Do you know the name of the new taverna?

You could try Paleochora.

I recall reading on here a couple of years ago someone saying they were giving up on Plakias and going to start going to Paleachora. Anyone know what that's like?
I went to Paleochora 8 years ago so maybe my comments aren't so valid any more.  Anyway, my impression of Paleochora then was that it had a nicer beach and the people were friendlier than in Plakias.  It has a good range of restaurants, though I would avoid the 'Dionisos':  the service is terrible, the food mediocre, and I suffered from food poisoning afterwards.  However, I still prefer Plakias: it has a certain je ne sais quoi which keeps me going back.

Holiday Companies / Re: Chania Airport
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:09:59 PM »
If you are travelling exclusively by public transport, I think Chania is a better choice: unlike in Heraklion, the airport bus takes you directly to Chania town station from where you can catch the bus to Rethymnon.  Chania is also a quieter airport than Heraklion IMHO.  However, I, personally, will continue to use Heraklion simply because I am very familiar with the set-up there, and find there is more variety in using that route.

I've been able to change mine at the car hire place (I can't remember the name) on the seafront next to the road leading to the "Medousa"  without any problems.

The other week on Forces TV they showed the temperatures for Cyprus to be in excess of 30 deg. C which I thought was surprising.  Maybe it was just a blip in the weather.

I've been told that they're making a Scouser version of "Silence of the Lambs".  It will be titled "Shut Up Ewes".

This topic seems to have come to life again.

Another Yorkshire man's wife died, and after the funeral, he went along to the monumental stonemason to order a headstone for the grave.  Apart from his wife's name and dates of birth and death, the man instructed the stonemason to carve the inscription

SHE WERE THINE.

When the mason informed the man that the order had been executed, he went along to the grave, and was horrified to see that the mason had carved the words

SHE WERE THIN.

Furious, he went to the mason, and informed him that he had missed out an E.  The mason was most apologetic, and said that he would correct the error as soon as possible.

In due course, the mason informed the man that he had added the E, and the man went to inspect the headstone.  The inscription now read:

E SHE WERE THIN.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Restaurants in Plakias

I've attached the fourth edition of my list of restaurants in Plakias, mainly to take account of any price increases.

If you are unfortunate enough to need to visit the doctor you should note that he only accepts cash, no credit cards.

We also got around to trying the Cozy Backyard which was very pleasant. Situated almost opposite the pharmacy at the back of KC.
Opens at 5pm until whenever!! Only serves drinks but a real friendly atmosphere & welcome.
On my way to the Xezonis discovered that the Cozy Backyard is right next door to it.  So if all that drinking has whetted your appetite, you can pop in next door for something to eat.

For those of us travelling by coach, the fare from Heraklion to Rethymnon is Euros 8.30 (up from Euros 7.60), and from Rethymnon to Plakias it's Euros 4.90 (up from Euros 4.50).  No doubt the airport bus in Heraklion is now Euros 1.20 (up from Euros 1.10).

Can anyone currently out there tell us if the VAT increase recently passed by the Greek parliament has impacted on restaurant prices and bus fares?
