from 500MB to 100MB. This meant we were 400% over  which is why the map was unavailable for a while as I couldn't upload it. As mentioned above I have cleaned up the website and have got it down to 92MB, yep we have a whole 8MB (or 1 picture from my camera) free
On top of this there is a bandwidth cap per month of 5GB. We are currently at 4.9. Tomorrow the site may be inaccessible.

In the interim I will probably upgrade our package to double the space and triple the bandwidth which should see us good for the foreseeable future. Long term there are other options to look at.

Anyway, sorry about the rambling but could we please not add large attachments at the moment. If you can please link to any photos hosted elsewhere. I am happy to host anyones photos on my personal site, just send me a message. I am currently creating a photo gallery for my photos where you will be also able to upload your piccies. There will be other stuff where you can add comments, ratings etc. I will post about it soon.

Thanks,

Paul

Forum and Website discussion / Plakias Map v2
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:25:28 PM »
Have been playing around with Google Maps and have started adding some photos in.

There is now a photos category and clicking on one of the photo icons will open the photo up to view. (The icon should be displaying as a camera but for some reason it isn't at the mo)

I will write up an article to describe how you too can add your own photos into the Plakias map.

Also there is another new category, Beaches, and some more icons added. Many thanks to GreeceMad for these.

Have a play and let me know what you think.

Announcements / Forum Upgraded
« on: April 21, 2007, 07:26:46 PM »
Hiya,

I have upgraded the forum to the latest and greatest.

You will notice a few changes when you post but nothing drastic.

However I did cock things up a bit  (boo - the whistling emoticon has gone)

The Article System somehow lost all its articles, I have a DB backup from before the upgrade so I might manually add them back in.
None of the skins were compatible so they have gone. I will add some more.
The Board Panel at the top has gone.
The Members Online Today bit has gone as well.
Oh and Statistics as well!

Will see what I can do about adding them back.

Have put back in the Map link at the top right. That has been improved as it is now categorized and you can choose to just show what you want , i,e Tavernas.

Stick with me and we should have it back to normal (or better)

Cheers,

Paul

Want to do something different with your pictures from Plakias (or anywhere else)?

  )

Beware though the resulting images can be huge. The original 6000x4000 pixel image is nearly 30MB and can be found here.

Forum and Website discussion / Plakias Map
« on: September 03, 2006, 05:40:12 PM »
You may have seen that I have started working on the Plakias map.

It uses Google Maps and places an overlay of places in Palakias over the top.

You can see the map here.
Plakias Map.

If would be great if we could get more places added to it. I can't remember exactly where everything is so I need your help.

If you feel like helping take a look at this article.

Thanks,

Paul

P.S Is Ali & Daves shop right? Is it a tad further up?

Announcements / Article system online
« on: September 03, 2006, 03:49:16 PM »
The new article/review/faq system is now online.

You can use the Article System link at the top right of the screen or click here.

I have added a few categories and one article for Kastro. I have included a link that should take you to its location on the map. Articles are just like regular posts so you can include links, pictures etc.

I will add more when I get chance. However unlike the old system you should be able to add articles of your own.

I will try and retrieve the data that was posted in the old system. If anyone fancies helping out let me know, i.e I could e-mail you the comments you made and you could repost in the new system.

Have a play and let me know if you have any questions.

Also let me know if you want new categories added.

Cheers,

Paul

Forum and Website discussion / New stuff added
« on: July 17, 2006, 01:13:32 PM »
With the upgrade to the latest version of the forum software we lost the modifications I had previously added. Some are now back again:
  • Board Panel - Useful summary at top of page
  • Statistics - Link top right so you can see how many more million posts Chris has made
  • Members Online Today - Down near the bottom, shows who has logged on today.
A new feature of the forum is the Rich Text Editor. To enable it click your My Controls link at the top and then click the Board Settings link on the left. Change the editor setting at the bottom and then click the Change my account options button.

Also when using the Rich Text Editor you have a spell check option. There is an icon on the toolbar. This does require the ieSpell software to be installed. This is a free download and you will be taken to their website the first time you click the spell check icon.

Cheers,

Paul
