Forum and Website discussion / How do I update my profile?
« on: August 05, 2004, 02:38:29 PM »
I'm not a computer whizzkid - can you tell me how to update my profile? I've looked in "Help" and I've been into "Mt controls" but when I try and add and update my profile, I get the following message:

"You must complete the form fully before proceeding. Please go back and check the data you entered"

I don't have some of the info to complete the fields - does this mean my last visit to Plakias is doomed to remain in June 2003?!

Thanks

We haven't been in Plakias as late as September, but enjoyed a totally unexpected evening at the end of June. It was obviously a local event, and chairs were set out in the main square (in front of the Kri Kri). There was music and the local children were dressed up in Greek dress, and did some dancing, which was great. They had obviously done a lot of practicing and took the whole thing really seriously.

There were English and German speakers who explained what was happening over the erratic PA system, although we couldn't hear everything. It seemed that people put a personal possession inside a container that had been paraded through the town earlier in the day, and as each possession was drawn out in the evening, a rhyme was read out about that person - and they had to collect their possession and return to their seat - jumping over a fire lit in the middle of the road on the way! Apparently in the days of smaller villages (and I guess, fewer tourists/visitors), these rhymes and songs could go on all night, were full of "in" jokes and caused all sorts of hilarity!

At the end of the evening, drinks of raki were given to everyone, and sweet bread/cake was also passed round. It was a great evening and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It certainly made us feel part of a community that we're very fond of - even though we're not there long enough to get involved. I think it was organised by the local women's group.

Very jealous of all the people who have their holiday still to come - we had a great week in June, but it seems a long time ago now.

PlakChat / Skinaria (Shinaria?) Beach Hotel?
« on: July 08, 2004, 12:57:20 PM »
We've been going to Plakias for about 4 years now and have noticed that there are a few abandoned (mostly unfinished) hotels around (eg the one by Hapimag). The one that really intrigues us is the Skinaria Beach Hotel - it's on the road going down to the beach of the same name - it's the one with the Libyan Star bar/restaurant at the back of the beach.

I can remember when we first drove past it was either open, or only recently closed. Each year it's become more run down, and this year the reception area is being used for storing hay! There's no fencing or security so we went to explore and it's amazing. Most things have been taken - but in what was the dining room we found old menus and even orders that waiters had taken, along with a few postcards of the hotel and salt and pepper pots! The pool was empty and the gardens overgrown, but some of the bedrooms (all broken into now, and some used by goats!) had safes still in the wardrobes, and a few even had blankets left.

Does anyone know what happened - and why it should be like the Marie Celeste?

PlakChat / Far Enders

We like snorkelling at Skinaria (Shinaria?) beach - it's the one with the large Libyan Star bar at the back of the beach. The far end is often naturist, but it depends on who gets there first and whether they take their clothes off! Weekends tend to be busier with families. I wish we'd thought of the Kalypso - we've been there for a nosey, but never tried snorkelling - maybe next year.

We were in Plakias at the end of June - and only saw the donut man on the beach twice, although we did see his car in the village a few times.

We've been back home for a week now after our 4th or 5th trip to Plakias. We've stayed at the Paligremnos 3 times now and always walk into town in the evenings, or to the supermarket- it's a nice walk and not at all strenuous.

Things are a little different if the Meltemi is blowing......!

I can't believe our week went so quickly - and Plakias was as great as always.

Holiday Companies / Caravel
« on: June 11, 2004, 05:49:36 PM »
Hi

We've used Alianthos for car hire for the last few years. We book our own flights and the first time that we visited, the driver met us at the airport and drove us back to Plakias. On our following visits we've always been met at the airport, and have taken the car and driven to Plakias ourselves - without any problems. We've always been able to leave the car at the airport at the end of the holiday too.

We haven't really looked at any other car hire companies, but have always found Alianthos easy and pleasant to use - we book over the internet and pay at their office in Plakias. The cars have always been good too.

Gossip / Dare You bare All

We've been coming to Plakias for 3 years now - and love the freedom to find a quiet beach and bare all. One of the nicest things is the lack of regimented naturism - just a quiet acceptance.

Can't wait to get back there in a few weeks time!
