Holiday Companies / Olympic (again)
« on: December 30, 2016, 05:34:12 AM »
Has anyone else looked at Olympics web page since Christmas? The majority of holidays to Plakias and some other resorts (I haven't looked at everything obviously) are showing as Transfers not included. If you start the booking process it gives you the option to tag on taxi transfers toward the end along with your luggage extras.
The current cost now works out about £300 pound more for our next summer holiday than we booked it at.

There are going to be some out of work Coach drivers and very busy Taxi drivers by the looks of it. (I ought to get my gray Mercedes ordered today)

Is it just the angle, or is Gio-Ma and Christos on fire in this webcam shot?

Plakias / Alterations to Plakias front
« on: May 10, 2015, 12:42:32 PM »
I can't help feeling that the No Parking on the front, and now the fire, has something to do with the new bridge and alterations to the road that is due to happen shortly.
For those unaware, basically the road is to be altered to run along the shore from where the Taxi rank is, over a new bridge on the front edge of the stream, and carry on along the shore to the harbour joining up to the old road just before Gio Ma. All the Businesses that had buildings on the front were going to have to demolish them and re-build them on top of the old road joining on to the main building (kitchen area). From what I understood though, it wasn't due to happen for another year or so, around the same time the back road, and the road up past Stella's was widened.

Where to go / Samaria Gorge
« on: April 16, 2015, 10:20:44 AM »
Does anyone know how much the Samaria Gorge trip was last year?
Also whether it's best to book through Les or the local Travel Agents?
And any other useful tips or information regarding walking the Gorge.

Many thanks

PlakChat / Inflation in Plakias
« on: July 22, 2014, 09:06:08 AM »
We estimate that from the prices we (half) remember from last year, and the extra amount we spent this year that things are generally about 15-20% more expensive than last year. Plakias prices which all regulars will know, have been quite low compared with the rest of Crete, and the majority of the less touristy Islands. We had been paying less for most things than we did approx. 10 - 12 years ago on Paros and Skopelos, but it looks like those days are over.
We haven't noticed this much difference in a year since the days of the Dracma.
Anyone been elsewhere in Greece this year and also to Plakias who could shed light on the difference in prices?

Where to eat...or not! / Sofia Restaurant - Avoid
« on: July 17, 2014, 04:15:57 PM »
We went to the Sofia on 30th June to celebrate a significant anniversary (30th), We had seen the Rib-eye Steak advertised on the board outside which was suitable for 2 people, and the female thrower-in assured us there was plenty and we could have it cooked as we liked it, and a choice of potatoes and veg./salad.
Inside we ordered from the waiter and stated that we wanted it well done with no blood running, and the waiter said it was better done medium, we restated no blood, the juice must be running clear. Needless to say it was served still mooing, and with the wrong veg./salad (the chips were correct) we ate a small amount of the meat from the outer edge before I managed to attract the waiters attention and after he poked at it (no joke) he stated it was cooked OK, I repeated that I asked for it without blood, at which time he wandered off across the road with it to the kitchen, so we thought he was going to get it cooked for another 10 minutes, but no, he came straight back with it and said that the chief said it was cooked OK, and the red was the sauce (there was a dribble of some balsamic dressing on the side of the plate) not blood.
Needless to say after all this we asked for the bill and walked out after the Malaka took €34 off me for the privilege of eating less than a quarter of the meal and a glass of wine each.

Be warned, the customer has no chance of been right at this joint

Gossip / i-Greeks
« on: July 15, 2014, 05:15:23 AM »
I suppose it seemed reasonable to let the ancient Greeks have the wheel, but then some idiot let them have the infernal combustion injun,
What I want to know is, which sadomasochist also allowed them to have the Mobile phone?

PlakChat / Drones Eye View
« on: June 19, 2014, 10:23:55 AM »
Some of you may have missed this item in a recent Daily Snail, a Website has put together loads of films taken all over the world with unmanned drones.

The link to the website is:   http://travelbydrone.com

If you drag the map across to Crete and zoom in, there is a link to a film showing Plakias and the surrounding area from a different perspective

Where to stay / Emilia Apartments
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:33:20 PM »
Has anyone any reports about the Emilia, we hadn't really noticed it before this year as it is nicely tucked away in an Olive grove behind the Alianthos. I have found a web site for it and it looks reasonable and this years prices aren't bad. It could be a possible if we go independent next year.

Holiday Companies / Olympic 2013 Holidays
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:21:25 PM »
It's not looking good for next year, flights from Humberside to Crete have gone and the only rooms showing available from Manchester, East Midlands, Leeds, Stansted & Gatwick are Dora's & Labyrinth.
Looking like it will have to be independent unless we go elsewhere

I love the the "lost in translation" mistakes on menus etc.
here's one from outside the Atlantis Taverna earlier this year, I wonder if you can get a packet mix in this country.
Anyone got others?

Holiday Companies / 2011 price hike
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:38:36 PM »
Hi
Anyone else noticed that over the the last weekend both Olympic and Thomas Cook have slapped a £30 per head "price adjustment" on this summers bookings. I can't find anywhere on their websites to explain what its about, I have emailed Olympic and will post their reply if I get one.

All the best
