Holiday Companies / Smart Holidays
« on: November 07, 2002, 01:01:50 PM »
I've just had a chance to look at the Smart Holidays brochure. The 2003 version is not yet available, but they are taking bookings from the 2002 version.

This is a really different company - they offer many more choices to the customer. Apart from some accommodation in town (including the obligatory Alianthios Hotels), they have several options in the wider Plakias area, including villas etc.

Anyone used them in the past, or  have any further comments?

They have a website - Click here

Announcements / Website search
« on: November 06, 2002, 11:55:41 PM »
Andy and I have been working on getting a search function working on the site.
There's still a litttle 'fine tuning' to do, but there is a new facility live now.

Just go to the front page, and there's an input box. Key in a topic you are interested in, and press the search button. You'll get a page of links on that topic! (If you click on the home button above, you'll be there!

Announcements / Website - F.AQ's updated
« on: November 06, 2002, 01:19:44 PM »
I have updated the notes on phoning Plakias on the website. Go to FAQs page and click on 'Plakias telephone numbers'.

I would appreciate any updates and additions to this list.

Plakias / Phoning Plakias
« on: November 06, 2002, 01:00:40 PM »
I thought I would pass on this information I picked up from the Interkriti website.

Just to make you aware that Greek phone numbers are changing over the next few months!

FROM SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3 2002:
If you want to call landline numbers in Greece, you should replace the current (0) with 2, i.e. if the number is currently 0030 (0) xxx xxxxxx you will need to dial 0030 2 xxx xxxxxx.

Examples:
NOW 0030 8220 12345
NEW 0030 28220 12345

-----

FROM SUNDAY JANUARY 19 2003:
If you want to call mobile numbers in Greece, you should replace the current (0) with 6, i.e. if the number is 0030 (0)xx xxx xxxx you will need to dial 0030 6xx xxx xxxx.

Examples:
NOW 0030 97 123 4567
NEW 0030 697 123 4567

Plase tell your friends, who will need to change ALL their records for landlines and mobiles

More information is available from the OTE website - Click Here

So, as far as I can see, if you wanted to ring Anso Travel from the UK, you would need to dial 0030 28320 31712.

I know people who go to Plakias flight only, and make their own accommodation and transfer arrangements are beginning to make thier bookings now. Please let me know how it goes.

Gossip / Trial
« on: November 05, 2002, 06:26:27 PM »
What do you think about this trial in Greece then?
Personally, I've never seen a Greek airport without strict warnings restricting photography etc. All air force areas are clearly marked, and secure. Isn't it obvious that the authorities are concerned about possible spying?
I don't like to see the innocent locked up - but I suspect they were asking for trouble!

Plakias / Easter
« on: November 04, 2002, 04:12:31 PM »
I see Easter is late again this year in Greece - April 27th. This is just before the season starts - but Olympic are taking bookings from the first week in April on some of their properties.

Easter is the big festival throughout Greece - anyone been - or planning on going?

BTW - there's some great pics from Ken & Kathy taken while they were there for Easter this year. Pop into Ostraco's Bar to find the link!

PlakChat / Sharron and Yannis
« on: November 03, 2002, 10:35:45 PM »
I know so many people drop in to see Sharron and Yannis when they are in town. I spent many a night with them in September. Both are doing well, and enjoying being parents. Little Manolis is doing well too - I think he's going to be a big lad when he grows up, and his dancing skills suggest he's going to be as keen on music as his Dad!
There's a new pic of Manolis on the site News page - don't take any notice of the strange man!
I know there's an Internet connection in Ostraco - but DON'T ask for Sharron's email address - she still hasn't got her head around using it.

Plakias / Cash Dispenser
« on: November 03, 2002, 12:36:37 AM »
Welll after years of waiting, two cash dispensers were installed in town during September. Was that normal Greek timing, or were they planning ahead for the 2003 season?
While I was there, the dispenser was working in the Mayors office - the other one (I can't remember the name of the office where it was installed) was only taking certain cards.
I didn't use either - and I did hear that the Mayor's office one ran out of cash.
Are they OK now?

Holiday Companies / Reps
« on: November 02, 2002, 11:55:53 PM »
I guess I've been spoilt.
I remember Reps like Kelly and Jacinta. They knew the resort, the area, and how to look after their customers.
I can't say I was impressed this year. I saw more of the Olympic rep while she was drunk in the bar (where she rarely bought a drink!) I hear the First Choice rep wasn't much better. Difficult to judge really, as she was also drunk every time I saw her.
Am I just getting old?

Where to stay / Dora
« on: November 02, 2002, 11:51:10 PM »
Featured in the Olympic brochure for the last few years, this is an older style property. Although it is showing it's age in some ways, we have used it for the last few years.
It's location is quiet, at the far end of town, only a few hundred yards from the Ostraco Bar - and the Secret Nest Taverna (great for fish!).
The main bonus for us is Dora, who looks after the property herself. It is always spotless, linen is clean, and she even makes sure there is soap, washing up liquid etc. in every room.
And don't be surprised if a bottle of Raki turns up on the dressing table!

Plakias / Disabilities
« on: November 02, 2002, 10:20:39 PM »
A message on the old board asked about facilities in the resort for disabled travellers. Any information you can add here about special facilities would be most welcome.

Well I won't rest 'till I get you there Andy!
And hey - let's make it public - thanks for all the help with setting up this new forum. Couldn't have done it without you mate!

Gossip / Euro
« on: November 02, 2002, 10:05:51 PM »
This year was my first experiences with the Euro, I soon got used to it - and I think it's time the UK joined in. It also seemed to me that it didn't affect prices in the shops much, as everyone feared. What do you think?

Announcements / New board
« on: November 02, 2002, 07:59:37 PM »
I've had a message board on the site for a while now, and it's proved popular. However, in using various free providers, I have been let down several times.
I have now moved the site to InVision, a professional hosting service. This has also enabled me to use a different type of board.
I hope you will approve! The discussion is more structured, and other features like a calender and member to member messages make this so much better.
Please take some time to find your way around, and help to contribute to the Plakias community.
You will need to register to use the full facilities of the board - and to enable cookies in your browser, if you haven't done so already. If you don't like cookies, you can set the browser to accept from this site only.
If you need further information about Cookies, Andy has added it to the Problems Forum, here.
Please come in and look around - and start posting!

« on: November 02, 2002, 07:45:08 PM »
The 2003 brochures are starting to appear. Let us know about your bookings, and what new options you discover for 2003.
I have updated the info on the site as far as possible, but your postings will help to keep it correct.
