We've been before this time of year and agree with you that it's beautiful.

We've been many times, Infact we were only there in April and return for three weeks May 17th.
Taxis are easy.
Just get in one at the rank, go to where ever it is you want to, take a mobile and a card from the taxi driver just incase but we've never had to use our own phones as there's always a taverna that will call one for you.
It's usual to be a customer so order a drink each and relax.
Never had a problem.
We're renting a car for the whole three weeks as there's no transfer this year.
21 days hire for a small car £220.
About the same price of a return taxi from the airport.
Good luck and have a lovely holiday

Thanks voloudakis,
At the moment a car for 7 days is only £62 from the airport so I was thinking along the same lines..
When are you travelling?

Plakias / Recommendations for car hire whilst in Plakias
« on: April 26, 2016, 04:27:20 PM »
Hi everyone,
We are taking a cheeky week in Plakias as we missed our spring break there this year.
Usually we rent a car for the airport but this time we're coming through Olympic so transfer is already paid for.
Could anybody on here recommend a good car hire firm in the village please.

Thanks in advance and if you're in Plakias May 24th for a week,we may see you there!

Have a great Summer

I enjoyed reading your holiday diary,we are flying out October 19th & driving around the island as we have the past six autumns.
Plakias first stop for as many nights as the weather is good, which usually is every day.
A bit of a gamble for most which is why it's so peaceful.
The tavernas that we enjoy are still open into November but of course it gets dark much earlier..
I think we have turned our clocks back there every year..
We also go out March April, which is a complete contrast ie the approaching season with every business getting a new lick of paint & the umbrellas being dug into the beach for the season..an air of optimism for the coming 7Months or so.

Autumn sees the big close down and we watch the umbrellas being dug up & taken into storage for winter.
There is never a need to book a table of course and also a smaller percentage of British visitors.

It was interesting reading some views on the site of the fire, which we only just missed earlier In The year..I was sympathetic but also held the view that it would be all the better for it...those horrible dated sheds have made way for something new & more pleasing to the eye....as for the touting..thank god that's stopped..I hate it..we look forward to seeing it.

I'll try to put a little diary together of our trip as it may be of some interest..
In Summer we go to other Greek destinations,Paxos last July, which was amazing but always return to Plakias for our early & late travels.

« on: March 19, 2015, 09:25:12 AM »
Last year was beautiful we spent all day outdoors, some of it on the beach with temperatures of 20-24 degs.
Mornings & evenings needed an extra layer to be fair.
We were eating for two nights by a fire, lit for us in the Taverna near where we stayed at Frangocostello.
We'll let you know how it goes..
Good luck for May

Plakias / Plakias at Easter 2015
« on: March 18, 2015, 09:47:08 AM »
We're heading off to Crete at the end of March,as we did last year..
This time we'll have Easter out there & have 5 nights in Plakias over that weekend..
Last year the weather was great so hopefully it will be the same this time around..
We will also stay in Rethymno for a couple of nights when we arrive to see the sights..
All very reasonable helped by the time of year & the currency exchange rate..car hire from the airport is just under £8 per day for a small car..
We can't wait..
Hope it's the beginning of another great season for all of us..
Yammas!

Hello Cecille,
It would certainly be nice to meet up for a drink or two..I'll try to contact you whilst we're in Plakias.
We'll look forward to it..

Hi Richard,
In answer to your question ref the weather..
I'm sure there are many folks who belong to the forum who live there but for us the weather was amazing.
Now looking at the averages we were pretty lucky.
We didn't get any rain & the temperature was maybe 22 degs on the beach but obviously it gets dark early so can get a little nippy.
We were in Shorts & tee shirts every day from memory.

The clarity of the atmosphere is very clear..the sun, although not hot is very strong...Annie who has olive skin burnt in 4 hours, which doesn't happen in July in Greece..
Some of the locals warned us of this but only after we'd done it lol.

The funny thing about going so early is the surprise on people's faces when they see two pale English people walking down the road!.
It is a time I always love in Greece...the pre season preparations..the optimism & energy..
I lived a couple of seasons on the mainland, always getting out there March time ready for the Easter celebrations...sadly we missed this earlier in the year because of work commitments..

Anyway...with easy jet & cheap car hire all available at the press of a button,we will be travelling around the Island for some seasons to come..
Always spending a good few days I Plakias, which is almost a second home!

I had an absyss whilst over in March & was told about the village dentist..
A charming young Lady..
I was dealt with straight away...given anti biotics (which were alcohol friendly) & sent on my way.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back if I'm unlucky enough to suffer again whilst away..

I did try the beer..red wine & Raki medicine first..which sadly didn't work!

Have a great time..we're out Oct 19th

PlakChat / We're back (again) October 2014
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:39:03 AM »
Hi everyone,
I have enjoyed reading the Forum posts,so thought I'd say hi.
My partner (Annie) & I fell in love with Plakias back in October 2010 & have been back every October since.
We have always stayed at Costas Chrysoulas & came with olympic..good old Les!

We decided to come out in late March this year,to enjoy Crete before the season started..
I hired very cheap flights & a car online from Heraklion airport & 2 nights at hotel Sofia in Plakias for starters.

It was one of the best holidays we've ever had..
The Hotel opened just for us on the first night..we started the season for them & as the only guests had the choice of Room & views.
On the second morning we discovered that there were 2 other German couples also,so we had to share the breakfast!..lol

Gio Ma had just opened which was great for us but not a lot else was tbh.
Walking through the town, everyone was frantically painting their tavernas or businesses.
There were a few Germans but I'm not sure we met any English people, not that it mattered.

We went up to 'on the rocks' to find Nikos painting the tin roof of the bar terrace white..
He was hoping  this would reflect the heat better then the black paint which had always been the case.
He stopped for a beer of course & opened that evening..

The spring flowers were amazing & had there been snow we would have enjoyed seeing it on the mountains...sadly it didn't snow last Winter..

Driving was a pleasure..we went from Plakias to Frangocostello, which is about an hour west & saw only 4 cars coming the other way!.

We stayed in Plakias for 4 nights in all, then 2 nights in a mill & one in Chania.

We're flying out to Chania October 19th & then driving down to stay at 'on the rocks' for five nights before driving west to explore.

If anyone reading this is out at the same time,it would be nice to share a beer & a few stories..or a story & a few beers of course!.

Trevor & Annie.
