Title: a sandy beach ?
Post by: jetrotte on June 06, 2013, 12:38:47 PM
I think the beach is not what it was even as a sandy beach. Now there are rocks and boulders far out in the water. I have noticed that all the sand blowing up on the road and on the other side.

Sad that Fredie family has left Plakias :-(

The beach is always moving. Daily changes due to wind and tide can be quite subtle - but after a storm you might well see dramatic differences. Vast quantities of sand will sometimes move from one end of the bay to the other - then slowly it makes its way back!

I agree with you. There were many more stones/boulders in the first few metres into the sea and getting past them was quite tricky. This is further evidence for me that the far end isn't the best part of the beach (OK, let's not start that one again!!!).

For those interested in umbrellas at the far end, by the time I left on May 14th I counted about 40 which seemed to be all Tolly had. Most were in the rows but a few were situated around the trees at the cliff end. Some days in the last week nearly all were taken.

Just back from three weeks in Plakias - our first time. Because there were so many rocks at the 'far end' my wife and I went looking for something better. At both Micro Amoudi and Shinaria beach I could strip off and are so much nicer than Plakias. And so friendly. Sorry everyone but Plakias beach gets the thumbs down from both me and my wife. But thumbs up to Plakias itself (apart from the motor bikes!) and Crete. We will definitely come again.

We found a lovely sandy beach here Google maps 35.355581,24.282588
that are either married or gay people, but everyone is very nice to talk to.
Then the bad shingle beach of Plakias care for themselves :-)

That's Georgiopoulos isn't it. Quite a way away particularly if no hire car.
