Plakias / "Village Store" closes ....
« on: January 01, 2009, 03:51:14 AM »
I know I'm late coming in on thise but hearing the village store is gone is a complete shock to me.  I popped in there nearly every day from mid May till mid July this year and for a week or 2 for the previous 4 years just because it felt like a little bit of england out in greece and now it's gone.

Completely shocked, completely. That's all I can say.

I hope to see Dave & Ali in Joe's next year for a few

Hate to be finicky but the Youth Hostel and Lending Library locations are incorrect on the map.

If instead of going straight on at the cross roads up where it is currently located on the map you take the right and go over the river and keep left on that road and there is a little dirt track leading up to 3 buildings, this is the Youth Hostel and the Lending Library is the building a little bit further up the road from the hostel on the left.

Holiday Companies / Excel Airways

Hi Everyone

We have booked with excel airways for the first time. I had heard bad things about them from a couple of people but just thought you can have a bad experience with any airline, but having just been reading some reviews on them i'm now now worried! I would welcome any comments good or bad from any one who has flown to Crete with them. Over the years as we do flight only we have flown with pretty much every one & generally all have been ok with the exception of a British Midland flight years ago & this June Thomsonfly, was first time with them and not impressed worst experience yet, hence now wondering if Excel will be worse?

Look forward to your comments

Rowena & Carl

Depends what you're expecting from the flight really, I've flown with them to Crete twice now and I've no complaints.  It's pretty basic, meal isn't much to write home about but as in do they get you there in one piece then yes.  Also both times I've flown with them we've got in a few minutes early at both ends.

I'm probably going to be hated for this but what I always miss when I'm in Plakias is a good rock music club.  But then again could the place support another club, we saw what happened to Meltemi

I usually fly with xl and stop at the hostel, can usually get a good deal with xl if your flexible on when you want to go (i just got a return for £150) and costs the same for 1 or 2 weeks and the hostel is €8 a night (£35ish for a week).  Oh yeah and the current discount code for xl is MOD to get £10 off.  Just got to worry about transfer then (around €80 in taxi or about €10 on the bus)

sounds good Chris...can anyone use the bar at the hostel??........blue is the colour.........closely followed by blue/green.

Tolon is in the Pelopponese.

Afraid not no because it all goes on your tab which you pay off when you leave the hostel.  Of course if you talk to someone at the hostel there's a good chance you could put it on their tab

Might visit Tolon at some point but not this time as i'm only there for a week.  Keep on saying i'll have to go see a few other places while i'm there but never get around to it.  Might go for 3 weeks next year that'll give me plenty of time to go.

Hostel's great, loads of really friendly ppl from all over the world that some how manage to find it, was full for part of the time we were there.  During the day tends to be more chilled out with ppl just hanging around the hostel chatting or sun bathing or heading down to the beach, it's basic but its really a case of what more do you want really.

Not sure about cocktails but the hostel has big mythos for just over €1 and Joe's does a white russian for €3 or an Ouzo for €2.

Never heard of Tolon, where is it?

Fav colour, used to say red but I'm changing my mind to green these days..

Where to go / Waterfalls
« on: July 24, 2006, 02:15:23 PM »
I know where this picture was taken.  The walk is more of a hike though going upstream from the Old Mill, it's about 3 miles of wading through water and climbing up waterfalls and is tough going and advise you do it in a group so can help each other out.  Well worth doing though as when you get to the end you get amazing views across Plakias bay and you're not too far from Myrthios for a drink which you'll need

Hey Laura, just do what these guys say hang around Nufaro (otherwise known as Joe's, tell Joe Chris sent you) at night but don't get there before midnight otherwise it's dead.  I just got back from Plakias a week ago stopping at the hostel and pretty much all the younger ones (and some of the older ones) end up there at night.  Shame your going in August as I'm not due to go back till October.  Sure you'll have a great time tho and Damnoni beach is about 1/2 an hour walk from Plakias and its a nice walk as long as its not too hot.

thanks guys!.....I can't wait to go now......I'm on the bikini diet....well kind of.....disrergading the icecreams!.......I'm not too concerned if most people are older than me....I see that as a good sign, older people have better taste in where they go.....most people my age are probably in magalluf in some nice high rise apartment block, eating fish n chips on an overcrowded beach!....this is not my cup of tea.....which incidentally is the only English thing I cannot do without on holiday...but am still yet to kind anywhere that makes a good one!

BTW.....I'm liking the sound of the aussie barmen.....lets hope they venture out on to the beach!
