Plakias / Re: Oct 2020 - a few general impressions
« on: October 13, 2020, 01:57:57 PM »
Nobody knows what the new hotel will bring, they were still building when i was there in march just before the lockdown. But they did not open this year due to the covid.
The fact that there were less british people is normal due to the cancelation of flights and package deals.
It was quiet in august but they managed pretty well in my opinion.

Last week they made an asphalt road from Preveli to the venitian bridge. No more gravel road.
Means that there is one less authentic road. last 2 years there was more and more traffic on the road.

Plakias / Re: Plakias Far end, what's there now (summer 2020)?
« on: August 26, 2020, 10:19:02 AM »
We just got back from Crete. Spend quite a few days in Plakias over the last 3 weeks.
Far end was quite bussy in the last week after 15 august. Fewer umbrellas and chairs then other years, only saw it full on monday the 16th, even the donut man was out of stock.
Other days there were still chairs available.
Apostolis said it was not as bad as he tought it was. he hoped that the season would last a little longer this year.

Just got back, wonderful time in Crete, micro ammoudi was to crowded with Greek family's, mostly dressed.
Far end was crowded but wonderful. chair guy sprayed the beach in the morning when there was wind so the sand did not blow away.
Donutman still doing his rounds.
Counting down now, back on october 5th.

Souda beach is allowed, except in august when the Greeks are on holiday. The guy that rents the chairs told us 2 years ago.
they are probbably already warning before the Greek family's are comming.
We seen the same in the last 2 years. Greeks claiming "their" beaches.
We went to far end and Ammoudaki in august and keep Souda beach for before and after season.
You also see more clothed people on Ammoudaki in august, mostly Greek.

Just returned from a great 10 days in Crete.
Plakias was very busy until the 19th, farend very crowded, still 6€ for 2 sunbeds and umbrella. No sign off the donutman however.
Great temps and also the water was still very nice for snorkeling.
Ammoudaki was very busy, 7€ for 2 chairs and umbrella. Beach bar still open.
Most of the restaurants and chops are closing next weekend for the winter.
Now 5 months to wait for the return at easter holiday 2019.

Yesterday rain and misserable weather. Today sun and summer temps. Lovely beach weather. Great calm sea.
It seems like there are more People than in august. Yesterday in Agia Galini and Matala it was very busy, also more than in august.

Just got back from 2 and a half weeks in Crete, did a few trips to Plakias, Ammoudaki and Souda. Far end beach was quite full, but it wasn't as crowded as other years. Donut man mad his daily passes, Ammoudaki was very crowded, but due to the Greeks on holiday in August, mor then half of the people wear clothing. Saudo beach was even fully dressed, far end no problems.
Restaurants never full so i don't think that there was as much people as other years.
Now back to counting down, returning in octobre.

For the alternative beaches, they are not far away, If you like walking it can be done by foot, or rent a car for a few days, make a daytrip to Agia Galini or to Rethymnon if You like some more shopping. Anso travel in Plakias rents bike if You like that more thans a car.
Have fun there and enjoy your 18 days. We were in Plakias in april With Easter and had almost no wind on the beach.

Few umbrella's are allready in place and there are enough chairs on the beach. mostly still stacked.

Just got back from 2 weeks in Crete, We mage quite a few trips to Plakias because the weather was better in the south, especially the seawater temp.
Nice to see the difference with the first week of march when i was there.
Most restaurants are open, Tasomanolis not yet but working hard to get ready.
The restaurants between the parking and the harbourwal are all open.
The stores are open or working to open in the next days.
The beaches are cleaned from all the seaweed and the new pedestrian bridge looks nice. the roadworks are mostly finished.
Chairs and a few umbrella's are allready in place at the far end. spend a few days on the beach and every day there are more people at the beach.
Now back to work and 108 days to the return.
