Plakias / Beach Blues and Funk Plakias
« on: September 05, 2007, 05:26:01 PM »
Just to say that Plakias had beach grooves last week. Posters announced that it was scheduled but mysteriously ommitted where. (Aha, trying to trick Meltemi Winds from displaying one upmanship, methought)
By Saturday there was a slim and of course unquotable whisper that it would be somewhere behind Manolis Beach Bar.
In the interest solely of investigation I sipped many a beach bar cocktail that afternoon and watched as two large trucks arrived.
By night time the truck was converted to a stage and mellow funkiness was in the air, the more daring and old style Glastonbury clad clan were pounding on the sand in whirling dirvish motion whilst the local expats and natives took appropriate lounge bar safety and stance in the shelter of the beach bar. I heard that it went on till late, and that people watched the sunrise raki in hand smiling. (OK I know that you dont have to have witnessed a funk session for that result)
Hats off to Antonis who I think organised this, (once again unquotable) It satisfied young and old alike. I believe he wants to also put on a cult film, which would have been great, an open air cinema on truck wheels. When he does I am hoping that Meltemi does not get wind of it...!
Some photos for you.

Gossip / Most embarrassing moments in Plakias
« on: February 26, 2006, 11:50:41 AM »
Thought it might be a good topic. "Most embarrasing moments in Plakias"
For those with over five years there it is inevitable that there will have been one or two. Of course some might not be publishable... leave that your discretion.

One of mine is having had a lovely day at the beach, no wind, no power cuts at the room, showered and dressed up, feeling cool set out to promenade.  Bang in the middle of the village feeling utterly great and relaxed the Geese took a liking or disliking to me and I had to flee in the most ungainly manner...
They are scary creatures.
Always had a healthy respect for them since. ie. given them a wide berth..!

Where to stay / Christos above restaurant on pier
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:06:47 AM »
My favourite rooms in town. Apart from the stagger back factor being low the views are incredible, with lots of balcony space to quietly read. Go to the Launderette opposite (Next to Talisman jewellery shop) and you will sometimes find Artemis to rent the rooms from. Sometimes because she is the local artist and when she 'has inspiration' a note to that effect is hung on the laundry door and she is off to her creations. Almost every bar and taverna has her work on the walls.
Anyhow after an overnight flight and a stopover in Athens was raring to go when we finally arrived on New Years Eve this year. Left the room blurry eyed to be confronted by this sight.  The restaurant parrot hanging out on New Years Eve. Very psychedelic. Thought I was hallucinating. LOL...

Where to eat...or not! / Cravings for Chinese meal- Disclaimer
« on: February 09, 2006, 10:39:06 AM »
After eating really healthy Mediterranean diet in Plakias for a week in the new year we really craved something a bit tangy and seasoned.
Drove up to the seafront in Rethymnon and found a Chinese restaurant. It must service the hotels that line the beach.
Eager to tuck in we searched the menu for something with chilli. Found something hotter on the last page.
Disclaimers never come this good at home.
"The store disposes complaint forms for the state of any protestation. All the legal burdens are included in the prices"
Not sure if it disposes or dispenses the forms into the bin. Also the best form of eat up and shut up that Ive ever seen.
Needless to say we ordered a nice bottle of  Chinese wine and ate with gusto.
No Problems.
And we were still in time for the last drinks at our favourite bar at Plakias...

Where to go / Ligres Beach
« on: January 26, 2006, 08:52:55 PM »
I have been visiting Plakias for 20 years. In the last few years Ive been combining staying there and touring different areas on motorbike. Concluded that it is the most beautiful and varied island.
Of course I get a bit twitchy if I stay away from Plakias after a day or so away...Theres no place like home!
For those of you who used to know the old Geronimos rooms in Souda 18 or so years ago I just wanted to share this discovery with you. Ligres Beach. At a village called Kambos after Spili you turn right to Kerames and then Aglianos and down to the beach. There is only one beautiful taverna with rooms and balcony, home cooked meals fresh fish and natural spring water. There is a long beach, deserted the last few times ive been there. You can walk along the beach to the Monastery Preveli and to the old Church of Agios Pavlos. Its run by Giorgos and Olga Zazopoulus and their funky sons and daughters.  It is really like being transported to a quiet island staying with a family and other visitors, watching the sun go down. Very natural. True old fashioned beachcombing. No Ostraco or Gialos though!
Website is www.ligres.gr Its open for visitors from May to October. Ive got the contact details if the website is not running. Apologies if this has appeared as a post before.

Plakias / Epiphany
« on: January 19, 2006, 02:56:39 PM »
[attachment=299:attachment]I think Plakias is a place thats good for all seasons. After two visits in December and January Im beginning to enjoy the feel of the real village.
The feast of the Epiphany was celebrated  with the Blessing of the Waters.
According to Greek Orthodox tradition, Epiphany, the anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, is celebrated each year on January 6, in a ritual according to which men brave the chilly waters to dive for and retrieve a cross after it has been blessed by the priest and tossed into the water.
The man who recovers the cross will have good luck throughout the coming year.

This was Plakias on the 6th Jan 2006

Plakias / End of an era Dismantling of Meltemi
« on: January 17, 2006, 07:29:41 PM »
Here we go... Raise a glass to this moment. The beginning of the dismantling.
These structures will form the new beach activity centre just in front of where Meltemi once stood. Asked quietly where the posters which once adorned the walls were heading. Advised equally quietly there was a waiting list as long as Meltemi had been open for Bob Marley et al...
