Dreaded mobiles
« on: May 11, 2003, 01:53:31 PM »
you are all going to hate me for this...............
can i get a good signal on my mobile???
this is my first complete week off in 4 years because of a new business i started. i am actually very excited about visiting plakias after reading all the posts here, but i am still worried about leaving my business. knowing that i'm still contactable will take away some of the worry. i know this is sad but if i know i can't speak to the office i'm just going to spend the whole week worrying.

thanks in advance...

(i promise i won't use my mobile on the beach, in bars, in restuarants, in fact in any public place - honest)

No problem - our O2 mobile works fine everywhere in Plakias.  We sometimes use it to signal to our friends who stay in an apartment the other side of town that we are setting out to the taverna for the evening meal.  Whoever leaves first calls the other's number and hangs up after 3 rings.  The receiving party is of course honour bound not to answer the phone unless it rings more than 4 times!

Have fun

Allan

Hiya,
I'm on O2 as well - no problems there.
Some of the group I travel out with use Orange, and others Vodofone, and they too are OK.
You won't have any trouble keeping in touch - but after a few day, will you want to?  I never do!

For those like me who travel a lot away from Plakias and need to keep in touch (very elderly sets of parents) the mobile phone reception in virtually the whole of Crete is superb. I use orange but I think all UK networks will have identicla roaming facilities.

I'm in Essex UK and got as text from Karen in Plakias yesterday -  so all would seem well.

That's cool Rob - just don't tell the people at work - I've told them all it's a black-spot

Just beware of the cost though.... I'm on Vodafone and it cost me 39p to send a text (although nothing to receive one).  I made no calls myself but Rob used up all my remaining £5 credit when he rang me on the first Sturday night for a call which lasted 3 minutes at most.  It might have been costing him £2 a minute but it also cost me to receive the call!  It's also a bit hit and miss as to whether the message gets sent instantly and sending by replying too didn't seem to work unless I took the 44 off the beginning of the number and replaced the 0.

By the way, Rob 's on Virgin and his phone didn't work although I read on the Virgin site that you can use your phone abroad if you are on their monthly direct debit service although not, it seems, on the Pay as you Go!
