A beautiful car in a beautiful setting. I would love to undertake a road trip down to Crete and back one day, but the economics compared to flying just don't add up. It wouldn't be in a motorhome either, but something sporty, like my TT maybe. Sue and I are looking forward to our return to Plakias/Stella's in September (been most years since our first visit in the early '90s), but at least we do have another foreign road trip to make before then, having been commissioned by a couple of mags to head across mainland Europe this August in an MX-5 to be provided by the Mazda press office as part of the iconic car's 20th anniversary celebrations. We'll end up at Spa for the Belgian GP on the way back, but I don't think they'd be too happy if I took it all the way down to Crete! Now that would be a trip and a half in a little soft top two seater, not dissimilar to the Triumph.
What a lovely job! Have taken the motorbike to and fro from London through a variety of routes, happy to share with you if you decide one day. My partner was able to get back home this April despite volcanic ash as he was on bike. Sadly  I had to stay on for some time... I did look at the website 'seat 61' to journey by train but like you said the economics didnt  stack up, unless of course you look on it as an extension of your holiday. (I quite like the route through Vienna, then bucharest to Thessaloniki, down to Athens and then the wonderful ANEK.

Memory tells me it's the new Kallikratis Gorge road which we first drove up and down back in 2008. We did likewise last year too, although the roadside infill sections which had materialised since the year before made it far less challenging. Still good fun though and the views are magnificent.
I am attaching a photo but don't know if it will work as I have had to shrink it down to 23k. This is the car that I'd like to tour with. Beautiful Triumph. Note the empty pier in the background. Hope they bring back a couple of fishing boats, it looks so bare without them.

As a motorsport and motoring journalist some of those cars caught my eye - not the normal fare you see along the front in Plakias. I'd love to hire that 911 for our annual return to Stella's in September, but doubt it's either available or, if it is, that I could afford it. I can think of at least one decidedly uphill, narrow and winding road though to the west of Plakias where you could have some real fun in a rear wheel drive 911.

Ah well, no doubt we'll have to settle for a Yaris or something similar again this year unless we win the lottery........
[attachment=735:n1030446...83Silvio.jpg] This is my favourite set of bends to motorbike through above Frangokastello!  It was used for an car advert.

Plakias version of "On Any Sunday"
When the wind blows in from Libya there's always something to do!

For all of you who love Plakias!
I love the place out of season as well and was thrilled to take these videos. The world is great now that I have a iMovie and my Kodak Playsports, more to follow...

Great videos. Classic rally cars in Plakias - what aturn up.

How lovely to see the village in April, just warming up to the new season. It was special. I don't know if you are on facebook but the rally group is on there and is worth a look. There have been so many comments from people enjoying that stage of the rally. Plakias is really Brigadoon as 'I KNOW A GREAT PLACE' . com says.
The interiors of the sea facing exteriors have gone all white and seafaring this year. Corali has some lovely hanging lamps... Despite all I think it's going to be a good season. Going back to basics is the motto, for all of us!

Plakias / Sculpture in Lakkis
« on: September 05, 2007, 05:53:17 PM »
Spent a couple days with motorbikes on the west coast last week. Spotted this in Lakkis on way back to Plakias.
Anyone know history of this or the sculptors name?

Plakias / Beach Blues and Funk Plakias
« on: September 05, 2007, 05:26:01 PM »
Just to say that Plakias had beach grooves last week. Posters announced that it was scheduled but mysteriously ommitted where. (Aha, trying to trick Meltemi Winds from displaying one upmanship, methought)
By Saturday there was a slim and of course unquotable whisper that it would be somewhere behind Manolis Beach Bar.
In the interest solely of investigation I sipped many a beach bar cocktail that afternoon and watched as two large trucks arrived.
By night time the truck was converted to a stage and mellow funkiness was in the air, the more daring and old style Glastonbury clad clan were pounding on the sand in whirling dirvish motion whilst the local expats and natives took appropriate lounge bar safety and stance in the shelter of the beach bar. I heard that it went on till late, and that people watched the sunrise raki in hand smiling. (OK I know that you dont have to have witnessed a funk session for that result)
Hats off to Antonis who I think organised this, (once again unquotable) It satisfied young and old alike. I believe he wants to also put on a cult film, which would have been great, an open air cinema on truck wheels. When he does I am hoping that Meltemi does not get wind of it...!
Some photos for you.

I knew this thread would be a good idea, already i have got two new brews to seek out next year
The black beer sounds very interesting, (an IPA style  mmmm,) as do the Craft Brewery beers
Hello Chris,

I'm surprised you didn't try it in May this year. I know you went to the Souvlakia House as you wrote a review (one of the "few"). Maybe the Medousa's raki was more appealing! The "black" beer isn't black like Guinness but, as I say, brown like a bottled IPA (remember John Courage in the 60s/70s, or are you too young?). The black beer really stands out in Greece where almost all the beers are what we would call lagers at home.

I agree that local beers and foods are best in Greece (and anywhere I guess). e.g taramosalata, Mythos/Amstel.

Although I voted for Mythos I would be pushed to tell the difference between it and Amstel.  Could you distinguish them? Both are brewed in Greece I think.

There used to be other Greek beers like Fix and Henniger that I never see now.

Mike

Rethymnon Blondes are more fun! Just come back from lovely Plakias, the street Souvlaki outside Sifis serves the blond brew. Absolutely delicious.

What about those lovely organic beers served at the Souvlaki bar. ( You have to ask specially for them) Blond or dark. Made somewhere on the road to Rethymnon. Have the same tops that the old Grolsch bottles did years ago.

PlakChat / Ostraco's-What will they be playing this year?
« on: February 10, 2007, 09:06:31 PM »
LOL!!
How about " My first, my last my everything" Barry White.
You should try the reruns of the Greek Christmas shows on the big screen in early Jan...Fab. Same thing over and over again, but what the heck the views are great!

it's really weird seeing a taverna with a christmas tree up
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=5551\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Plakias and other coastal places had boats illuminated in the shop, taverna and house fronts. ie a Christmas dec but not Santa. Any body know why? (Apart from the fishing village aspect)
