Plakias / Help needed
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:16:05 AM »
Wow what a place, just like the old days.Bet their phone is melting.
You would have to be mad not to go for it.
How many replies they had Katerina?
I think i have a photo of that place taken in 1990,will see if its the same place.Did the owner used to drive a vw combi back then and go diving?

Hi Dimitri
Believe it or not they haven't had any replies!
You know the place - the man you remember was sadly lost at sea and it is now run by his brother and his Aussie/Greek wife. I don't think much has changed, they know that all some people want is simplicity, peace and good food.
I'd love to see a photo of it in 1990 if you can find it

Plakias / Help needed
« on: May 16, 2008, 05:17:45 PM »
On behalf of friends who need someone to help them run a small family taverna with 4 rent rooms, I thought someone might be interested in being paid to spend the summer in an idyllic location!
The taverna is literally next to the water so don't apply if the sound of the sea bothers you!
It is on the south coast between Agia Galini and Plakias. Immediate start, until October.
Good conditions, reasonable pay, friendly Cretan/Australian family.
Live in position, all food and accommodation provided
To contact and find out more about the location go to http://www.agiafotini.net

Where to eat...or not! / Any ideas for where to eat in Spili?
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:13:49 PM »
In my opinion the best food is definitely Panorama, just the other side of Spili. It's walking distance from the fountains; make sure you try the owner's mother's dolmadakia.
As you go into Spili the wonderful restaurant on the left covered in flowers is Maria Costas, large portions, and Costas does an excellent grill.
I also tried the one in the middle of town with a terrace overlooking the carpark - the food was poor and the service dire and we were ripped off, so wouldn't recommend that!

PlakChat / Flowers of Crete
« on: July 27, 2007, 11:53:31 AM »
One of the things I have always loved about Crete in general and the south coast in particular is the amazing displays of flowers, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. In recent years though, intensive farming and building development have started to take their toll, with many meadows being ploughed up and the pesky oxalis taking over at the expense of the indigenous species.
A charity has been set up to try to get some protection for the areas that remain, and the woman that runs it has been asked to speak at an international conference in Romania which will hopefully raise awareness of the unique nature of the island. Only problem is - she needs funds. If anybody wants to contribute hard cash towards this, it can be done through those wonderful people at the Hellenic Bookshop: [a href=\'index.php?act=findpost&pid=0\']http://www.hellenicbooks.com/julia.htm[/a]
You have to go through the purchasing procedure and give your 'delivery' address, and then say how much you would like to donate in the Additional Information box - complicated I know, but it is for a very worth while cause
BTW I have nothing to do with the organisation, and don't know Julia personally, but anyone who wants to find out more can check out her wonderful website [a href=\'index.php?act=findpost&pid=0\']http://www.flowersofcrete.info/[/a]

PlakChat / Coming soon

When you get to Matala make sure to go to the taverna perched on the top of the rocks to the east of the bay. It is run by wonderful people, they always seem to have something 'etoimo' that the whole family eats and is absolutely delicious. And as if that weren't enough they have a terrace overlooking the sea that gives you the most fantastic view of the sunset
You lucky, lucky thing

Plakias / Weather - is it windy
« on: July 13, 2006, 02:27:59 PM »
Accuweather
http://wwwa.accuweather.com/world-forecast...on&metric=1
have a 10 day forecast for Rethymnon which is even closer, but they don't give any indication of wind. And in my experience the weather can vary drastically even over such a short distance.
I've heard that it has been windier than usual this year, perhaps the result of long term climate change

Plakias / Books of Crete

Both fabulous books, you could also try Falling For Icarus by Rory Maclean and of course Kazantzakis' Zorba. For much lighter reading there's The Island by Victoria Hislop.
Unfortunately all of them are set in the north, and I've never found anything specifically about the south, not in English anyway!

Plakias / FIRE
« on: July 07, 2006, 02:14:56 PM »
This is dreadful news for those who live in Plakias and love it.
It's obviously serious since it has made the national news in a country where summer fires are almost routine:

I can't believe anyone would want to do such a thing, it will take years for the land to recover
Good luck to everyone there trying to put the blaze out

Gossip / Timbaki container terminal
« on: January 23, 2006, 02:06:32 PM »
Thank you Shinaria, it is indeed a happy day now.
I had thought that it would be a huge investment to develop Timbaki, with the roads what they are it seemed unlikely, Heraklion would be better if it had to be Crete.
The idea of a container terminal made even the golf course proposal seem attractive!
As a South Coast lover, I've been 'lurking' for a while but had to join to post my question. That's a great site, thanks for the link, although it is a struggle translating it, my Greek is far from fluent! Still, it's all good practise.

Gossip / Timbaki container terminal
« on: January 23, 2006, 11:55:15 AM »
Thanks for that Shinaria, that has made my day. All my favourite beaches are within oil spill distance of Timbaki, and while I understand the local's enthusiasm for the project I was dreading the effect it would have in the long term.
I always check ekathemerini but haven't found To Byma online. Is htere a link or do you get the paper sent to you?
Thanks again
Katerina
